Job Hunting Tips from our Lexis Students!

job-search

We recently spoke with six of our students here at Lexis Byron Bay, to ask them a few questions about their part-time jobs. We found out where they work, what they like about their jobs and working in Byron and also, what their dream jobs would be…

Arriving in a new place, meeting new people, starting school as well as having to find a job can be difficult! Thanks to these students, we have some tips for our current and future students, to help with the headache of finding a job. Thanks to Judith, Leo, Ania, Maria, Pedro and Lucas for the tips and positive vibes! ๐Ÿ˜‰

WAS IT HARD TO FIND YOUR JOB AND WHAT DID YOU DO TO GET IT?

  • No, it wasn’t too hard! Byron is small but you have lots of options for work. Everybody always finds a job! It really helps to be positive and focused.
  • It wasn’t too easy! I spent many weeks searching and bringing my CV to every store and restaurant.
  • When I arrived in Byron it was tricky to find a job as it was Winter season here, so a bit quiet, but I didn’t give up! I went to many places and gave in my CV and after a few weeks, got my job!
  • No, it wasn’t hard to find a job! My friend told me she was leaving her job at Orgasmic Falafel and asked if I would like to take over. This was the same for another job a few months ago, my friend was leaving his position at an Italian restaurant in town. I also got some cleaning work at my accommodation after suggesting some ways to make the public spaces better and cleaner for everyone. As I am a long term student here, I was also approached about some cleaning work here in Lexis.
  • I found a job on my first week in Byron! I recommend making a CV that is very personal to you – what do you know? What experience do you have? What are your strong points?
  • It took me about 15 days to find my job. I went around to all shops, bars and restaurants asking for the manager and handing them my CV personally.

dream-job

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER STUDENTS LOOKING FOR WORK?

  • Be patient! It will all work out ok!
  • If you put in the effort and are persistent, you will find your job! Ask to speak with the manager where possible.
  • Keep in touch with people and tell everyone you are looking for a job. There are so many people coming and going so you can take their jobs as they leave.
  • Never give up! and try speak with the manager.
  • Make your CV interesting and personal to you.ย Show them why they should hire YOU! ๐Ÿ˜€

Hiroshima Juniors Surf Lesson @ The Wreck, Byron Bay – March 28

Header

This morning we hit the beach for our second surf lesson! It was a different kind of day – not as sunny, but the clouds and light were beautiful on the beach.

Some of the students returned to do a surf lesson, while the rest were happy to swim, walk the beach and pick interesting rocks and shells ๐Ÿ™‚

IMG_2842

Wet-suits ready to go!

Blake from Lets Go Surfing picked us up promptly at 9am, dropping us to their shop by the beach. Once everyone got fitted with their boards and wet-suits, we were ready to hit the waves!

IMG_2847

On our way to the beach

Everyone had a quick dip in the sea to cool down before the lesson.

We had the lovely Amy as our instructor today and she went through all the important points, tips and safety instructions before they were ready to hit the waves.

While they were preparing for surf, the others went for another dip!

Ready for the waves!!!

We were later joined by Lexis students Nico and Anselmo!

Today we had the very fun and creative activity of Boomerang painting! Our Hiroshima Juniors joined withย  their classmates and together, we all painted our own individual boomerang.

Everyone ready to start! ๐Ÿ™‚

I had some painted boomerangs to show as examples, as well as some information about the meaning behind all the symbols โ€“ an interesting insight into the traditional Aboriginal style, used to tell stories through the artists paintings.

Hiroshima Juniors Day at Emmanuel Anglican College – March 25th

thumbnail_IMG_5885

Arriving at the school!

On Monday morning, we left Lexis Byron Bay campus and headed, by bus, to Emmanuel Anglican College in Ballina. We all gathered in their school library and were greeted by staff and students in both English and Japanese! Each student was paired with a ‘buddy‘ – a student who would take them to their classes and look after them throughout the day.

After our welcome, each student was given a tour of the beautiful school grounds by their buddy, before joining them for their morning classes, which included Maths and Science.

Enjoying some chats with their buddies during the morning break.

Enjoying a fun game of Handball during break time!

thumbnail_IMG_5893

After break, I joined some of the students in English class, where the teacher was explaining how to structure an essay.

From 12pm, we joined the Japanese classes! This was lots of fun and each group of students (Year 8 and 10) greeted our Hiroshima Juniors in Japanese, while our Juniors greeted them back in English. Everyone had a little chat to get to know eachother better.

During these classes, our Hiroshima Juniors gave a brief presentation to groups of students, introducing them to their home-place, Hiroshima.

Some Japanese-themed decorations in the Japanese room.

Activities in these classes included ‘Kahoot’ – an interactive learning game to help with language skills, listening tests and finally, a ‘speed chat’ – where each of our students had 5 minutes to chat with a student in English, before moving on to the next student when time was up.

