It was another round of Aussie Food Tasting this afternoon at Lexis Byron Bay. All students were eager to taste the Australian delicacies on hand!
Vegemite – Alice was the only one who didn’t mind the unusual taste that is a good ol’ Aussie staple but she cheated when it came to putting it on her toast😆.
Fairy bread – Something you will find at a children’s birthday party. Everyone loved it!
Party Pies – This was everyone’s favourite of the day. Nice, hot, and savoury…YUM!

I caught up with some of our students who are lucky enough to be on a working holiday visa, to ask them a few things about their working life here in Byron…

1. WHERE DO YOU WORK?
I work in Lexis English School as a cleaner and in Orgasmic Falafel restaurant as a waitress in the street offering falafels to people, as well as cleaning, preparing and helping to put away chairs, tables etc.
2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB AND WORKING IN BYRON BAY?
The flexible schedule in most Byron jobs and the work atmosphere. Byron is a relaxed place, of course there are some busy days with stress, but there is no comparison with most of the jobs in Spain and probably in Sydney or other big Australian cities. I also like that in Byron, there are a lot of jobs where you finish at 5pm and you have a whole evening free or if you work in a restaurant, you can enjoy the whole day and work in the afternoon/evening. In Spain, most of the jobs are ‘split-shift’ so it feels like you just work all day, then go home to sleep.
3. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB – AND WHERE?
My dream job is to work in a big company, analysing employees – analysing their worries, motivation, personal life and then try to create a better working environment for them, for example – maybe one employee will be more efficient and happy at work if the boss lets them finish 30 minutes earlier so that they can pick up their child from school. I would like a job that allows me to travel – a company who has offices all over the world, so that travelling is part of my job. I would love to have a flexible schedule – I could work really hard for a few weeks and then travel for one or two weeks at the end.

Yesterday was the last day in January and the last activity on our January Lexis calendar was jewellery making! We all met in the student lounge at 11.30am. I had a basket full of amazing craft supplies including a range of beads, shells, glass stones, wire, feathers, threads and various types of macrame cord.
I showed the group how to make a crystal wrap necklace, using a macrame knotting technique. For this, we each chose one stone, then used 3 long lengths of cord to begin our piece. We then make a little net to tightly hold the stone and braided the remaining pieces to hang around the neck. It is a relatively simple technique but takes time and precision.
Everyone was free to either follow what I was doing or use their imagination and create their own individual piece. To get them on their way, I showed them some examples and some tips and tricks for tying adjustable knots. We had necklaces, bracelets and ankle bracelets!
After the crystal net was formed, everyone had their own method for holding the necklace in place while they braided/plaited the remaining strings!
The finished pieces looked amazing! They were all so different – some people added beads and different knots to personalise their own.

Yesterday morning (Thursday) we gathered in the kitchen for our Mexican cooking activity! Our plan was to have a meat AND a veggie option – beef tacos and veggie enchiladas. Our main ingredients included beef, red peppers & onions, lettuce, mixed beans, re-fried beans, sour cream, various sauces, lime, cheese, taco shells, tortillas and of course – some corn chips and salsa to snack on as we cooked 😀
As we were cooking two separate mixes, there were plenty of jobs for everyone to do – prep and chop the vegetables, divide the ingredients for each meal, find the chopping boards, pots, pans and the fun bit – the cooking! 🙂
As the onion tears were starting to get to us, one of the group had a genius idea to help her… sunglasses!!! 😀

