Today our Happy Student at Lexis Byron Bay is Amin!
Tell us a little about yourself Amin:
I am from Switerland and I live in Zuerich. I worked as a software engineer for the Swiss television. I decided to go to Byron Bay because I heard many good things about it and thought it would be a nice start for my trip. I stayed in Byron for six weeks.
Why did you choose Byron Bay?
I chose Byron Bay because I heard good things about it. I had a friend come here maybe six years ago and told me about it. So I did my research and I decided that it had the right mood for me.
What were your weaknesses in English before you came to Australia? Tell me more about your teachers and your classes.
I think my weaknessess… I think grammar… and the speaking and the fluency.
I was with Claudia as my teacher, and I think the class was the right fit for me. It was my right level. And I liked the class because there were people there from other nationalities. I also liked the activties that we did in the class like the markets, having coffee and Secret Santa… yeah, it was fun.
What was your favourite activity?
I liked the Beer Testing! Haha, that was fun! But I did like the Coffee Club too. You know, it was nice to play games and get to know other people and get to know them better.
Tell me about your accommodation/homestay…
I stayed at the accommodation downstairs (onsite) and I liked it. The room is good, it has nice people and a good kitchen to cook meals in. I really liked the communal tables- there were always people to be with if you wanted! Yeah, I really enjoyed it 🙂
What are your favourite things to do in Byron?
Surfing! I only started surfing here and I like it! I first had lessons through the school… maybe four lessons, then I bought a board and have met some friends and go surfing with them everyday! I might have to resell the board when I leave, but if I can fit it in my car I will take it on my travels with me in Australia!
I also really like the nightlife and the mood here in Byron Bay. Like the muscians and the buskers. It’s just nice to be out at night.
What is your most magical moment in Byron?
Oh, this is a tough one… so many… I suppose, I think surfing at sunset at Tallows Beach. We saw dolphins and then they were swimming past us… yes, this was the most magical moment.
What did you like the most about Lexis Byron?
I like the people here. The students and the employees. The people are really helpful. Whenever I had a question I would go to reception and they would help me straight away. Also the mood for a school is good.
What is your advice for people who are thinking about enrolling at Lexis Byron Bay?
My advice… stay at the accomodation onsite because it is close to the school and you get to meet more people! But then I guess it depends on the person… I also suggest to plan a trip early, but also at the same time to be spontaneous too.
Today our Happy Student at Lexis Byron Bay is Lucia!
Tell us a little about yourself Lucia:
I’m from Spain. Before coming to Byron I worked on my family’s sheep farm. I always wanted to learn English because I like to travel and it is a universal language. I’ve been here almost 2 months and I have one more month left. Then I will travel along the coast of New South Wales before returning to Spain.
Why did you choose Byron Bay?
Because I don’t like I cities. I live in the countryside. That’s why I chose Byron Bay.
What were your weaknesses in English before you came to Australia? Tell me more about your teachers and your classes.
Before coming to Australia, my weaknesses were listening and speaking English.
My teachers try to help me with listening and talk in class more often.
What was your favourite activity?
I think my favourite activity is the afternoon yoga classes, because you end the day relaxed.
Tell me about your accommodation/homestay…
I have lived in a hostel since I arrived and I think I will continue until I leave Byron.
What are your favourite things to do in Byron?
I like to walk around without tall buildings and without the noise of a city. I like to walk along the beach with few people. I also like to take walks to the lighthouse.
What is your most magical moment in Byron?
My most magical moment in Byron… when I climb to see the sunrise at the lighthouse.
What did you like the most about Lexis Byron?
What I liked most about this school is the small groups of students. It is good to have playful activities and games to assimilate the lessons.
What is your advice for people who are thinking about enrolling at Lexis Byron Bay?
My advice is to not think about it, to do it and enjoy it. It is an experience for a lifetime.

The days are getting hotter which means that it’s Summer! The days are also getting longer which means more time to spend at the beach!
We are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches, with many different options for water sports, beach activities, exploring or just relaxing.
BELONGIL BEACH
Stretching to the north of Byron, Belongil Beach is one of the few dog-friendly beaches in the area. It has lovely views up the coast, tall sand dunes and a secluded feeling making it ideal for walking or relaxing. You can walk there from town via Main Beach and there’s a track to the Belongil cafes, including the Tree House which is a great venue for food, drinks and live music.
