Hiroshima Juniors Surf Lesson! March 22nd

cover.JPG

Today we hit Main Beach in Byron for a very special surf lesson for our Hiroshima Juniors! The lovely Blake from Let’s Go Surfing picked us up outside the school at 9am and we headed to their shop to get fitted with wet-suits and surfboards.

Here are the guys, all ready to hit the beach!

It was super hot by the time we hit the beach so the first thing everybody did was jump into the sea to cool down

The next thing we did – stretching! Very important before hitting the waves.

Everyone gathered around as the instructors explained the basics of surfing and how to kneel up on the board when in the water.

Safety in the water is top priority. Below, our instructor Victor explains what a rip is and how to get out of it if we encounter one in the sea.

After a while in the water, everyone got back out again and the instructors demonstrated how to stand up on the board when in the water.

Before long, they were surfing like pros!

Check out these pros! 🙂

What better way to finish our surf lesson than with a picnic by the sea. We are already looking forward to next week’s lesson!

Aussie Food Tasting!March 21st – Morning

cover

Yesterday in the student lounge, we held a special Aussie food tasting activity! There are lots of special treats and savoury snacks that are very poplular in Australia and we got to learn (and taste!) more about them.

We had a range of delicious (and some not so delicious…!) foods to try:

  • Musk Sticks (pink semi-soft sweet stick with floral, musk flavours)
  • Allen’s Red Frogs (chewy jelly treats)
  • Macadamia Nuts (found in both New South Wales & Queensland)
  • Anzac Biscuits (oat biscuits)
  • Vegemite (yeast extract spread, popular with toast!)
  • Mini meat pies (pastry pies filled with meat, gravy, onion, mushrooms & cheese)
  • Sausage Rolls (savoury pastry snack & popular party food)
  • Caramello Koala (chocolate bar filled with caramel)
  • Tim Tams (chocolate covered biscuits)
  • Lamingtons (a small sponge cake square coated in chocolate and coconut)

Among the favourites were TimTams and sausage rolls! 🙂

Brave students trying Vegemite… 😀

Everyone enjoyed the delicious treats and our Hiroshima Juniors got to mingle with some of the others students from their classes too 🙂

Have YOU tried all of these Aussie favourites yet!? 😉

Hiroshima Juniors trip to Byron Farmers Market! March 21st

IMG_2463

On Thursday morning we all went to the Byron Bay Farmers Market! It was a beautiful morning so we enjoyed the walk down together at 9am. This market is on every Thursday morning at Butler St Reserve from 8-11am.

Walking down Jonson Street towards the market!

The taco stand proved very popular among the students!

We walked around in the sunshine and sampled some different snacks and juice. There were some performers at different areas, playing music, singing and even dancing!

Buying some local and Manuka honey 🙂

Everyone enjoyed the market and we all left with full bellies and happy hearts 😀

Hiroshima Juniors Coffee Club! March 20th

img_2387.jpg

Yesterday, we held coffee club in the morning especially for our Hiroshima Juniors group! We all met outside the student lounge downstairs at 9.00am and enjoyed some delicious coffees and TimTams 🙂

Learning how to say ‘cheers’ 😀

IMG_2379

We all chatted together and got to know each other a little better. We spoke about where we are from and what it is like there. I learned that Hiroshima is great for oysters and lemon trees, with lemon cake being a favourite way to use the lemons!

I learned about everyone’s school life and what they like/don’t like in school. Everyone has different hobbies, interests and aspirations, which is very interesting to chat about together. Some students are sporty, playing tennis (with a hard ball, something I just learned about yesterday!) and football, while others are musical and enjoy piano and trombone!

We were so engrossed in our chats and getting to know eachother that we forgot to play any of our games! Next week, we will! 😉

Until next time…

Hiroshima Juniors Lighthouse walk! March 19th

3On Tuesday morning, we embarked on a beautiful walk up to Byron Bay Lighthouse. We left Lexis at 9am, taking a taxi to Captain Cooke’s car park by the beach. From here, we set off on the first part of our journey by foot.

IMG_2282The views along the way were amazing so we had plenty of stops for photographs. It was blue sky and sunshine so the colour of the water was a beautiful and clear turquoise.

We made it to the lighthouse! 😀

It was very hot so we decided to relax at the top with some ice cream! 😀

All ready to head back to Lexis, taking in more stunning views as we walked.

Lexis Juniors Walking Tour of Byron! March 18th

Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming eight junior students from Hiroshima, Japan. Once they were all settled in to Lexis, I took them on a little walking tour of Byron, to introduce them to their new surroundings and home for the next two weeks. 😀

1

We set off from Lexis on Ruskin Street and walked down Jonson Street, towards the sea, stopping on the way for some delicious ice cream!

3

Enjoying their ice-cream at Main Beach

Everyone enjoyed walking along the water’s edge and taking some photos. The clouds in the sky looked spectacular before the rain came and we could see the light house in the distance!

Time to walk back to town before the rain hits!

20

Luckily, when the rain came, we were under cover and watched as the brief but impressive thunder storm passed us by.

Before long, the sun was out again!
