The Lighthouse walk is a must. Get up early to see the sunrise or take a picnic and watch the sunset! The Lighthouse sits on Australia’s most easterly point and the views are amazing! Body Boarding! October 3rd

Last Thursday, our awesome students gathered in front of the school to all head down together to the beach for an afternoon of Body Boarding.

It was a quick walk along Byron Bay’s main street to the Lets Go Surfing shop.

When we arrived, we met the awesome team and had a crash course in the basics of body boarding. We were each given a board and a wet suit if wanted one.

Now it was time to hit the waves..

As soon as we arrived at main beach we spotted a pod of whales <3 This time of the year the whales are migrating with their new born calves. It is very common to spot them breaching and splashing not far from the shore. No matter how many times you see them, it is always magical!

IMG_6765

We decided to take our boards out in between the flags, as this is the safest area to swim because it is always patrolled by lifeguards.

It was a great afternoon, thanks to our friends at Lets Go Surfing for providing the equipment! 😀

Morning Surf Lesson! January 9th

img_0199.jpg

This morning we all set off at 10am for our first surf lesson of 2019! 😀

The class booked out quickly, with only 8 available spaces per lesson (so make sure to book early next time to avoid missing out!). The small numbers mean that lots of expert help is available for everyone from our pro instructor, Blake, from Lets Go Surfing.

img_0193.jpg

Everyone got sorted with their wet suits, boards and sun cream (don’t be fooled by the clouds, it was very, very hot out there!!). Two of our group had tried surfing before but to everyone else, it was a first time experience. Blake took them through all the safety info first, followed by his many surf tips.

Everyone ready to go 🙂

The sea was pretty rough today but everyone seemed to catch waves pretty quickly, with Silas standing up on his board almost immediately!

Nice one, Silas! 🙂

English + Surfing with Dominique and Manuel!

domman

Dominique and Manuel are from Switzerland and spent four weeks with us here at Lexis Byron Bay. They enrolled in the English in Action – Surfing course for two weeks, followed by another two weeks of General English.

img_4906

Manuel has always dreamed of visiting Australia. He also loves to surf, having done a surf camp in Portugal, and he enjoys the hippy culture and lifestyle. Byron Bay was the obvious choice for him to visit! Dominique was interested in spending some time overseas to practice his English, and thought that Manuel’s plan sounded pretty good, so came along with him!

img_0298

For both of them, their favourite things about Byron Bay includes the lovely, friendly, polite people, although Manuel said they can be a bit too relaxed at times (for example, when they are making your to-go coffee and it takes a good ten minutes!). Dominique also enjoyed the Lighthouse and being able to watch the whales swim past in the ocean, while Manuel loved the beaches, the lifestyle and the positive attitudes of everyone he met.

int-class-market-visit

Dominique and Manuel felt that they absolutely made improvements to their English skills while they studied here at Lexis Byron Bay. Their teachers were very, very good and were friendly and helpful at all times. They found that the teaching style here is quite different to what they have experienced in Switzerland, which was very helpful in learning new English concepts.

img_4295

In addition to improving their English, they also improved their surfing! For Dominique, it was his first time ever to try surfing. Manuel, on the other hand, had tried surfing before at a surf camp in Portugal. Compared to that experience, the lessons he had here with the team at Let’s Go Surfing Byron Bay  were outstanding. The classes were much smaller here, allowing a more personal and attentive method of coaching. Their instructors were great teachers, very motivated and clearly love what they do, which all came together to make a positive and fun surfing experience!

Overall, Dominique and Manuel would definitely recommend the English in Action – Surfing course to anyone considering studying English and learning to surf in Australia!

dominique

After completing their studies at Lexis Byron Bay last week, they were flying straight back to Switzerland the day after their graduation. They would have liked to stay in Australia for a longer period of time, but unfortunately had to be back at work this week. Manuel plans to continue his English studies and will be completing the Cambridge CAE course next year in Switzerland, and is hoping to study Law at university, which is a bilingual course. He also hopes to return to Byron Bay in the next few years!

manuel

We truly enjoyed having you both here at Lexis Byron Bay and hope to see you back in Australia again one day! All the best for whatever your futures hold 🙂

English+Surfing with Alessa!

alessa

Alessa is from Switzerland and studied at Lexis Byron Bay for two weeks on the English in Action – Surfing course. During those two weeks she studied English in the mornings and learnt to surf in the afternoons.

Her first visit to Australia was in January of this year, when she spent a month travelling with her family. She loved the country and the people so much that she had to come back!

