Sushi Making! May 9th

Thursday afternoon’s activity was the delicious art of sushi making!

We got to work preparing the vegetables and avocado.

Nanaka and Ai helped lead the way with the most important job.. The rice!

We had special short grain sushi rice but the rice cookers were proving to be slightly difficult and stopped working half way through. As a group we decided to finish cooking the rice on the stove.

In the mean time, Mano decided to taste test the wasabi.. he managed to convince Nami and Ai to do the same.. as you can imagine, it wasn’t pleasant.

Then the taste testing then moved on to a sweeter flavor; carrots and nutella chocolate spread… hmm.. Strange combination, but surprisingly, it was quite yummy.

Happy faces all round as the rice is finally cooked to Hongki’s high standards!

Ai and Nanaka helped cool the rice and added the vinegar and sugar to flavor.

Then it was time to roll!

Ai showed us how to make onigiri and the rest of us used the sushi mats to make hand rolls.

Now for the best part.. eating! They looked and tasted amazing! Well done everyone 🙂

Sushi Making! March 6th

Sushi

On Wednesday last week we made Sushi! We all met in the kitchen at 11.30am.

Our sushi ingredients: Yaki Nori (seaweed sheets), sushi rice, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, caster sugar, bamboo rolling mat, mayonnaise, cling wrap, tuna, smoked salmon, cream cheese, carrots, avocado, cucumber and of course – pickled ginger and wasabi!

There is a lot of preparation involved in sushi-making so everyone had different jobs to do. The first thing was to get the rice cooking! We had special short grain ‘sushi rice’. Cooking rice can be difficult and we wanted it to be perfect so Jesse took charge, using his phone as a timer.

While the rice was cooking, everyone took to chopping and preparing the vegetables, cutting them into thin long strips, long enough to fit in a whole sushi roll.

The bamboo sushi mats had to be covered in cling film – this helps with making smooth rolls, so the rice doesn’t get stuck in the bamboo. It is also keeps the mats clean!

Opening the tuna proved to be quite the challenge! 😀

While we waited for the rice to cook, we covered all our filling ingredients and went outside to chat 🙂

Very excited that the rice is done! 😀

Sushi rolling time!

Check out these perfect rolls!

Some people left theirs as full rolls, while others cut them into little bite size pieces.

Everyone very happy with their sushi 😀

Sushi Making! 6 March

On Wednesday we made sushi here at Lexis Byron!

We patiently waited for the rice to cook in the rice cooker, but after an hour had to put some of in the microwave to speed the process up! We were all hungry and keen to start making our rolls…

For fillings we had tuna, cream cheese, smoked salmon, avocado, carrot and cucumber.

One of our students, Dana, works in a sushi restaurant and rolled me a delicious tuna and avocado roll ❤ Thanks Dana and Surim for teaching us how to make sushi!

Sushi Making! 6 December

Yesterday’s activity was Sushi Making!

We all worked together to prepare the rice and fillings, with everyone having their own job, whether it be cutting carrots, slicing avocado or cooking the rice.

Once everything was prepped we all sat around the table to prepare our own individual sushi rolls. For fillings we had a choice of tuna, smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, carrots and avocado.
