She wants to go to University and is interested in jobs which use the English language, so it is very important to her to improve her English speaking skills while here in Australia.

Happy Lexis Students… at WORK! :)

Here at Lexis, we have students from all over the world. Some come to Byron to study for a week, some for a few weeks and some, for many months! I caught up with some of our students who are lucky enough to be on a working holiday visa, to ask them a few things about their working life here in Byron…

judit

Judith joined us from Spain in April of last year and will be with us until next November! We are delighted to also have her on board with us here at Lexis. Read on to find out how 🙂

1. WHERE DO YOU WORK?

I work in Lexis English School as a cleaner and in Orgasmic Falafel restaurant as a waitress in the street offering falafels to people, as well as cleaning, preparing and helping to put away chairs, tables etc.

2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB AND WORKING IN BYRON BAY?

The flexible schedule in most Byron jobs and the work atmosphere. Byron is a relaxed place, of course there are some busy days with stress, but there is no comparison with most of the jobs in Spain and probably in Sydney or other big Australian cities. I also like that in Byron, there are a lot of jobs where you finish at 5pm and you have a whole evening free or if you work in a restaurant, you can enjoy the whole day and work in the afternoon/evening. In Spain, most of the jobs are ‘split-shift’ so it feels like you just work all day, then go home to sleep.

3. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB – AND WHERE?

My dream job is to work in a big company, analysing employees – analysing their worries, motivation, personal life and then try to create a better working environment for them, for example – maybe one employee will be more efficient and happy at work if the boss lets them finish 30 minutes earlier so that they can pick up their child from school. I would like a job that allows me to travel – a company who has offices all over the world, so that travelling is part of my job. I would love to have a flexible schedule – I could work really hard for a few weeks and then travel for one or two weeks at the end.

4. ANYTHING ELSE TO SAY?

Today is a perfect day to be proud of yourself! Have a lovely day 🙂

Leo joined us last September from Brazil and is studying at Lexis until December next.

1. WHERE DO YOU WORK?

2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB AND WORKING IN BYRON BAY?

I love that I’m improving my English by dealing with customers and speaking with natives more often and that I’m working in a beautiful town 🙂

3. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB – AND WHERE?

My dream job would be working in something that makes me feel happy every day. Ideally, this would be in Psychology and would be close to the ocean! 🙂

IMG_1439

Ania joined us last September from Spain and is with us until next August

1. WHERE DO YOU WORK?

I work in The Bower (hotel) as a cleaner and also in Orgasmic Falafel restaurant as a waitress.

2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB AND WORKING IN BYRON BAY?

I like working here because when you finish work you can enjoy the beach and the nature! It’s the best way to enjoy Byron – ‘like a local’! 🙂

3. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB – AND WHERE?

Working as a nurse! (I am a qualified nurse). This is why I need to improve my English and work hard to achieve my goal.

4. ANYTHING ELSE TO SAY? 🙂

Living this experience in Byron is the best decision that I’ve ever made ❤

Maria has been with us since December and will study here until next July. She joins us from Spain!

1. WHERE DO YOU WORK?

I work as a cleaner and dishwasher here in Byron when I finish my classes each evening and at the weekends.

2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB AND WORKING IN BYRON BAY?

I like working here because Byron is a magical place with an amazing quality of life.

3. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB – AND WHERE?

I am a qualified dentist and would love to work as one here!

_____________

Pedro joined us from Spain last December and will be with us until the end of May.

1. WHERE DO YOU WORK?

I work in town, in Bayger. It’s a burger place, where we make really lovely and healthy burgers.

2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB AND WORKING IN BYRON BAY?

The people! The biggest beauty of Byron is the place and people. I work with a lovely team and the customers are really kind and patient. Everybody says ‘no rush’ 🙂 It’s still hospitality but in this environment, totally different vibes 🙂

3. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB – AND WHERE?

Motorcycle tester and seller – in my home country of Spain or the Canary Islands.

1. WHERE DO YOU WORK?

At the Rails!

2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB AND WORKING IN BYRON BAY?

3. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB – AND WHERE?

I am a Civil Engineer so my dream is to start working in this area, ideally back in my home country, Brazil.

Photography! February 7th

On Thursday last, we gathered in the student lounge to chat all things photography!

img_1311.jpg

We met at 11am and had a range of phones and cameras between us. We had a brief introductory chat to establish what we all knew about photography.

We all learned about composition (the placement of the subject(s) in the photo) and why good composition is so important. We also learned about composition guidelines such as the Rule of Thirds and how to apply that to a photo.

Finally, we also looked at perspective which was a really fun one to capture together 🙂

IMG_1341

Having fun with our perspective shots! (See below how they took this)

IMG_1338

Some more process shots of students capturing some exaggerated perspective 😀

Check out these awesome portraits of our students.

(great composition too! 😉 )

Jewellery Making! January 31st

Yesterday was the last day in January and the last activity on our January Lexis calendar was jewellery making! We all met in the student lounge at 11.30am. I had a basket full of amazing craft supplies including a range of beads, shells, glass stones, wire, feathers, threads and various types of macrame cord.

I showed the group how to make a crystal wrap necklace, using a macrame knotting technique. For this, we each chose one stone, then used 3 long lengths of cord to begin our piece. We then make a little net to tightly hold the stone and braided the remaining pieces to hang around the neck. It is a relatively simple technique but takes time and precision.

Everyone was free to either follow what I was doing or use their imagination and create their own individual piece. To get them on their way, I showed them some examples and some tips and tricks for tying adjustable knots. We had necklaces, bracelets and ankle bracelets!

After the crystal net was formed, everyone had their own method for holding the necklace in place while they braided/plaited the remaining strings!

The finished pieces looked amazing! They were all so different – some people added beads and different knots to personalise their own.
