Byron Bay Beaches! ☀️

The days are getting hotter which means that it’s Summer! The days are also getting longer which means more time to spend at the beach!

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches, with many different options for water sports, beach activities, exploring or just relaxing.

BELONGIL BEACH

Stretching to the north of Byron, Belongil Beach is one of the few dog-friendly beaches in the area. It has lovely views up the coast, tall sand dunes and a secluded feeling making it ideal for walking or relaxing. You can walk there from town via Main Beach and there’s a track to the Belongil cafes, including the Tree House which is a great venue for food, drinks and live music.

Belongil-Beach-scene

THE WRECK

To the left of the Main Beach car park, at the start of Belongil beach, is the Wreck. More of a surf break than a beach of its own, it’s named after the wreck of the SS Wollongbar, which sticks out of the water just beyond the waves. Mostly popular with surfers, there are no lifeguards and can get a little wilder than some of the other swimming beaches near town, but there’s often more space on the sand for beach games like cricket or soccer.

MAIN BEACH

Just a short walk from the centre town, Main Beach is Byron’s most popular beach. With Julian Rocks visible on the horizon and the Byron lighthouse overlooking it from the headland, it’s Byron’s iconic beach spot. There are grassy hills behind the beach perfect for picnicking, as well as BBQs and other facilities. Lifeguards from the local surf club patrol the water so it’s a safe swimming beach.

byronbay-beach-1140x570

CLARKES

Clarkes is further down the sand from Main Beach, along the curve of the bay. Patrolled in the summer by lifeguards, it’s a safe place to swim that’s just past the heart of the town. It’s got a permanent beach volleyball net and rocky areas for snorkeling, plus there’s usually a bit more space on the sand to spread out or play beach games.

b35c0-s1446-843

THE PASS

Further along from Clarkes at the other end of the bay is The Pass. With views of Julian rocks, Main Beach, Belongil and the hinterland beyond, it’s one of the most picturesque spots in Byron Bay. It’s also a famous surf break renowned for its long waves, which can be ridden all the way to Clarkes when the conditions are right. It’s a beautiful walk along the sand from town and has a lookout that oversees the entire bay.

right_img_pass

WATEGOS

Nestled at the foot of the headland, around the corner from The Pass, is Wategos beach. Secluded in a beautiful forest bay of its own, it’s popular with surfers and swimmers alike. With waves wrapping around the headland that offer long, leisurely rides and plenty of shallow areas that are great for kids, Wategos is the epitome of a family beach. It’s also one of Byron’s best picnic spots because it’s in its element at dusk.

wategos

LITTLE WATEGOS

As the name suggests, Little Wategos is similar to Wategos beach but on a smaller scale. It’s just around the corner from Wategos and is easy to get to along the sand in low tide. When the water’s up high, it can be reached by a longer walk over the headland. Because of this dependence on the tides, it’s often unoccupied, making it feel like your own private beach.

LittleWatgeosPano

COSY CORNER

The other side of the headland is less protected than the bay. The beaches here get more wind and are often choppier, but they also usually have bigger waves. The first of these is Cosy Corner. It’s nestled at the bottom of the headland so it’s partially protected from the wind. With cleanly formed, decent sized waves, it’s a favourite among the local surfers.

Cosy-Corner-Byron-Bay

TALLOW BEACH

Further down from Cosy Corner on this side of the headland is Tallow Beach. With various breaks along it, there’s the potential to get a surfing spot all to yourself. It’s dog friendly and has views of the headlands further down the coast, so it’s also a nice beach for walking.

2.1292922151.tallow-beach

SUFFOLK BEACH

In the middle of the open stretch of sand to the south of Byron Bay is Suffolk Beach. A five-minute drive from town, it’s dog friendly, usually virtually empty and has stunning views of both Byron Bay and Broken Head. Long and unprotected, it’s often windier than the bay and has good surf breaks at various points along it.

