Coffee Club ☕ December 10th

We had our weekly Coffee Club today at Lexis Byron Bay!

And we have our nice little routine down pat these days!

What we do:

        • we put the kettle on and boil the water
        • we set the tea cups and mugs on the table
        • we arrange the different flavours of tea and coffee
        • and then assemble Jenga and Uno!

It’s a safe and fun environment to practice your English skills and to meet new people 🙂

Happy Student – Raphael!

18058034_213904745775489_849168858838328131_n

Raphael is from Bayonne in the South-West of France, he is 18 years old and he headed straight to Australia after finishing high school in France. He arrived in Byron Bay in November 2016 and stayed until March. He’s now headed to Bundaberg to do his farm work, so that he can save up for more travelling around Australia.  Raphael joined us an an intermediate speaker and on leaving he achieved an overall A in his Upper Intermediate class. Raphael is sorely missed here at Lexis. Who will DJ for our parties and BBQs now? I’m sure Cheeky Monkeys is missing its most regular customer too.

Raphael has answered some questions for us about his time at Lexis.

Why did you choose Byron Bay?

I remember the evening I spent with my mother in France, choosing the destination for my gap year. Originally, I decided the USA, but then I found a video about surfing in Australia – which made me fall in love with Byron Bay: the best place to surf in Australia! For me Byron is the perfect place for me: small, peaceful, joyful, good waves, no big buildings, but lots of bars to party all week!

Raphael on his very first day of school

What were your weaknesses in English before you came to Australia?

My major weakness in English when I arrived here were – everything! English was my weakness. But more seriously – it was my ability to understand the first time what someone told me. I had to make them repeat 3 or 4 times. Now I can see how far my English has come. Now I can understand films without subtitles easily!

Tell me about your teachers and your classes.

All of the teachers I had at Lexis were lovely. They were truly knowledgeable and made learning fun. In intermediate I had Iruka, I spent many funny times in her class. Then I moved into Upper Intermediate with the lovely Elyse, who was awesome and then I had Kathleen and her amazing games! My most memorable lesson was with Elyse when we had to dress with newspapers (yes yes newspapers!) when we were learning vocabulary about fashion and clothing design. That was ridiculous but so funny! 😂

What is it like living in our onsite Accommodation?

BBSA is now like my home. I met people from all around the world and I learnt about lots of different cultures. The best moments spent were the Christmas dinner, when we cooked Hamburgers, the sushi parties with the Japaneses people, the dinner tortillas with the Spanish guys, the spaghetti party with the Swiss people.Yes you’ve understood, all the best moments are around food! 😂

What were your favourite things to do in Byron?

The best times were all the parties with my bro Tito [See last week’s happy student blog!]  and all the others who are like my international family, the days of hangovers when we were all regretting going out the night before. But the best activity was surfing by far. All the surf sessions spent with Hiro, Nil, Pol, Tito and all the others were the time of my life.

18157017_213904705775493_6359306942790598976_n

What is your most magical moment in Byron?

I remember a time I was surfing at the Pass during sunset, catching one of the best waves I ever caught. The sun was going down in front of me, the reflection of the sun making the water yellow and orange, I’ll remember this all my life I think. I understood how peaceful life can be; in front of me, it was like the most beautiful painting I’ve ever seen: a colorful sunset on the beach. At my right there were people taking pictures and I had a strange feeling that made me understand you have to enjoy the moment with your eyes rather through your phone.  Yes I know it sounds very philosophical, but for me happiness is about little things like this.

What is your advice for people who are thinking about enrolling at Lexis Byron Bay?

My advice for people who are thinking about enrolling at Lexis Byron Bay is: Go for it!!! I am 100% sure you’ll not regret it, you will make so much progress with your English, furthermore, there are good activities everyday and lovely people to spend time with.

Raphael graduating – how far he has come!

What does the future hold for you now?

My plans after my farm work are to keep traveling around Australia, then Bali and maybe New Zealand, before coming back to France and going to university😭. Australia gave me the taste of travel, so I’d like to go in each country in Europe to keep discovering new cultures and people. I also want to go to Kenya and South America too! I want a life of adventure and travel, my nightmare is to be trapped in a routine with my job, Byron Bay has given me a taste of paradise and now I want to keep exploring.

Happy Student – Tito!

18010432_209012562931374_2165457964557203249_n

Tito is from Switzerland – the small village of Malvaglia. He arrived in Byron Bay 6 months ago and enrolled at Lexis, starting in the Upper Intermediate class. After several months studying General English, he went travelling round Australia in his van, with friends he had met at Lexis. He traveled down the East Coast, into the outback and finally to Sydney, before returning to Byron. He is now knuckling down to study for his Cambridge Advanced Qualification. Tito has become part of the furniture here at Lexis Byron Bay; you will often find him waxing his surfboard, skulking around reception looking for Tim Tams or involved in a heated table tennis match. Tito is a fantastic student and a pleasure to have at school, he is loved by fellow students and teachers alike.

