Sushi Making! 12 July

Today’s activity was Sushi Making, which is always popular here at Lexis Byron!

IMG_5108

I printed out instructions for how to make the rice, but luckily some of our lovely Japanese students stepped in to tell us how it’s really done!

Juliana, from Brazil, also told us about how they make their sushi in Brazil…sweet! Lots of us were queuing up to try her strawberry filled rolls!

Everyone else had more savoury options to fill theirs! These included tuna, salmon, cucumber, carrot, cream cheese, cucumber and avocado!

We all had a fun afternoon and nice tasty treat at the end!

Thank you to our Japanese teachers 🙂

Surprise Visitors! 6 July

Last Friday we had not one, but two, previous Lexis students return with gifts for our Lexis team!

Our remarkable Judit, who studied with us for 10 months and also did a outstanding job as our school cleaner, returned from a trip to Bali and bought myself, Lisa and Koko some beautiful soaps and organic coffee for all the staff.

Then the lovely Merce came to say a final farewell after 6 months in Byron. She finished our Cambridge First course last month and has just been travelling in Thailand. She brought us in a delicious cake to say thank you to all our Lexis staff ❤

It’s always so wonderful to have past students pop by and especially to know how much they enjoyed Lexis and appreciated their time and the team here!

Thank you beautiful ladies! We hope to see you again one day ❤

Mixed Skills – Shopping Trip

Teacher Kristy tells us about the shopping trip she took with her Mixed Skills Options class…

In Mixed Skills we went shopping!  We learned language for shopping and hit the shops:

“Do you have this in a size 10?”

“Where is the changing room?”

“This doesn’t fit.  It’s too long.”

“Where do I pay?”

Here are some videos and their shop conversations…didn’t they do well?!

😊😊😊

Kana                      Excuse me, I’m size 6, do you have this one in an 8?

Shop Assistant  Let’s go have a look.

Where did you get it from?

Kana                      I’m from Japan 😉 Ah, from over there.

Shop Assistant  We’ll go and check that out.  Sorry, we don’t have a 6.

Is it good enough?  You can try a 10.

Kana                      Yes, thank you.  Where is the changing room?

Shop Assistant  Over here.

Kana                      Thank you very much!

😊😊😊

Song                      Is this a small size?

Shop Assistant  It’s a 28, it’s the smallest size we do.

Song                      Can I try this on?

Shop Assistant  Yes, of course you can.

Song                      Where is the changing room?

Shop Assistant  It’s here.

Let me know if you need another size.

😊😊😊

Asana                    I like it!

Shop Assistant  It’s so nice!  I love the sleeves.

Asa                         It’s a little bit too small…

Shop Assistant  Too small?

Asa                         Yes.

Shop Assistant  I don’t think so…I think the next size might be a bit too big.

Asa                         My hips are wide.

Shop Assistant  Do you think the next size will be better?  Is this the 6?  Do you want me to see if I’ve got an 8?  Yeah?  No, there’s one out the back.

Shop Assistant  What’s your name?

Asa                         Asa.  A S A.

Shop Assistant  I’m Tracey.

Asa                         Nice to meet you.

Doesn’t Asa look beautiful in that dress!

Graduation! 6 July

Congratulations and farewell to our seven students graduating from Lexis Byron Bay today!

Miyu

Miyu, from Japan, graduates from Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class. We are very sad to be saying goodbye to her after 34 weeks at Lexis! Miyu is a friendly, respectful, kind person and we will all miss her very much! She started with us in Pre-Intermediate, completed the Cambridge First course, and now graduates Upper Intermediate with an A! Well done for all your achievements Miyu. Enjoy the rest of your time in Byron and we will hopefully see you again one day ❤

Tania, from Spain, graduates from Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class. Claudia says it has been fantastic having her in the class and her enthusiasm really contributed to a positive class attitude. She is a motivated student and should be very proud of all the hard work she put in and for graduating with an A grade! Enjoy your break Tania and we’ll see you in September for Cambridge!

Ugo

Ugo, from France, graduates from Michelle’s Pre-Intermediate class. He was only with us a short 2 weeks but it was a pleasure to have met him! He is a polite, hard working student who always volunteered to answer difficult questions in class. As well as our English classes he also took surf lessons arranged through Lexis, and made quick improvements here as well as with his English!

Rod

Rodrigo, from Brazil, graduates from Mel’s Intermediate class. He is an extremely friendly, funny, cheerful student and we will miss seeing his smiling face around campus. He got on well with all of his classmates and made lots of friend during his time at Lexis.  As well as making the most of his time in Byron he has also improved his English a great deal in his 14 weeks with us! Wishing you all the best for the future Rodrigo!

Juliane, from Brazil, graduates from Mel’s Intermediate class. It has been an absolute joy having her here at Lexis. We have loved her positivity, easy going nature and sense of humour. She should be very proud of the progress she has made, starting with us in Elementary 20 weeks ago. It was so lovely to have met you Juliane and we hope you enjoy your travels!

Ayaka, from Japan, graduates from Mel’s Intermediate class. Mel says it has been a pleasure having her in class, adding that she always participated well with her classmates and participated well in all activities. We hope you enjoyed your time in Byron Bay and the remainder of your time in Australia. Good luck with your farm work Ayaka!

Elisabet Morales Guillen

Elisabet, from Spain, graduates from Kristy’s Elementary class. Kristy described her as a lovely person and student. She has improved in all areas of her English during her time at Lexis and graduates with an A, with her writing and reading being at Pre-Intermediate level; well done Elisabet! Teen Activity Programme

It’s TAP (Teen Activity Programme) season at Lexis Byron Bay! At this time of year, budding young surfers from all over the world come to join our English and Surfing programme, where they study English in the mornings and have a surf lesson in the afternoons.

Claire, our Student Services and Activities Officer, is amongst the staff members here to welcome them and help them with any questions they may have.

TAP Surfing Students: Theo, Sacha and Ugo with Claire

We asked Claire to answer the following questions…

  1. What languages do you speak?

Other than English, I speak basic Spanish and French. In the future I would like to try and learn Japanese; so far I can say hello, goodbye and thank you!

  1. What countries have you lived in?

I’m from England so lived there most of my life before moving to Australia nearly 4 years ago. I have also lived in Spain (where my dad lives) and worked in Guatemala for 2 months training native speakers for English speaking roles.

  1. What do you enjoy most about your job?

The amazing team I get to work with and being part of the student’s journey! We really do have such lovely students who come to Lexis Byron and it’s wonderful to be able to help them and watch their confidence with the language grow. As well as being very rewarding my job is also a lot of fun!

  1. What are the most popular things that Junior students in Byron Bay enjoy doing?

Surfing is of course the favourite and Byron is one of the best places in the world for this!

They also enjoy meeting students from other countries and being able to hang out with them at the beach after a morning of studying!

When they’re not surfing or at the beach we also have free afternoon activities they can participate in; with skateboarding, soccer and volleyball being amongst the most popular with the juniors!

  1. What is Byron Bay’s best-kept secret?

Winter is the best time to come to surf! There are far fewer people so it’s much easier to catch your own wave!

  1. What is the best advice you could give to juniors and their parents?

Coming to Lexis Byron Bay will be an unforgettable experience they will forever be thankful for!

When they are here they should talk with students from other countries so they can practice their English as much as possible, and have new friends to visit once they return home!