We went very retro here at Lexis for last Wednesday’s activity – tie dying!! 🙂
Everyone met promptly at 11.30am at the seating area outside the student lounge, by the garden. The first thing we did was cover all tables with layers of newspaper to avoid any staining. We then laid out the selection of white tops that we provided for anyone who did not have their own. There was a mix of styles (long sleeve, t shirt and vests). Some of the students even decided to customise a little and cut off the sleeves! Here we are, ready to go…
The inks had to be prepared so some of the students took charge of this, adding water to the colour mix as well as a pinch of salt to stop the colours from fading on the fabric.
We looked at different ways to knot our fabrics and chatted about different designs we could make, using tightly wrapped elastic bands to divide colours and give those white lines and creases. Some people opted for the rolling/twisting method, some wanted vertical stripes, some wanted horizontal stripes, we even had some galaxy inspired designs as well as some free style!
Once that was done – it was time for the ink! 🙂
Things started to look very interesting, colourful and even sculptural…
Once everything was inked up, we then had to place them in air-tight bags, to be left for 24 hours. This was the hardest part as we all reeeeeally wanted to see how they turned out!

Last Friday we had not one, but two, previous Lexis students return with gifts for our Lexis team!
Our remarkable Judit, who studied with us for 10 months and also did a outstanding job as our school cleaner, returned from a trip to Bali and bought myself, Lisa and Koko some beautiful soaps and organic coffee for all the staff.
Then the lovely Merce came to say a final farewell after 6 months in Byron. She finished our Cambridge First course last month and has just been travelling in Thailand. She brought us in a delicious cake to say thank you to all our Lexis staff <3
It’s always so wonderful to have past students pop by and especially to know how much they enjoyed Lexis and appreciated their time and the team here!

Next week is the start of OCTOBER and we have an exciting month of activities planned in the mornings and afternoons especially for our Lexis students!
Every Monday you can stretch out and relax doing Yoga with Stef in the garden from 11-12 and with Fee in Room 8 from 2:15 to 3:15. Don’t forget that the 3rd of October is a Public Holiday, so there will be no school next Monday!
On Tuesdays we have Coffee Lounge, which gives our students the opportunity to practice their English and get to know each other while enjoying great coffee and yummy TimTams!
On Wednesdays we will start the month with a Table Tennis Tournament to find this month’s Lexis Champion. I have noticed a lot of students using the new table, practicing for the next tournament so there is sure to be some good competition! The following week we have Flavio coming by at 11am to teach us how to Skateboard and Chloe will be here at 2pm to run a Mindfulness meditation for our students. Later in the month we are getting into the kitchen to do some Thai Cooking, exploring the delicious flavours of Thailand while making a traditional Green Curry. Then to finish off the month we have Pizza and Pictionary in the morning, which will be a fun way to learn some new English words and phrases, and in the afternoon we can get creative while learning about Aboriginal Australian culture at Boomerang Painting.
Every second Thursday we have the very popular 1-hour Surf Lesson with the team at Lets Go Surfing. These lessons are only $20 and are a great way to give surfing a try before booking more lessons to help you become a real Byron Surfer! Alternating with this, we have Job Club for those students looking for work in Byron Bay and wanting extra help with writing their resume, preparing for interviews and applying for jobs.
On Fridays we will celebrate the first week of the course book next week with a Start of CourseBBQ in the front garden, both in the morning and afternoon. For the rest of the month we are getting active, with Volleyball and Soccer on different days (in the garden for the morning session and at the beach for the afternoon), and a morning session of Slacklining in the garden with Olmo and a Bike Ride to Tallows Beach in the afternoon.
GIL (Guided Individual Learning) runs every day from 12-1pm and 2-3pm in Room 8. Come along to get help with anything from homework to vocabulary to writing your resume.
We will also continue to enjoy our Student Nights at Cheeky Monkeys every Tuesday night – meet at BWT @ 8pm first to get your drinks, food and fun!

Today we held two sessions of Coffee Lounge at Lexis Byron Bay.
At the morning session, we played a very exciting round of Lexis Jenga, building one of the biggest towers I have seen!
The students with the impressive tower shortly before it came tumbling down!
The students answered the questions on each brick they pulled from the tower and learnt many new words and phrases along the way, such as ‘advice‘, ‘regret‘, and ‘speedingticket‘.
As the tower grew taller and taller, each turn became more difficult. The tower wobbled and threatened to fall many times, and nobody wanted to be the one who made it fall!
Eventually, after almost reaching the limit of how tall a Jenga tower can grow, it came crashing down onto the table. The students celebrated with TimTams!