She arrived in Australia with an Intermediate level of English and, although her time at Lexis Byron Bay was short, she feels has learnt more and improved her English language skills.

img_0157

Alessa (back row, on the right) with the other new students on her first day at Lexis Byron Bay

Alessa had never surfed before, so was quite nervous for her first lesson! Over the two weeks she had eight lessons with the team at Lets Go Surfing Byron Bay who taught her the basics of surfing and helped her to improve. By the end of the eight lessons, she was feeling very good in her ability to surf and hopes to keep surfing when she returns to Europe.

One of Alessa’s favourite things about Byron Bay was the people. In particular, she enjoyed meeting all the people at Lexis Byron Bay and the friends she has made from all  over the world.

img_0166

Alessa (second from right) enjoyed the Coffee Lounge conversation activity with other Lexis Byron Bay students

Alessa said she would definitely recommend the English in Action – Surfing course to anyone thinking of studying English and learning to surf in Byron Bay. She said the team at Lets Go Surfing Byron Bay  are really nice, very motivated, always have a smile and make the lessons really fun!

alessa-2

Now Alessa is enjoying two months of travelling around Australia. After Byron Bay she is off to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and then Perth before  flying back to Switzerland.  We hope she has a great time travelling around the country and continues to practice both her English and her surfing!

Four students joined the morning class with instructor Johnny, and twelve students joined the afternoon class with instructors Blake and James.

They first learnt the basics of surfing on the beach before heading into the water to put these skills into action.

The conditions were perfect both in the water and out, and it was a great day for beginners to learn how to surf. After falling off a few times, getting some more tips from the instructors and refining their skills a few more times, the students all caught some waves and had a lot of fun learning to surf!

October Activity Calendar!

october-activity-calendar

Next week is the start of OCTOBER and we have an exciting month of activities planned in the mornings and afternoons especially for our Lexis students!

Every Monday you can stretch out and relax doing Yoga with Stef in the garden from 11-12 and with Fee in Room 8 from 2:15 to 3:15. Don’t forget that the 3rd of October is a Public Holiday, so there will be no school next Monday!

On Tuesdays we have Coffee Lounge, which gives our students the opportunity to practice their English and get to know each other while enjoying great coffee and yummy TimTams!

On Wednesdays we will start the month with a Table Tennis Tournament to find this month’s Lexis Champion. I have noticed a lot of students using the new table, practicing for the next tournament so there is sure to be some good competition! The following week we have Flavio coming by at 11am to teach us how to Skateboard and Chloe will be here at 2pm to run a Mindfulness meditation for our students. Later in the month we are getting into the kitchen to do some Thai Cooking, exploring the delicious flavours of Thailand while making a traditional Green Curry. Then to finish off the month we have Pizza and Pictionary in the morning, which will be a fun way to learn some new English words and phrases, and in the afternoon we can get creative while learning about Aboriginal Australian culture at Boomerang Painting.

Every second Thursday we have the very popular 1-hour Surf Lesson with the team at Lets Go Surfing. These lessons are only $20 and are a great way to give surfing a try before booking more lessons to help you become a real Byron Surfer!  Alternating with this, we have Job Club for those students looking for work in Byron Bay and wanting extra help with writing their resume, preparing for interviews and applying for jobs.

On Fridays we will celebrate the first week of the course book next week with a Start of Course BBQ in the front garden, both in the morning and afternoon. For the rest of the month we are getting active, with Volleyball and Soccer on different days (in the garden for the morning session and at the beach for the afternoon), and a morning session of Slacklining in the garden with Olmo and a Bike Ride to Tallows Beach in the afternoon.

GIL (Guided Individual Learning) runs every day from 12-1pm and 2-3pm in Room 8. Come along to get help with anything from homework to vocabulary to writing your resume.

We will also continue to enjoy our Student Nights at Cheeky Monkeys every Tuesday night – meet at BWT @ 8pm first to get your drinks, food and fun!

Don’t forget that you can book your 3-hour surf lessons with us anytime at Reception for just $50!

Have a great month!🙂

Surf Lesson! September 16

It is a beautiful day in Byron Bay and we are making the most of it here at Lexis Byron Bat! This morning eight students and myself headed down to The Wreck for a surf lesson with the team at Let’s Go Surfing!

img_4700

We had two awesome instructors, Blake and Johnny, teaching us how to surf. We were split into two groups – five who had never surfed before, and four of us who had done it once or twice in the past.