I decided to interview Tito to find out a bit more about his experience here.

Why did you choose Byron Bay?

I chose Byron because I didn’t want to live in a big town with all the hustle and bustle – I wanted to live in a small town – here with the waves I can find peace, enjoying the sunny weather and the fresh sea air. I think I would to define Byron Bay as an open minded and multi-cultural place.

boys

What were your weaknesses in English before you came to Australia?

I was a little bit rusty in everything concerning grammar – for this reason it was essential to go on a formal English course. Being here for 6 months, using the language has become natural – I think it is a process which takes time, but you can really see your improvements by being fully immersed in a situation where the use of this language is required.

18033978_209012312931399_1600763903313032396_n

Tell me about your teachers and your classes.

I have been enrolled in upper intermediate and then advanced, where I had the opportunity to meet the amazing teachers Claudia and Josie – Claudia is an extremely knowledgeable teacher and I liked her way of explaining a lot of grammar rules which before were difficult for me to understand. Whereas Josie is the most motivating teacher that I have ever had and it’s a great pleasure to learn such a challenging syllabus with a teacher who makes it seem so easy and enjoyable.

What is it like living in our onsite Accommodation?

It’s an extremely comfortable and familiar place to live – there is a very sociable environment, it is very easy to make friends and as soon as you arrive you become part of the onsite family. It is always possible to go out of your room and hang around in the common area, seeing all of your friends. Since my arrival I’ve met a lot of gregarious people with whom I have organised many dinners, for example the Easter Sunday dinner where almost all the residents (50 people) cooked delicious dishes to share in a friendly and pleasant environment. Many students from around the world made different dishes from their home countries. I made a pizza from scratch, inspired by my Swiss Italian heritage – so tasty.

17951989_209012622931368_997784327999815512_n

What is your favourite activity that we run here?

The most attractive activity is undoubtedly the table tennis tournament, where only the student with the best skills can win the title and of course the beer. It is always full of cheering crowds, the competition gets very heated. Romain is better than me, so he usually wins, but I win second place, which is also an impressive accolade. Don’t worry if you think you are not going to win, we will still share the beer with you!

What are your favourite things to do in Byron?

Most days I enjoy spending my time at the beach, surfing, sunbathing and playing beach games such as Frisbee and Volleyball. It is wonderful to live and study right on the beach. I will never forget the time when a dolphin passed right under my surfboard, what a breathtaking moment! I often see dolphins when surfing, during the Summer it is as common as seeing bushturkeys. You also can’t leave Byron without experiencing the nightlife of this delightful town; Sticky Wicket, Lala land, The Rails and of course Cheeky Monkey’s are all lovely pubs/clubs where you can meet local people and share drinks and great discussions with your friends. A warning though: Do not abuse alcohol; otherwise you will pay the consequences the next day at school!

Fashion Show -Upper Intermediate! 9 February

Today Elyse’s Upper Intermediate class put on a Fashion Show for their unit on ‘Fashions and Trends’!

They split into groups to create outfits for their models out of newspaper.

The outcome can only be described as impressive!

The models took turns to walk the catwalk and the other members of their group then used adjectives to describe the outfits and explain the thought behind them.

The team of judges then discussed who should walk away as the winner. Tito and Maxime made some very good  and thoughtful points on how they had come to their decision.

The vote was unanimous and the crown went to………..

Coffee Lounge! November 1

We had two sessions of Coffee Lounge today – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. At the morning session, we played Aussie Heads which requires asking questions to discover the identity of the card stuck to your forehead!

img_0661

It is a great game to help practice English by both asking questions, giving clues to other players, and guessing the right English word for your card. Everyone did really well with asking the right questions to discover their identity, even with the more difficult cards such as ‘Aussie Dollar’, ‘Great Barrier Reef’ and ‘Sandcastle’.

In the afternoon we played Lexis Jenga, which is just like normal Jenga but with a question written on each tile which the student answered when they had pulled it out.

img_0672

The questions help the students to learn some more English words and phrases, and encourage speaking to explain their answers. It is also a great game to help get to know each other – today we found out that Myuri likes to dance in the shower, Mayumi’s favourite movie is Titanic, and Yuki would make everyone visit Japan if he ruled the world!

Some students come along to Coffee Lounge for the conversation, others come for the TimTams…Roman and Pol are definitely here for the TimTams and would do just about anything for one of those biscuits!

Pictionary + Pizza! October 26

This morning we played a game of Pictionary while also enjoying some pizza!

img_0604

Pictionary is a game where one person from each team picks a card with a list of words on it. They then have to draw a picture of this word and the other person on their  has to guess what it is before the timer runs out. The teams take in turns rolling the die to move forward on the board, and the first team to reach the end wins.