Broken_Head_From_Tallow_Beach_October_2008.jpg

BROKEN HEAD

On the other end of the sand from the Cape Byron Headland is Broken Head beach. Protected by its own headland and surrounded by rainforest, it’s popular with both surfers and swimmers. A ten-minute drive from Byron, it has views of the lighthouse on its northern horizon and it’s quieter than the beaches closer to the town.

broken-head-holiday-park-300x199

KINGS BEACH

Just around the corner from Broken Head is the beautifully remote Kings beach. Although not officially a nude beach, it’s often treated as it is so beware if visiting with children. Kings is a little tricky to get to, but worth it once you’re there. It’s accessible by driving across the top of the headland along a gravel road, just off Broken Head’s main road. Once you reach the Kings car park, it’s a steep ten-minute walk down to beach.

BBI3428

WHITES BEACH

Further around the headland from Kings is the less well-known Whites beach. Reachable in the same way, its walking track is a little further along the gravel road. Nestled in the heart of the Broken Head rainforest, Whites is stunningly secluded and is one of the quietest beaches in the Byron area.

Surf Lesson! September 16

It is a beautiful day in Byron Bay and we are making the most of it here at Lexis Byron Bat! This morning eight students and myself headed down to The Wreck for a surf lesson with the team at Let’s Go Surfing!

img_4700

We had two awesome instructors, Blake and Johnny, teaching us how to surf. We were split into two groups – five who had never surfed before, and four of us who had done it once or twice in the past.

After getting kitted out with our wetsuits and surfboards, we first learnt a few of the basic skills about surfing while still on the beach. We learnt not only how to paddle and stand up on the board, but also about how to spot the best part of the beach to surf at and identifying rips.

img_4706

The surf was a little rough but still small enough for us as beginners to feel confident in the water. We each caught wave after wave, putting what we had learnt on the beach into practice and eventually standing up!

img_4710

A few of the students seemed to be naturals at surfing, and were standing up and riding the waves in no time at all. During just one hour in the water, they were able to keep improving and refining their skills to become more confident with their surfing.

Everyone managed to stand up at least once or twice by the end of the lesson and there was a smile on every student’s face the whole time!

Surf Lesson! September 8

This afternoon 14 of our Lexis students headed out into the ocean for the 1-hour Surf Lesson with the awesome team at Let’s Go Surfing!

img_4645

For almost the whole group, this was their first time on a surfboard so they were very excited to be able to learn in such a great location as Byron Bay. After getting kitted out with their wetsuits and surfboards, they headed down to the beach at The Wreck, learnt the basics of surfing and then were straight into the water. Everyone managed to stand up (with a few spectacular falls on the way!) and had a lot of fun learning this great Aussie past-time.

Thanks to Blake and Johnny, the instructors for the lesson today!

Surf Lesson! August 8

Last week, on Wednesday, we had our 1-hour Surf Lesson. After getting our wetsuits on, carrying the surfboards, walking down to the beach and being taught a few of the basics on the sand, there came a rumble of thunder and crack of lightning over the ocean! The storm was forecast to pass right over Byron Bay, so unfortunately it was not safe to continue our lesson. Not to be put off by this, we rescheduled our lesson for the next week and we went along to learn to surf yesterday afternoon!

IMG_4293

The weather was looking nice and the surf conditions good, so we quickly put on our wetsuits, grabbed the surfboards and walked down to the beach to begin our lesson. Our instructor Katie recapped the basic skills we had learnt last week but not been able to put into practice yet, and we were soon in the water to test them out!

IMG_4298

We caught a few waves to get the feel of being out in the surf, then returned to the sand to learn to most important part – how to stand up. Katie gave us some excellent advice on how to do this, then we were back in the water to try it ourselves.

IMG_4300

The first few times, while still getting used to the feel of being on the surfboard and trying to remember everything we had been taught, resulted in falling off the board almost as soon as getting to our feet! But with a bit more practice and the ongoing support of our instructor, each and every one of us managed to get to our feet and stay standing on the board to ride some small waves.

