Hiroshima Juniors final Coffee Club! (and announcement of Scavenger Hunt winner) -March 29th

Today we had our final Coffee Club for our Hiroshima Juniors group! We had our usual favourites – delicious coffees and TimTams, as well as a very fun game of Uno. We all chatted about what everyone did yesterday evening and took the time to reflect on their two-week trip so far. Everyone agreed that they would like more time here at Lexis Byron Bay as they are enjoying it so much!

We also announced the winner of our recent Scavenger Hunt photography challenge – it was the amazing group Yoga shot, taken by Kanon. Well done Kanon! 😀 See her winning shot below and her accepting her prize – TimTams! 😀

Aussie Food Tasting! February 8th

Last Friday, we kicked off the weekend here at Lexis with some Aussie Food Tasting! We had a separate tasting for both our morning and evening students, at 11.30am in the student lounge and 2pm in room 2, meaning LOTS of food for everyone! 🙂

We had a range of delicious (and some not so delicious…!) foods to try:

  • Fairy Bread (white bread with margarine/butter and sprinkles)
  • Musk Sticks (pink semi-soft sweet stick with floral, musk flavours)
  • Allen’s Red Frogs (chewy jelly treats)
  • Macadamia Nuts (found in both New South Wales & Queensland)
  • Anzac Biscuits (oat biscuits)
  • Vegemite (yeast extract spread, popular with toast!)
  • Mini meat pies (pastry pies filled with meat, gravy, onion, mushrooms & cheese)
  • Sausage Roll (savoury pastry snack & popular party food)
  • Caramello Koala (chocolate bar filled with caramel)
  • Tim Tams (I think we all know what these are!! 😀 )
  • Lamingtons (a small sponge cake square coated in chocolate and coconut)

Coffee Club! January 29th

Last week, we had our last coffee club for the month of January! We gathered as usual outside the student lounge, sitting  under shade from the hot sun. We all sipped coffees/teas and chatted about life in Byron. For some of the group, it was their final week (we will miss you guys!) so we chatted about their highlights of studying in Lexis and living in Byron Bay. (There were many! 🙂 )

We also got into a serious game of Jenga! This one is extra fun for our Lexis students as each block has an English question attached to it – perfect for getting to know everyone better 🙂

Coffee Club happens outside the student lounge every Monday at 11.30am AND every Tuesday at 2pm. Come and join us to chat with new friends and of course, for coffee and Tim Tams! 🙂

Morning Coffee Club! 4 December

This morning, we had our first coffee club of not only a new month, but a new season! Summer is finally here! 🙂 It’s a bit cloudy here in Byron today but still beautifully warm, with a soft breeze blowing to keep us cool while we sipped our coffees and played………Jenga!

It was Tassia’s first time to play Jenga so she was super excited! 🙂

Summer is definitely on it’s way here in Byron Bay! It was a beautifully warm day so we enjoyed today’s Coffee Club in the sunshine <3

The Tim Tams had to be eaten very quickly as they were melting in the heat, but luckily the students were happy to help out!

We were all amazed that Sacha has been in Australia one month and this is the first time he’s had Tim Tams?! He now loves them almost as much as the other students and said he’ll be coming back to Coffee Club again next week 🙂

We had lots of fun playing Jenga with questions, until Sacha knocked the tower over and had to do 10 push ups!

Today at Coffee Club we played Jenga with questions!

Each block has a question for the player to answer before placing it back on top of the tower. It’s a great way of learning new and interesting things about eachother!

It was a rainy day here in Byron, making Coffee Club the perfect activity!

We all warmed up with some coffees accompanied with Tim Tams.

It was great to see lots of our new students there getting to know eachother!

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, some of our students were making a cake with the lovely Mary to celebrate her birthday!

Aussie Food Tasting! 3 August

Today’s activity was Aussie Food Tasting!

The students were able to try Aussie favourites: Vegemite, Lamingtons, Tim Tams, Macadamia nuts, Allens red frogs, Musk sticks, Caramello koalas, Anzac biscuits and Fairy bread!

Nobody was a fan of Vegemite! It’s always great to see people’s reactions when they try it for the first time!!

The clear favourite was Tim Tams, which all the students were already very familiar with!

There were some the students hadn’t heard of, like musk sticks, but they were happy to give everything a try!

To accompany their snacks we had a selection of Kirks soft drinks (Creaming soda, Lemon and Pasito flavours) and Milo (chocolate and malt powder mixed with milk), both popular here in Australia!

Yesterday at Coffee Club we played Heads Up!

Heads Up is a great app you can download on your phone, where you have to guess the word showing on the screen (which you hold up to your forehead) from clues being given to you!

There’s lots of different categories, including accents, animals, act it out (where you can’t speak!) and just for kids (which was our favourite)!

We had lots of fun working as a team to describe and act out the words to eachother!

It’s so lovely to be back at Lexis Byron after a little trip back to the UK! I feel extremely lucky to have a job that I can look forward to coming back to, this is all thanks to the wonderful staff and students I get to spend my days with 🙂

Today at Coffee Club Judit, one of our Spanish students, shared two games with us.

I won’t go into details as it involves everyone having to work something out, and we can hopefully play it again one day with some new students! Let’s just say lots of fun was had, especially when most of the group had figured out the pattern!!

We played the German version as it was Dano who first explained the game!

Today we had a festive themed Coffee Club!

As well as the students favourite Australian sweet, Tim Tams, we also had some delicious mince pies with our coffees!

We played a Christmas themed game of ‘Who/What Am I?!

We each had a Christmas object or person stuck to our head and took it in turns to each ask a question about who/what we were that could only be answered with a yes or no!

Some were quite quick to guess but others took quite a lot of questions and clues!

It was a really fun and festive afternoon; thank you to all the students who shared it with me!

It was great to have lots of our new students come along for Coffee Club today!

For a lot of them it was the first time they tried the popular Australian chocolate treat Tim Tams; the feedback was of course positive!

We played Uno and then Jenga with questions! This is always a good game for getting to know each other as each block has a different question on that the students have to read out and answer!

I left them all planning their night out to Cheeky Monkeys! Have fun guys, I hope class isn’t too much of a struggle for you tomorrow!

At today’s Coffee Club the two Gustavo’s from Brazil taught us how to play Truco; a card game that is popular in Brazil and Spain!

I still don’t understand the rules well enough to explain, but me and Richard were the winners!

As it is such a beautiful winters day everyone then headed off to the beach… not before finishing all the Tim Tams of course!!

It was just myself, Maya and Munae at Coffee Lounge today as everyone else had gone surfing!!

This meant plenty of Tim Tams for each of us!!

We played a game of Uno which I quickly won, but Maya and Munae continued for what seemed to be a never ending game! They each kept getting down to their last card before then having to pick up multiple cards, numerous times! Munae eventually won second place and they then headed off to join their friends at the beach!

We’ve been enjoying some beautifully warm and sunny winter days here in Byron Bay!

Today we sat in the sun for Tim Tams, Jenga and Scattergories!!

Whilst us girls enjoyed our chocolates and chats the boys had fun practicing their soccer skills!