There were some great drawings and very close competition between the three teams! Bruna and Nozomi raced through the board, with Saya and Othman close behind for much of the game. Erika and Yuri were left behind and were not feeling hopeful, but they made a quick comeback just in time and joined Bruna and Nozomi at the finish line! With two teams on the last square, the race was on to draw and guess the winning picture (which was of a sun). The three teams all started drawing and within a couple of seconds all three teams were yelling the answer! So in the end, the result was a tie between Bruna and Nozomi’s team, and Erika and Yuri’s team.

img_0618

Everyone had fun trying to guess their partner’s drawings and eating the free pizza while learning new English words. 🙂

Coffee Lounge! October 25

Today is Coffee Lounge day!

img_0567

This morning we enjoyed our coffee and TimTams while playing a game of Charades to practice our English.

We took it in turns acting out different actions and activities and everyone had to try to guess what we were acting out! For example, in the photos above you can see Bruna acting out “washing an elephant” and Saya acting out “milking a cow”. It was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to learn new English words and phrases.

img_0587

In the afternoon we played a game called ‘Paper Telephone’, a different version of the game Telephone (also known as Secret Whispers, Grapevine and many other names, depending on where in the world you play this game!).

img_0596

The students took turns – the first writes a sentence, the next draws a picture for that sentence and then the next writes a sentence for that picture, and so on. Each person can only see the previous person’s addition (i.e. they can only see the one picture or sentence that the person before them contributed).

By the time the paper had gone around the group once, the sentence and pictures were quite drastically different from where they started! For example…

…two cats sleeping in a tree ends up as two cats chilling out on the grass (after going through changes including sitting in a tree, fighting, playing and scratching the ground – sounds like a standard day for a cat really!). The other examples have a guy surfing in a rabbit costume turning into a koala surfing on his board, and unicorns flying over clouds became two cows inside a cloud!

It was a funny way to practice and learn more English words while enjoying the coffee, TimTams and good company!

Thai Cooking! October 19

Today we got into the kitchen to do some Thai Cooking.

img_0469

We cooked up a Thai Green Curry, in both the morning and afternoon sessions, and it was delicious!

The students learnt many new words and phrases to do with cooking (such as ‘grater‘, ‘to drain‘ and ‘ladle‘) and the ingredients we used (for example, ‘water chestnuts‘, ‘kaffir lime leaves‘, and for Othman who had never heard of it before, ‘tofu‘).

In the afternoon we even had a trained chef help us out! Lear is a student at Lexis but is also an excellent chef so he taught us a few tricks with frying tofu, juicing limes and chopping chillies!

img_0483

Here is the recipe for anyone who wants to try this at home…

img_0485

Ingredients

Oil 300g tofu
4cm piece of ginger 200g sliced water chestnuts
½ lemongrass stalk 1 small broccoli
240g Thai green curry paste 150g baby corn
500ml coconut milk 250g snow peas
500ml vegetable stock 250g bean sprouts
2-3 kaffir lime leaves 1/3 cup chopped salted peanuts
4 tsp sugar 1 small red chilli
Juice from 2 limes 250g rice noodles

Method

  1. Using the small holes on a grater, grate the ginger and lemongrass. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add ginger and lemongrass, and cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until soft. Add curry paste and cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  2. Add coconut milk and stock, stir to combine. Add kaffir lime leaves and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  3. In a frying pan, heat some oil. Cut tofu into 1cm cubes, then fry over medium heat until lightly browned on all sides.
  4. Add sugar, lime juice and tofu to the curry. Simmer for a further 2 minutes. Stir in the water chestnuts.
  1. Cook the rice noodles then drain. Cut the broccoli into small florets then cook in boiling water for 2 minutes. Trim the ends of the snow peas and the bok choy into quarters then add to saucepan with broccoli to cook for a further 2 minutes. Drain and rinse in cold water.
  2. Drain the bean sprouts and slice the red chilli ready for serving.
  3. Divide the cooked vegetables between serving bowls. Pour green curry over the vegetables. Garnish with bean sprouts, peanuts and red chilli.

Well done to Andi who achieved 100% on his progress test this week!

Andi is from Switzerland and has been studying at Lexis Byron Bay for just three weeks so far, and will be staying with us for another nine. He has impressed his teacher and class and one of his classmates thinks that, with these results, he will be moving up from Pre-Intermediate to the Cambridge class in no time! Coffee Lounge! October 18

Today at Coffee Lounge we practiced our English conversation skills with a couple of games! Of course, we also had some yummy coffee and TimTams as well!

In the morning, we played Lexis Jenga which is the same as traditional Jenga, but with a question on each tile. After pulling out a tile, you then answer the question.