In the afternoon, we enjoyed the beautiful, sunny weather and sat out in the garden. The students chatted amongst themselves and as a group, learning about each other’s culture and their experiences in Australia. Having students from Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Brazil, Korea and Japan, there was a lot to share! We learnt that students in Korea study from 7am until 9pm, which shocked everyone at the table! We also discussed the different accents in Australia and other English-speaking countries, the difficulties with getting Student Visas for Australia, and showed the newcomers how to enjoy your coffee by drinking it with a TimTam straw!

Dominique is from Switzerland and has a younger sister called Sabrina. He likes to go mountain biking and also enjoys programming computers. He is working as an Electronics and Systems Engineer for an IT company. He came to Lexis Byron Bay to study English because the people of Australia are nice and easy-going.
Manuel is from Switzerland and Portugal – he has dual citizenship. He is an only child and his parents live in Porto, Portugal (where the famous wine is from!). He enjoys listening to music, experiencing local cultures and being in nature. He is currently doing an internship to become a salesman and will eventually be working for a large European paper trading company. He decided to study English in Australia because he is fascinated by the lifestyle and nature here. He also wants to learn how to surf in Byron Bay. In the future, he hopes to study Law at university and plans to do a lot of travelling to experience many different cultures.
Ai is from Japan. She is a hairdresser and likes playing sport. She came to Lexis Byron Bay because she wants to learn how to speak English. She hopes to make friends from all around the world!
Andi is from Switzerland and has been working for two years programming industrial machinery. His hobbies are riding motorcycles, snowboarding, skateboarding, building his VW bus and participating in his Youth Group. While here at Lexis Byron Bay, he hopes to improve both his English and his surf skills, meet the friendly people of Australia and see the interesting sites that the country has to offer.
Astrid is from Belgium and is staying in Australia for the next three months. She completed high school in June and is now taking a gap year to learn English, travel, experience different lifestyles and push the boundaries of her comfort zone. She also hopes to figure out what she wants to study at University next year; regardless of what course she chooses, she wants to study in English which is why she is here! She plans to study for two months at Lexis Byron Bay before travelling for another month in Australia, then to Bali, Asia and New Zealand.
Olli is from Germany and travelled to Australia with his wife, Katrin. He works for a power company in Germany and enjoys playing football, golf and tennis. He wants to study English so that he can communicate with others from all over the world when travelling. After studying at Lexis Byron Bay he is heading north to visit the Great Barrier Reef.
Katrin is from Germany and lives with her husband, Olli. She has a wonderful garden at their home, with a small pond and Koi fish. She enjoys reading and snowboarding. She works as an Economist for a Distribution Service Operator. Her sister lives in the town of Mullumbimby, near Byron Bay, which is why she came here. After studying at Lexis Byron Bay, she will visit Hamilton Island, Airlie Beach, Cairns and Daintree National Park.
Livia is from Brazil and has two brothers and a sister. She enjoys spending time with her friends. She studied Biology at university but has not worked in the area yet. After studying English at Lexis Byron Bay, she hopes to either find work in Australia in the field of Biology or perhaps study a course in Fashion and Design.
Pol is from Spain and studies Sport Science at Barcelona University. He plays Handball at a high level and trains for about five hours on the weekend for this. While studying, he has also been working at Nike in Barcelona for the past two years. He decided to come to Australia to study English because he believes it will help both his life and his career. He chose Lexis Byron Bay for his studies so that he could experience living in a small country town.
Nil is from Spain and has just completed high school. One of his favourite things to do is photography and hopes to one day take the kind of photos that are seen in magazines. He also likes watching films, reading and playing video games. He came to Australia to study English because he believes the language is important to know and wanted to travel far from home. He hopes to learn how to surf while in Byron Bay and in the future would like to study Informatic Science.

