Dreamcatcher Making! 12 December

On Wednesday we had a delightful morning and afternoon making dreamcatchers!

IMG_9540

I demonstrated first how to make the netting and then assisted the students to do their own (with some needing more assistance than others!)

Using our box of materials, beads, shells and feathers we then decorated our dreamcatchers, with some beautiful results!

Carlos showed us just one of the many things they can now do with their dreamcatcher…

Previously students have given them as a gift (often to their homestay families!), hung them in their vans before going off traveling, decorated their bags with them, and taken them home as a souvenir of their time in Byron! Or they can use them for their original purpose and simply hang them in their rooms to protect them from bad dreams!

Morning Dreamcatcher Making! 12 December

On Wednesday we made everyone’s favourite – Dreamcatchers!

We started off with a wire ring, which we had to wrap, using various bits and pieces from our large box of materials, threads, wools and twine.

The next step then was to make the web part of the dreamcatcher. We watched a video and then I showed them in more detail, how to go about making their own. It looks a bit tricky but is surprisingly easy once you get into it. It is also very therapeutic! 🙂

Then it was time to add some embellishments to our webs. We had lots of beautiful bits and bobs – like feathers, beads, shells…

I was very impressed with the final results!

Native Speaker – Adrienne’s Options Class

Teacher Adrienne is famed for making all her lessons fun and interesting, and her feedback comments very often include both these words, along with ‘she really cares’ and ‘she has helped me so much’. Her students love her enthusiasm and passion for teaching and we love finding out what they’ve been up to in class…

For one of Adrienne’s recent Native Speaker options classes, which teaches phrasal verbs, idioms and slang, the focus was on ‘getting directions’.

In pairs the students had to take it in turns to give each other directions. To make it more fun and challenging the person getting directions was blindfolded and an obstacle course was created!! Using equipment they found downstairs, including a trolley, exercise ball and hula hoop, the students got creative directing each other around the garden.

The hour lesson was filled with lots of laughter, making it a memorable way for the students to remember the new vocabulary and phrases they had learnt!

Anselmo is from Italy. His passions include cooking, drawing and listening to music. In his summer vacations he enjoys going sailing. His mum and dad are both architects and design furniture, and he has worked in their office for the past 2 years. There are many reasons why he chose Australia for his studies and he is very happy to be here for the next 17 weeks!

Maria is from Chile. She loves hiking, going to the beach, traveling and meeting new people. Jack is from Belgium. His hobbies are sports and traveling. He wants to study International Business and Management, which is taught in English, so first he will join us for 15 weeks to improve his level. He chose Australia for his studies because it is far from his country and a good growing experience for him.

Tomas is from Spain. He loves all types of sports, particularly skiing, surfing, paddling and sailing. His other passion is traveling, and that’s what brings him to the other side of the world to learn English! In his short time in Australia he says it has already made a big impression on him and he is very excited to be here!

Maria is from Spain. She loves swimming, listening to music and writing. She studied Dentistry at university and then a Masters in oral surgery.