At 3pm it was time to leave and we all met at the front of the school, where everyone had the chance to say goodbye to their buddies. Thanks for having us, Emmanuel Anglican College! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hiroshima Juniors Coffee Club! March 20th

img_2387.jpg

Yesterday, we held coffee club in the morning especially for our Hiroshima Juniors group! We all met outside the student lounge downstairs at 9.00am and enjoyed some delicious coffees and TimTams ๐Ÿ™‚

Learning how to say ‘cheers’ ๐Ÿ˜€

IMG_2379

We all chatted together and got to know each other a little better. We spoke about where we are from and what it is like there. I learned that Hiroshima is great for oysters and lemon trees, with lemon cake being a favourite way to use the lemons!

I learned about everyone’s school life and what they like/don’t like in school. Everyone has different hobbies, interests and aspirations, which is very interesting to chat about together. Some students are sporty, playing tennis (with a hard ball, something I just learned about yesterday!) and football, while others are musical and enjoy piano and trombone!

IMG_2376

We were so engrossed in our chats and getting to know eachother that we forgot to play any of our games! Next week, we will! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Until next time…

Lexis Juniors Walking Tour of Byron! March 18th

Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming eight junior students from Hiroshima, Japan. Once they were all settled in to Lexis, I took them on a little walking tour of Byron, to introduce them to their new surroundings and home for the next two weeks. ๐Ÿ˜€

1

We set off from Lexis on Ruskin Street and walked down Jonson Street, towards the sea, stopping on the way for some delicious ice cream!

3

Enjoying their ice-cream at Main Beach

17

Everyone enjoyed walking along the water’s edge and taking some photos. The clouds in the sky looked spectacular before the rain came and we could see the light house in the distance!

Time to walk back to town before the rain hits!

20

Luckily, when the rain came, we were under cover and watched as the brief but impressive thunder storm passed us by.

Before long, the sun was out again!

An afternoon of Bodyboarding! 14 March

Yesterday we headed down to the beach for some Bodyboarding!

Summer is still here and it was beautifully warm in and out of the water ๐Ÿ™‚

We collected the boards from the wonderful team at Let’s Go Surfing, then I gave the students a quick demonstration on the beach before they headed into waves!

The waves were pretty small but they all managed to catch a few and had lots of fun, which is the important thing!

Crepe Competition! 13 March

On Wednesday we had morning and afternoon Crepe Competitions!

We worked in two groups to follow the below simple crepe recipe:

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups plain flour
  • A few pinches of salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 cups of milk

METHOD

  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Blend until smooth. Add a little water and mix to desired consistency. Cover and set aside to rest for 5 minutes.
  • Heat a medium non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Spray with cooking oil. Using 1/4 cup mixture per pancake, pour batter over pan, tilting from side to side so batter covers base in a thin film. Cook pancake for about 1 minute or until underside is golden, then use a spatula to flip. Cook other side for just under a minute until golden. Repeat with remaining mixture, spraying pan with cooking oil between pancakes.

Hongki impressed us all with his flipping skills, with Lisa and Laura also giving it a good go!

Once everyone had their own crepe, the competition started!

The students had strawberries, blueberries, bananas, honey, nutella, nuts and whipped cream at their disposal to help them create the winning crepe!

I couldn’t possibly try them all, so instead judged them on their appearance…

Talita and Busakorn took the win with their delicious looking creation, combining all the available ingredients!

And they’re off! ๐Ÿ˜€

We made sure to swim at the area where the lifeguards were on duty. Look out for the flag poles to keep away from any rips and stay safe! ๐Ÿ™‚

Keep an eye on the March Activity Calendarย for our upcoming activities – if you love water sports, you will see we are also doing a surf lesson at the end of the month! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sushi Making! March 6th

Sushi

On Wednesday last week we made Sushi!ย We all met in the kitchen at 11.30am.

Our sushi ingredients: Yaki Nori (seaweed sheets), sushi rice, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, caster sugar, bamboo rolling mat, mayonnaise, cling wrap, tuna, smoked salmon, cream cheese, carrots, avocado, cucumber and of course – pickled ginger and wasabi!ย

There is a lot of preparation involved in sushi-making so everyone had different jobs to do. The first thing was to get the rice cooking! We had special short grain ‘sushi rice’. Cooking rice can be difficult and we wanted it to be perfect so Jesse took charge, using his phone as a timer.

While the rice was cooking, everyone took to chopping and preparing the vegetables, cutting them into thin long strips, long enough to fit in a whole sushi roll.

The bamboo sushi mats had to be covered in cling film – this helps with making smooth rolls, so the rice doesn’t get stuck in the bamboo. It is also keeps the mats clean!