THE WRECK
To the left of the Main Beach car park, at the start of Belongil beach, is the Wreck. More of a surf break than a beach of its own, it’s named after the wreck of the SS Wollongbar, which sticks out of the water just beyond the waves. Mostly popular with surfers, there are no lifeguards and can get a little wilder than some of the other swimming beaches near town, but there’s often more space on the sand for beach games like cricket or soccer.
MAIN BEACH
Just a short walk from the centre town, Main Beach is Byron’s most popular beach. With Julian Rocks visible on the horizon and the Byron lighthouse overlooking it from the headland, it’s Byron’s iconic beach spot. There are grassy hills behind the beach perfect for picnicking, as well as BBQs and other facilities. Lifeguards from the local surf club patrol the water so it’s a safe swimming beach.
CLARKES
Clarkes is further down the sand from Main Beach, along the curve of the bay. Patrolled in the summer by lifeguards, it’s a safe place to swim that’s just past the heart of the town. It’s got a permanent beach volleyball net and rocky areas for snorkeling, plus there’s usually a bit more space on the sand to spread out or play beach games.
THE PASS
Further along from Clarkes at the other end of the bay is The Pass. With views of Julian rocks, Main Beach, Belongil and the hinterland beyond, it’s one of the most picturesque spots in Byron Bay. It’s also a famous surf break renowned for its long waves, which can be ridden all the way to Clarkes when the conditions are right. It’s a beautiful walk along the sand from town and has a lookout that oversees the entire bay.
WATEGOS
Nestled at the foot of the headland, around the corner from The Pass, is Wategos beach. Secluded in a beautiful forest bay of its own, it’s popular with surfers and swimmers alike. With waves wrapping around the headland that offer long, leisurely rides and plenty of shallow areas that are great for kids, Wategos is the epitome of a family beach. It’s also one of Byron’s best picnic spots because it’s in its element at dusk.
LITTLE WATEGOS
As the name suggests, Little Wategos is similar to Wategos beach but on a smaller scale. It’s just around the corner from Wategos and is easy to get to along the sand in low tide. When the water’s up high, it can be reached by a longer walk over the headland. Because of this dependence on the tides, it’s often unoccupied, making it feel like your own private beach.
COSY CORNER
The other side of the headland is less protected than the bay. The beaches here get more wind and are often choppier, but they also usually have bigger waves. The first of these is Cosy Corner. It’s nestled at the bottom of the headland so it’s partially protected from the wind. With cleanly formed, decent sized waves, it’s a favourite among the local surfers.
TALLOW BEACH
Further down from Cosy Corner on this side of the headland is Tallow Beach. With various breaks along it, there’s the potential to get a surfing spot all to yourself. It’s dog friendly and has views of the headlands further down the coast, so it’s also a nice beach for walking.
SUFFOLK BEACH
In the middle of the open stretch of sand to the south of Byron Bay is Suffolk Beach. A five-minute drive from town, it’s dog friendly, usually virtually empty and has stunning views of both Byron Bay and Broken Head. Long and unprotected, it’s often windier than the bay and has good surf breaks at various points along it.
BROKEN HEAD
On the other end of the sand from the Cape Byron Headland is Broken Head beach. Protected by its own headland and surrounded by rainforest, it’s popular with both surfers and swimmers. A ten-minute drive from Byron, it has views of the lighthouse on its northern horizon and it’s quieter than the beaches closer to the town.
KINGS BEACH
Just around the corner from Broken Head is the beautifully remote Kings beach. Although not officially a nude beach, it’s often treated as it is so beware if visiting with children. Kings is a little tricky to get to, but worth it once you’re there. It’s accessible by driving across the top of the headland along a gravel road, just off Broken Head’s main road. Once you reach the Kings car park, it’s a steep ten-minute walk down to beach.
WHITES BEACH
Further around the headland from Kings is the less well-known Whites beach. Reachable in the same way, its walking track is a little further along the gravel road. Nestled in the heart of the Broken Head rainforest, Whites is stunningly secluded and is one of the quietest beaches in the Byron area.

Learn English in Byron Bay. Lexis English students study General English, IELTS, FCE, CAE and English plus Surfing in a friendly and professional school right in the heart of Byron Bay and only 15 minutes from the beach.
New starters Mirko from Switzerland and Marcel from Germany (back) and Yuki from Japan (front) are all doing the Teenage Residential Surf Camp with Rodolphe (far right) who started last week.