Emiko is from Japan and graduates from Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class. She started in Pre-Intermediate and, over the 24 weeks she has spent here at Lexis Byron Bay, has worked her way up to the Upper Intermediate class. She has been a dedicated and hard-working student, improving her English skills and gaining confidence in speaking both in class and out. Emiko has made great friends during her time here and will be missed by staff and students alike! She is now off to travel through Cambodia and Vietnam before returning home to Japan. When she gets home, she plans to work and save up to come back to Australia, to travel to Uluru, Cairns and Tasmania. We look forward to seeing you again in Australia some day Emiko!

Before getting onto the slackline, we warmed up the muscles we were about to use by doing some stretching and did some balance exercises to focus and calm our minds.
Then it was time to try to slackline! Olmo had a helping hand nearby and gave lots of great advice to help each student find their balance and walk along the slackline.
Everyone had fun trying to balance along the line and are looking forward to improving more at the next slacklining session!

This afternoon we had a Trivia quiz to test our knowledge in the categories of Science, Geography, Music and Sport.
The students were faced with questions such as “In which sport would you use a ‘sand iron’?” (golf), “Which rock group did George Harrison belong to?” (The Beatles), “Who developed the theory of relativity?” (Albert Einstein)and “What is the capital city of New Zealand?” (Wellington).
Everyone brought different strengths to their team, with some students being more knowledgeable about Science and others about Sports. The students enjoyed the free sushi while planning their adventures around Australia and beyond! Some opted to book tours and trips in the coming weekends. Samira and Katharina got a great deal when booking their trip to Fraser Island for the upcoming long weekend and another group booked a trip to Surfer’s Paradise for this weekend.
Other students looked further into the future to when they finish their studies at Lexis Byron Bay. They booked full itineraries of travel around Australia, up to Cairns, down the east coast of Australia to Sydney and Melbourne, to Tasmania and to the Red Centre, just to name a few.

Commencing 2017 at Cape Byron Rudolf Steiner School is an independent, co-educational school from Kindergarten to Year 12 with 370 students and is situated about six kilometres from beautiful Byron Bay. Today at Coffee Lounge we soaked up the sunshine out in the Garden.
As always, the students enjoyed their TimTams – the packets were empty in no time at all! We also had great conversation, giving students from different parts of the world and from different levels the chance to practice both listening and speaking English.
Through talking with each other, we were able to get to know one another better and learn a few things about different countries in the world. For example, we discovered that Noori was involved in a peaceful protest against the rising University fees in Korea, Yuri had a near-death experience after eating day-old chicken, and, if she could replay a moment in her life, Priscilla would skydive for the first time all over again!
Enjoy the warm weather and sunshine Byron Bay! 🙂