IMG_4301

It was a lot of fun and all of us are keen to get back out there as soon as possible! Thanks to our wonderful instructor Katie from the team at Let’s Go Surfing for teaching us how to surf!

English + Surfing with Gaspard!

At Lexis Byron Bay we have a range of courses available for students wanting to improve their English skills in Australia. A lot of students choose to come to Byron Bay for the beachside lifestyle and to learn how to surf. Why not combine all of this and do the English in Action – Surfing course in Byron Bay?

IMG_4084

Gaspard is from France and is graduating this week after completing the English in Action – Surfing course. Gaspard lives in the surfing town of Biarritz, France, so he was already a good surfer when he arrived in Australia. He chose to come to Australia to learn English because he has never been here before and has had friends tell him how beautiful the country is. He had also heard that Australia is one of the best places to surf. After almost four weeks in Byron Bay, Gaspard says his favourite thing is that there are always waves to surf and friends to surf with.

Gaspard 11

Gaspard feels that his English has improved and his classes have been good during his time at Lexis. His surfing has also improved a lot during his time in Australia. He says the team at Lets Go Surfing! are all very friendly and are great surfers, and did an excellent job helping him to improve his surf skills.

IMG_3848

Gaspard would recommend the English in Action – Surfing course to anyone interested in improving their English and their surfing. He believes it makes it more interesting and fun to study English in the mornings and spend the afternoons surfing.

Gaspard 6

After graduating from Lexis Byron Bay this week, Gaspard is looking forward to returning to France to show off his new surfing skills to his friends!

Living and Studying in Byron Bay – An interview with Santi!

SANTI

Santi is from Valencia, Spain and has been at Lexis Byron Bay for 20 weeks, studying in the FCE and CAE classes.

12825441_10156565703720612_1956726555_n

Santi decided to study in Australia so that he could improve his English. He wanted to travel to a place far from home with good weather, beaches and surf. He has always wanted to visit Australia, so studying here was a natural choice!

1932026_10156570931220612_2022428988_n

When he first arrived in Australia, Santi spent the first month in Sydney before coming to Byron Bay. While he did really like Sydney, he prefers living in Byron Bay as he enjoys the relaxed travelers lifestyle here. It is an easy town to get to know, while still having many special places to discover and explore.

12207871_966996546688579_1777551203_n

There are many things about Byron Bay that Santi believes makes this place so special. His favourite things are the beautiful beaches, feeling like you are living in nature all the time, and the good friends he has made here.

IMG_2884

During his time here, Santi has held a job for 4 months working in a pizza place in the nearby town of Brunswick Heads. He felt that he was able to find a good balance with working after finishing school each day and that the work environment and his colleagues really helped him improve his English.

12674299_10156446971415612_1234707342_n

Santi recommends studying at Lexis Byron Bay, whether it is for just one month or for a whole year. He thinks the staff are great and says that the teachers are helpful, listen to the students and are very good at helping you to improve your English. When Santi first arrived in Australia, he had a difficult time understanding the Australian accent. Now, he feels that he has developed his English to an almost fluent level that he is very happy with.

group

After first studying in FCE and then moving up to CAE, Santi has found the classes to improve his English in all areas. While the exam format of these classes are similar, he found that CAE is at a more advanced level which has enabled him to expand his skills in speaking, grammar and vocabulary. In both classes he has enjoyed the learning environment and said the teachers are fantastic. 12834493_10156565703920612_1100447175_n

Santi believes Byron Bay is such a unique place even compared to other places in Australia. There is always something happening in town, from the variety of live music to the great waves and good  surf at the beaches. The feeling Santi gets from Byron Bay is very special, including from all the nice people both living here and travelling through.

12714198_10156464023015612_109890388_n

After Santi completes his studies at Lexis Byron Bay in two weeks time, he will travel to Sydney for two days before flying to Bali to meet up with some other Lexis friends there. When he returns to Spain, he plans to study International Business at University. For this he believes his level of English will be very helpful in the future.