This week, Lexis English welcomes 6 new starters: Mirko from Switzerland, Marcel from Germany, Doen from Korea, Kennida (Kenya) from Italy, and Junya and Yuki from Japan.
Doen, from Korea, is here for 5 weeks before she heads up to Lexis Noosa to study Cambridge FCE. She studies Fashion Design at university in Korea but is taking a year out to learn English and discover the Australian culture.
Junya, from Japan will study at Lexis English for twelve weeks. He has already been in Australia for nearly two months and has spent that time travelling in the North and working as a fruit-picker in Bundaberg. He told me that he wants to learn English so that he can travel the world.
Kenya, from Italy has been in Australia for nearly a year. She also has a job in Byron Bay at Chichette’s Italian Restaurant. She will study at Lexis for four weeks, initially, but may stay longer. She likes playing tennis and dancing.
Mirko, Marcel and Yuki are all here doing our Teen Surf Camp, where they study English in the morning and learn to surf in the afternoon.
Mirko, from Switzerland, is here for two weeks. He is already sporty, as he likes skating, skiing and mountain biking so he should find surfing no problem! In the future, he wants to be a school teacher.
Marcel, from Germany, is only at Lexis for one week. However, his English is already really good because he studies at an international school. He is a keen skateboarder and brought his long board to Byron Bay to help him get around.
Finally, Yuki arrived late last night from Japan. It’s his first time in Australia, first time surfing and first time at English school! Even though he understands little, so far he is always smiling and seems to be having a good time.
We really hope you all enjoy your stay at Lexis English. Welcome!
Vicente, Omar and Jacapo in the Gold Coast with other Lexis students: Alvaro, Raphael, Livia, Marco, Simone and Jose.
Vicente, Omar and Jacopo met when they started at Lexis on the same day nearly four weeks ago. From that time on, they have been inseparable and have certainly made the most of their time in Australia by joining our surfing program (Vicente) visiting the Gold Coast and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (all of them), going scuba diving (all of them) and visiting Sydney (Omar) as well as taking part in many school activities.
Today, I asked them a few questions about what they have enjoyed most about their holidays.
Vicente Plaza Rincorn ( 16 – Spain)
“Last year, I was in Lexis Noosa and so this year I decided to try another Lexis school. I decided on Byron because in pictures it looks amazing and because of the surfing too. My surfing has really improved during my time here. We surfed at a number of different beaches including Main Beach and Lennox Head. For me, Main Beach had the best waves. I liked my classes because they are different from studying in Spain, where you are taught in Spanish. There’s a lot more speaking and listening practice, which I enjoy more than grammar. On my first day in homestay I felt unsure because I didn’t know anyone or anything, but soon I discovered that they were nice, friendly people who would help me with anything. The best things about coming to Byron Bay, for me, were the scuba diving, which I really enjoyed and the friends that I’ve made.”
Omar enjoying a Friday game of soccer (pictured with Miguel from Brazil)
Omar Cisse Ochoa (17 – Spain)
“I wanted to come to Byron Bay because I’d heard it was small and relaxed and difficult to get lost. I liked my classes because normally studying English is boring for me but this was better. My homestay family were really lovely and had a very playful and friendly young son called Jack.I enjoyed all my excursions, even though Sydney was very short. My only regret is that the nightclubs looked so good but we were too young to get into them.”
Jacapo took second place in the Lexis Byron Bay fiercely fought Ping Pong Tournament
Jacapo Saccocci (16 – Italy)
“I chose Byron Bay because it was small and had beautiful beaches. I wasn’t disappointed. At Lexis, I had a good teacher and my homestay family were great and helped me whenever I had any problems or questions. I enjoyed all activities but, for me, scuba-diving was the best thing. It was a really good experience and one that I couldn’t have in my country.”
Everyone at Lexis loves 24 year old Pablo Macineira Lopez from Spain, because he is not only a great student but an incredibly sociable guy (and a “great” singer – check out the video below). He’s currently on a break between his degree (Physical Education) and his Masters (Teaching) and will stay in Byron Bay for 7 weeks before heading to Lexis Noosa to do the Cambridge Advanced Certificate.
He told me today that he has wanted to come to Byron Bay since he saw photos of the lighthouse when he was 15 and that he’s really enjoying his time here, not least because he’s an extremely passionate surfer.
