Job Hunting Tips from our Lexis Students!

job-search

We recently spoke with six of our students here at Lexis Byron Bay, to ask them a few questions about their part-time jobs. We found out where they work, what they like about their jobs and working in Byron and also, what their dream jobs would be…

Arriving in a new place, meeting new people, starting school as well as having to find a job can be difficult! Thanks to these students, we have some tips for our current and future students, to help with the headache of finding a job. Thanks to Judith, Leo, Ania, Maria, Pedro and Lucas for the tips and positive vibes! 😉

WAS IT HARD TO FIND YOUR JOB AND WHAT DID YOU DO TO GET IT?

  • No, it wasn’t too hard! Byron is small but you have lots of options for work. Everybody always finds a job! It really helps to be positive and focused.
  • It wasn’t too easy! I spent many weeks searching and bringing my CV to every store and restaurant.
  • When I arrived in Byron it was tricky to find a job as it was Winter season here, so a bit quiet, but I didn’t give up! I went to many places and gave in my CV and after a few weeks, got my job!
  • No, it wasn’t hard to find a job! My friend told me she was leaving her job at Orgasmic Falafel and asked if I would like to take over. This was the same for another job a few months ago, my friend was leaving his position at an Italian restaurant in town. I also got some cleaning work at my accommodation after suggesting some ways to make the public spaces better and cleaner for everyone. As I am a long term student here, I was also approached about some cleaning work here in Lexis.
  • I found a job on my first week in Byron! I recommend making a CV that is very personal to you – what do you know? What experience do you have? What are your strong points?
  • It took me about 15 days to find my job. I went around to all shops, bars and restaurants asking for the manager and handing them my CV personally.

dream-job

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER STUDENTS LOOKING FOR WORK?

  • Be patient! It will all work out ok!
  • If you put in the effort and are persistent, you will find your job! Ask to speak with the manager where possible.
  • Keep in touch with people and tell everyone you are looking for a job. There are so many people coming and going so you can take their jobs as they leave.
  • Never give up! and try speak with the manager.
  • Make your CV interesting and personal to you. Show them why they should hire YOU! 😀

group photo

Simon is from the German speaking part of Switzerland. In his free time he enjoys playing Floorball. This is a game you play in a sports hall, with a small white ball  and a plastic stick. Simon is an apprentice house drawer and he will continue to study architecture when he returns home. He has chosen to study in Byron Bay as he likes the relaxed nature of the small town. After studying at Lexis, Simon, is going to travel the East Coast and continue to explore Australia.

Tommaso is from Italy. He has played guitar since he was young and started to play piano last year. Music plays a fundamental role in Tommaso’s life. In his spare time he also likes boxing, hiking and surfing. He finished high school last year and is now studying at University. He is in Australia to improve his English because he will need it for future employment.

Jvana is from a small town in the mountains of Switzerland. In her spare time Jvana likes to play football and all types of sports. In winter she enjoys, skiing, ice skating and boarding. She is excited to be in Australia to explore the country and improve her English.

Sagiri is from Japan. She has played the piano since she was three years old. She loves listening to music and going to live music concerts. Sagiri is very happy to be in Byron Bay, as she loves the sea and she thinks the town is very beautiful. While she is in Australia she wants to go to Uluru and also hug a koala.

Masato is from Japan. His hobbies include growing vegetables, making sweets, doing ‘Aikido’ and yoga. He is interested in agriculture. He would like to become a farmer in the future, he currently works as an insurance broker. He hopes to make a lot of friends from all over the world.

Nino is from Brazil. In his spare time he enjoys gaming and comics. He worked in civil construction for the past 20 years, so he has not been in a class room for a long time! He decided to study in Australia because of the beautiful landscape and the opportunity to work. He is hoping to improve his English on this trip and return to his country with a better understanding of the language.

Hiroshima Juniors Day at Emmanuel Anglican College – March 25th

thumbnail_IMG_5885

Arriving at the school!

On Monday morning, we left Lexis Byron Bay campus and headed, by bus, to Emmanuel Anglican College in Ballina. We all gathered in their school library and were greeted by staff and students in both English and Japanese! Each student was paired with a ‘buddy‘ – a student who would take them to their classes and look after them throughout the day.

After our welcome, each student was given a tour of the beautiful school grounds by their buddy, before joining them for their morning classes, which included Maths and Science.

Enjoying some chats with their buddies during the morning break.

Enjoying a fun game of Handball during break time!

thumbnail_IMG_5893

After break, I joined some of the students in English class, where the teacher was explaining how to structure an essay.

From 12pm, we joined the Japanese classes! This was lots of fun and each group of students (Year 8 and 10) greeted our Hiroshima Juniors in Japanese, while our Juniors greeted them back in English. Everyone had a little chat to get to know eachother better.

During these classes, our Hiroshima Juniors gave a brief presentation to groups of students, introducing them to their home-place, Hiroshima.

Some Japanese-themed decorations in the Japanese room.

Activities in these classes included ‘Kahoot’ – an interactive learning game to help with language skills, listening tests and finally, a ‘speed chat’ – where each of our students had 5 minutes to chat with a student in English, before moving on to the next student when time was up.

At 3pm it was time to leave and we all met at the front of the school, where everyone had the chance to say goodbye to their buddies. Thanks for having us, Emmanuel Anglican College! 🙂

Hiroshima Juniors Surf Lesson! March 22nd

cover.JPG

Today we hit Main Beach in Byron for a very special surf lesson for our Hiroshima Juniors! The lovely Blake from Let’s Go Surfing picked us up outside the school at 9am and we headed to their shop to get fitted with wet-suits and surfboards.

Here are the guys, all ready to hit the beach!

IMG_2525

It was super hot by the time we hit the beach so the first thing everybody did was jump into the sea to cool down

The next thing we did – stretching! Very important before hitting the waves.
