Wine & Cheese Tasting! October 11th

Last Friday afternoon’s activity was the very popular Wine & Cheese Tasting! πŸ˜€

Students from the morning and afternoon classes gathered at 5.30pm to enjoy the free wine and cheese that we had prepared in front of the school.

The students were welcome to help themselves to the range of wines including: Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Rose and Moscato.

We also had seven different cheeses to try: brie, camenbert, gouda, gorgonzoula, apricot & cream cheese, spring onion & chives and tasty cheddar.

It didn’t take long before everything was devoured and the students set off into town to continue the Friday celebrations πŸ™‚

I hope you all had a great weekend! πŸ™‚

Cape Byron Lighthouse Tour! July 29th

It was a stunning day yesterday for a walk up the Lighthouse with our junior students.

If you look closely in this photo, directly above Himari, you can see the splash of a whale!

Will from The Byron Bay Tour Company was kind enough to drop us at Watego’s beach to start our walk. We had some time to enjoy the waves and play in the sand before starting the journey up the hill.

There was a lot of beautiful scenery and wildlife to enjoy on the way up!

Schuichi was lucky enough to have Daijiro help him as it was a very step walk! πŸ˜€

This photo is taken from the look out at the most Eastern point of Australia!

The view from the top of the lighthouse was beautiful. We were lucky enough to see lots of whales and sail boats out on the horizon. Our students got many beautiful photos.

Hiroshima Juniors Surf Lesson @ The Wreck, Byron Bay – March 28

Header

This morning we hit the beach for our second surf lesson! It was a different kind of day – not as sunny, but the clouds and light were beautiful on the beach.

Some of the students returned to do a surf lesson, while the rest were happy to swim, walk the beach and pick interesting rocks and shells πŸ™‚

Wet-suits ready to go!

Blake from Lets Go Surfing picked us up promptly at 9am, dropping us to their shop by the beach. Once everyone got fitted with their boards and wet-suits, we were ready to hit the waves!

On our way to the beach

Everyone had a quick dip in the sea to cool down before the lesson.

We had the lovely Amy as our instructor today and she went through all the important points, tips and safety instructions before they were ready to hit the waves.

While they were preparing for surf, the others went for another dip!

Ready for the waves!!!

We were later joined by Lexis students Nico and Anselmo!

Today we had the very fun and creative activity of Boomerang painting! Our Hiroshima Juniors joined withΒ  their classmates and together, we all painted our own individual boomerang.

Everyone ready to start! πŸ™‚

I had some painted boomerangs to show as examples, as well as some information about the meaning behind all the symbols – an interesting insight into the traditional Aboriginal style, used to tell stories through the artists paintings.

Hiroshima Juniors Coffee Club! March 27th

IMG_2713

This morning, we sheltered from the morning rain, in the comfort of the student lounge! We all met at 9am and began our time with a quick catch up on everyone’s week, finding out what we all got up to in the evenings and reflecting on their time so far in Byron. We all agreed that the last week and half has gone by very quickly! πŸ™‚

We all enjoyed some delicious coffees and Tim Tams while playing some games of Jenga and Uno.

CHEERS! (or ‘kampai’, as they say in Japan πŸ™‚ )

Hiroshima Juniors Day at Emmanuel Anglican College – March 25th

Arriving at the school!

On Monday morning, we left Lexis Byron Bay campus and headed, by bus, to Emmanuel Anglican College in Ballina. We all gathered in their school library and were greeted by staff and students in both English and Japanese! Each student was paired with a ‘buddy‘ – a student who would take them to their classes and look after them throughout the day.

After our welcome, each student was given a tour of the beautiful school grounds by their buddy, before joining them for their morning classes, which included Maths and Science.

Enjoying some chats with their buddies during the morning break.

Enjoying a fun game of Handball during break time!

After break, I joined some of the students in English class, where the teacher was explaining how to structure an essay.

From 12pm, we joined the Japanese classes! This was lots of fun and each group of students (Year 8 and 10) greeted our Hiroshima Juniors in Japanese, while our Juniors greeted them back in English. Everyone had a little chat to get to know eachother better.

During these classes, our Hiroshima Juniors gave a brief presentation to groups of students, introducing them to their home-place, Hiroshima.

Some Japanese-themed decorations in the Japanese room.

Activities in these classes included ‘Kahoot’ – an interactive learning game to help with language skills, listening tests and finally, a ‘speed chat’ – where each of our students had 5 minutes to chat with a student in English, before moving on to the next student when time was up.

At 3pm it was time to leave and we all met at the front of the school, where everyone had the chance to say goodbye to their buddies. Thanks for having us, Emmanuel Anglican College! πŸ™‚