Tell me about your surfing
Football used to be my passion and surfing was my hobby. Unfortunately, when I was 16 I injured my ankle and my dreams of being a professional football player were over. That’s when surfing took over. I’ve recently been working as a surf instructor in Spain and I would like, in the future, to work as a surf coach, helping top surfers to improve their performance.
In Byron Bay, I really like surfing at Tallows Beach; that’s where the best waves are. I try to go every morning and I’ve just bought a new wetsuit so that I can keep this up throughout winter. There’s a great surfing community here and I’ve met surfers from all over the world.
Apart from the surfing, what else do you love in Byron Bay?
Really just walking around; people watching in the streets and in front of main beach or walking in beautiful natural surrounds on the beach and in the surrounding bushland.
And what’s the best thing about studying at Lexis English?
The English Only Policy. I love the total immersion. In Spain we are taught English in Spanish, but here we are taught in English and then we also use English during the breaks and activities. It’s a really good way to learn. Plus, the classes are really interesting and interactive. We are not just sitting down studying but moving around, doing different activities, having discussions etc. The time goes really fast.
Finally, what have you learned in your time at Lexis Byron Bay
Life goes so fast so you have to make the most of it. Don’t look back – always look forward.
16 year old French students Ulysse and Greg have come to the end of their five week stay in Byron Bay – where they studied English, surfed and explored our stunning coastal town.
Here are the boys pulling some dashing faces on their surf lesson 🙂
We spoke to them about their time here at Lexis English | Byron Bay!
Gregoire:
I really like my homestay. They cook very well and their child Jack, who is 7, is a very nice boy. They are very welcoming. They also had a Japanese student staying with them and he was cool. There is always a friendly atmosphere at dinner!
If I had to describe Byron Bay to another student, I would say that in the winter the weather is very good, and it is a very good spot to surf – there are great waves. The people are very friendly, especially at Lexis!
I enjoyed my lessons – Paul is a very good teacher. It is my second time in Australia – I also studied at Lexis Noosa – Lexis is a good school.
My surfing definitely progressed while I was here – I got better at surfing the face of the wave. I also bought a $400 wetsuit! The surf instructors are really good.
Thanks Greg! We won’t tell your Dad about the $400 wetsuit….
Ulysse:
Yesterday I went to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, on the Gold Coast – I saw so many crocodiles and got to hold a koala!
My homestay was really good – Georgia, my homestay Mum, was such a nice, helpful and funny person. The food was great, too.
I also really liked my teachers – when I first arrived I found it difficult to understand, but whenever you don’t understand, they stop and explain. Paul is a very good teacher. The English Only policy is good too, as it makes me speak English and speak to other students.
If I had to recommend what to do in Byron Bay to a new student, I would tell them to walk into town for the atmosphere, and to see the hippies! And also definitely go surfing – there are amazing waves.
My surfing has improved – I’ve been surfing on short boards rather than the foam boards that you use when you first start learning. Mojo are a really good surf school!
Thanks Ulysse and Greg! We hope that you come back to visit us, as well as the koalas, the hippies and the waves; some day!
Today we had a very sad graduation ceremony! Micha is leaving after four weeks of studying here – he will be here for an extra week so be prepared to party with him before he goes! He praised the teachers for their enthusiasm, dedication and sense of fun; and also spoke about how much he enjoyed staying in the student house.
And – after six months at Lexis | Byron Bay – Fabiana is leaving us! Fabiana has been the life and soul of Lexis since she has been here – she has been such a vivacious, chatty and uplifting character to have around! We will all really miss her! She will head to Fiji, before returning to travel some of Australia in a van and then going to Bali! She is hoping to also travel South East Asia, Sri Lanka and South Africa before returning home to Brazil. What an adventure! It was an emotional speech from Fabiana, who told us that teacher Julia holds a special place in her heart similar to that of her first ever teacher! She made a beautiful speech and we all blubbed like babies.
Good luck Micha and Fabiana!!
15 year olds Ulysse and Gregoire are here on our Teen Activity Programme, studying English for 3 hours in the morning and surfing all afternoon. They are both already competent surfers, having met on a surfing holiday in the south of France earlier this year. Gregoire has actually studied at Lexis before. He was at Noosa for four weeks in 2013 and had such a great time that, this time, he’s staying in Byron for five weeks.
Welcome guys. We hope you all have a wonderful time here in Byron Bay.