Welcome to the six new starters at Lexis Byron Bay this week!
Clara is from Switzerland and is in Australia for a few months of her gap year between finishing high school and starting university. She has always liked soccer, and played it from the time she was a young girl. She even played in the national team for two years, which also helped her improve her German and French skills. In recent years she has given up playing soccer to focus on her school and when she returns to Switzerland she will then move to Berlin to continue improving her German. She plans to spend 6 weeks with us here in Byron Bay and another 6 weeks at the Gold Coast before returning home. She has always dreamed of visiting Australia and is very excited to study English here!
Pauline is from Belgium and has a brother and half-sister. She likes sports, such as going to the gym, skiing and handball. She has just finished high school and, when she returns to Belgium, plans to study at university. She is thinking about becoming an airline Pilot. She came to Australia to study English because she has dreamed of coming here since she was 14. She believes it is the perfect destination, as you can travel and learn English at the same time, while making lots of friends from all over the world. After her studies with Lexis Byron Bay, she plans to work and travel before returning home.
Lucile is from Belgium and lives in the capital of the country, Brussels. She loves to dance and has been practicing everyday for the past four years. Last year she was accepted into a dance company by a choreographer, which she is very excited about! She also loves to travel and visited California in the USA last year with her mother. She has just finished high school where she studied languages (French, German and English) and economics. She came to Australia because she has only ever heard positive things about this country and has always wanted to see it. In the future she wants to become a teacher.
Anna is from Germany and lives in Berlin with her mother. She is a passionate cook and photographer, and also enjoys fashion and culture. She came to Australia to get to know the culture here. She had also heard a lot of good things about the country from her friends and wanted a “seachange”, from the city to the beach, so decided that Australia was the best place for her to learn English. In the future, she plans to study Psychology at university.
Lucia is from Slovakia and is one of five in her family with her parents, sister and brother, plus a dog called Bambi. She likes swimming and cycling. She studied Finance and Investment at university and has worked as a Manager and Interpreter for a local company which conducts business in France. She has been speaking French for five years and is now in Australia to improve her English skills to enhance her job prospects when she returns home. She hopes to speak fluently in English so that she can obtain work as a lifeguard in Australia. She also looks forward to relaxing and having fun during her time here.
Lear is from Spain and is one of four in his family, including his mother, father and younger brother. He works as a chef and cooking is his passion. He also enjoys music, particularly old school rock and roll, and motorcycles, especially Harley Davidson motorbikes. He came to Australia to improve his English and to explore different types of products and flavours to use in his own cooking back home. One day, he hopes to open his own restaurant or to teach others how to be a good, hardworking chef.

Aline is from Brazil and graduates from Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class. She has been a hard-working, conscientious student who was a pleasure to teach. She has a keen interest in learning which has helped her to make great improvements with her English skills during her time at Lexis Byron Bay. She now plans to travel the east coast of Australia, driving from Byron Bay to Melbourne, before heading back to Brazil where she would like to continue her English studies. We hope you enjoy exploring Australia by car!

Over the past four weeks, she has shown confidence in her speaking and has developed her English grammar knowledge very nicely. Momo is from Japan and graduates from Kathleen’s Intermediate class. She has been a lovely student who has made great friends both in and outside of the classroom. During her six weeks at Lexis Byron Bay, she gained confidence and increased her fluency while speaking. She communicates effectively with people from different cultures and levels of English and has worked very hard, achieving an A grade for her effort. She is now off to work on a strawberry farm and hopes to do some travel in Australia before returning to Japan. All the best for the rest of your time in Australia and beyond!

Rodrigo is from Spain and graduates from Mel and Becky’s Elementary class. He has worked hard and made great progress with his English in his time at Lexis Byron Bay. He participated well in class activities and was very welcoming to new students joining his class. He is now working in Byron Bay and plans to enjoy the Summer months here before returning to his studies. We look forward to welcoming him back to Lexis in 2017!

It is a beautiful day in Byron Bay and we are making the most of it here at Lexis Byron Bat! This morning eight students and myself headed down to The Wreck for a surf lesson with the team at Let’s Go Surfing!
We had two awesome instructors, Blake and Johnny, teaching us how to surf. We were split into two groups – five who had never surfed before, and four of us who had done it once or twice in the past.
After getting kitted out with our wetsuits and surfboards, we first learnt a few of the basic skills about surfing while still on the beach. We learnt not only how to paddle and stand up on the board, but also about how to spot the best part of the beach to surf at and identifying rips.
The surf was a little rough but still small enough for us as beginners to feel confident in the water. We each caught wave after wave, putting what we had learnt on the beach into practice and eventually standing up!
A few of the students seemed to be naturals at surfing, and were standing up and riding the waves in no time at all. During just one hour in the water, they were able to keep improving and refining their skills to become more confident with their surfing.
Everyone managed to stand up at least once or twice by the end of the lesson and there was a smile on every student’s face the whole time!