After getting kitted out with our wetsuits and surfboards, we first learnt a few of the basic skills about surfing while still on the beach. We learnt not only how to paddle and stand up on the board, but also about how to spot the best part of the beach to surf at and identifying rips.

img_4706

The surf was a little rough but still small enough for us as beginners to feel confident in the water. We each caught wave after wave, putting what we had learnt on the beach into practice and eventually standing up!

img_4710

A few of the students seemed to be naturals at surfing, and were standing up and riding the waves in no time at all. During just one hour in the water, they were able to keep improving and refining their skills to become more confident with their surfing.

Everyone managed to stand up at least once or twice by the end of the lesson and there was a smile on every student’s face the whole time!

Surf Lesson! September 8

This afternoon 14 of our Lexis students headed out into the ocean for the 1-hour Surf Lesson with the awesome team at Let’s Go Surfing!

img_4645

For almost the whole group, this was their first time on a surfboard so they were very excited to be able to learn in such a great location as Byron Bay. After getting kitted out with their wetsuits and surfboards, they headed down to the beach at The Wreck, learnt the basics of surfing and then were straight into the water. Everyone managed to stand up (with a few spectacular falls on the way!) and had a lot of fun learning this great Aussie past-time.

Thanks to Blake and Johnny, the instructors for the lesson today!

Surf Lesson! August 8

Last week, on Wednesday, we had our 1-hour Surf Lesson. After getting our wetsuits on, carrying the surfboards, walking down to the beach and being taught a few of the basics on the sand, there came a rumble of thunder and crack of lightning over the ocean! The storm was forecast to pass right over Byron Bay, so unfortunately it was not safe to continue our lesson. Not to be put off by this, we rescheduled our lesson for the next week and we went along to learn to surf yesterday afternoon!

IMG_4293

The weather was looking nice and the surf conditions good, so we quickly put on our wetsuits, grabbed the surfboards and walked down to the beach to begin our lesson. Our instructor Katie recapped the basic skills we had learnt last week but not been able to put into practice yet, and we were soon in the water to test them out!

IMG_4298

We caught a few waves to get the feel of being out in the surf, then returned to the sand to learn to most important part – how to stand up. Katie gave us some excellent advice on how to do this, then we were back in the water to try it ourselves.

IMG_4300

The first few times, while still getting used to the feel of being on the surfboard and trying to remember everything we had been taught, resulted in falling off the board almost as soon as getting to our feet! But with a bit more practice and the ongoing support of our instructor, each and every one of us managed to get to our feet and stay standing on the board to ride some small waves.

IMG_4301

It was a lot of fun and all of us are keen to get back out there as soon as possible! Thanks to our wonderful instructor Katie from the team at Let’s Go Surfing for teaching us how to surf!

English + Surfing with Gaspard!

At Lexis Byron Bay we have a range of courses available for students wanting to improve their English skills in Australia. A lot of students choose to come to Byron Bay for the beachside lifestyle and to learn how to surf. Why not combine all of this and do the English in Action – Surfing course in Byron Bay?

IMG_4084

Gaspard is from France and is graduating this week after completing the English in Action – Surfing course. Gaspard lives in the surfing town of Biarritz, France, so he was already a good surfer when he arrived in Australia. He chose to come to Australia to learn English because he has never been here before and has had friends tell him how beautiful the country is. He had also heard that Australia is one of the best places to surf. After almost four weeks in Byron Bay, Gaspard says his favourite thing is that there are always waves to surf and friends to surf with.

Gaspard 11

Gaspard feels that his English has improved and his classes have been good during his time at Lexis. His surfing has also improved a lot during his time in Australia. He says the team at Lets Go Surfing! are all very friendly and are great surfers, and did an excellent job helping him to improve his surf skills.

IMG_3848

Gaspard would recommend the English in Action – Surfing course to anyone interested in improving their English and their surfing. He believes it makes it more interesting and fun to study English in the mornings and spend the afternoons surfing.

Gaspard 6

After graduating from Lexis Byron Bay this week, Gaspard is looking forward to returning to France to show off his new surfing skills to his friends!

Surfing! June 15

Today three excited students, Saki, Naoko and Younes, took advantage of the 1-hour surf lesson with Katy at Lets Go Surfing.

ALL of the students were able to stand up on their boards in just one lesson (wow!) and had a lot of fun doing it!

Surfing Lesson! April 20

Today’s activity was a 1-hour surf lesson with Blake at Lets Go Surfing! Seven Lexis students  – Natalia, Vera, Jeannine, Marco, Yuki, David and Cyril  – took advantage of this awesome deal and were kitted out with rashies and surfboards.