From today’s questions we found out that Bruna’s favourite ice cream flavour is vanilla, Stefan has been to eight different countries, Saya’s favourite thing to do in Byron Bay is go to the beach, Isabella once got a speeding ticket for R$80 (approximately AU$30 – a cheap fine by Australian standards!), and Othman’s favourite season is Winter because the weather is much cooler then in his home country of Saudi Arabia.

img_0432

This game is a great way to practice and learn English words and phrases while also getting to know your fellow students. We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Frida, the dog enjoying her coffee in the photo, who was being looked after by Lexis student Isabella!

In the afternoon, we played Charades which involved acting out English phrases for the other students to guess.

Some phrases were quite difficult and were a good opportunity to learn a phrase the students had never heard of before. For example, ‘raking leaves‘, ‘chasing a tornado‘ and ‘landing a plane‘. Others were a bit easier and were a lot of fun to act out and guess, such as ‘milking a cow‘, ‘filming a movie‘ and ‘washing an elephant‘! Every student who acted out a phrase got a TimTam (which is enough to convince even Roman to join the game!) and enjoyed the time learning English and laughing along with their friends.

English+Surfing with Alessa!

alessa

Alessa is from Switzerland and studied at Lexis Byron Bay for two weeks on the English in Action – Surfing course. During those two weeks she studied English in the mornings and learnt to surf in the afternoons.

Her first visit to Australia was in January of this year, when she spent a month travelling with her family. She loved the country and the people so much that she had to come back!

She arrived in Australia with an Intermediate level of English and, although her time at Lexis Byron Bay was short, she feels has learnt more and improved her English language skills.

img_0157

Alessa had never surfed before, so was quite nervous for her first lesson! Over the two weeks she had eight lessons with the team at Lets Go Surfing Byron Bay who taught her the basics of surfing and helped her to improve. By the end of the eight lessons, she was feeling very good in her ability to surf and hopes to keep surfing when she returns to Europe.

One of Alessa’s favourite things about Byron Bay was the people. In particular, she enjoyed meeting all the people at Lexis Byron Bay and the friends she has made from all  over the world.

img_0166

Alessa (second from right) enjoyed the Coffee Lounge conversation activity with other Lexis Byron Bay students

Alessa said she would definitely recommend the English in Action – Surfing course to anyone thinking of studying English and learning to surf in Byron Bay. She said the team at Lets Go Surfing Byron Bay  are really nice, very motivated, always have a smile and make the lessons really fun!

Now Alessa is enjoying two months of travelling around Australia. After Byron Bay she is off to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and then Perth before  flying back to Switzerland.  We hope she has a great time travelling around the country and continues to practice both her English and her surfing!

She flew over here with her friend and, after six weeks of studying English, they will meet up again in Brisbane to travel. They plan to rent a campervan and drive to Cairns, spend a week there and then drive back down to Sydney to fly back to Switzerland.

Julie is from France and is one of five in her family. All her family members live in different locations – her mother in Montpellier, her father in Bordeaux, her sister in Marseille, her brother in Milan, Italy, and now herself in Byron Bay, Australia! She loves to travel and would be very happy if she could travel for the rest of her life. She also enjoys reading, going to the cinema, having fun with friends, and keeping fit with running, going to the gym or swimming at the beach. She works in sales and has been in her job for six years. She wants to improve her English because it is spoken so widely across the world and is helpful for travel, and she is also planning to work in Australia.

Stefan is from Switzerland and is one of four in his family, with his mother, father and older brother. He likes to play field hockey with his team every week, though he says they are not doing too well this season! After finishing high school, he has worked for a few years as a Landscape Gardener and completed his one year of Military Service. He is interested in plants, animals and other cultures. When deciding to study English, he chose to come to Australia so he could experience the beautiful plants, animals and landscapes of this country. He would also like to learn how to surf while he is here. Stefan wants to learn English to help with travelling and to enable him to teach German to the refugees in his town.

Gaetan is from Belgium and lives with his family, including his mother, father and older brother, near the city of Brussels. During his free time he likes to participate in many different sports, such as hiking, soccer or going to the gym. While studying at a Physical Education school, he has also been working many different jobs in his holidays to save up for his trip to Australia. He wants to study English because it is widely spoken around the world and could be beneficial for his career. He decided to study in Australia because it is a beautiful place that he has never visited before. He also likes to surf, which Australia is perfect for!

Ai is from Japan. She came to Australia on a Working Holiday visa and hopes to learn enough English to travel and work here for the next year.

While studying in Germany, he met his wife and they now live together in Germany with their three children. He also has a father and brother living in Brazil, and another brother living in Perth, Australia. Paulo likes to go surfing, mountain biking and travelling. He works for DHL, which is a German logistics company, in the IT Department. He enjoys his work and has a lot of fun in the workplace. This company is international, with colleagues working in many different parts of the world, which is why he wants to improve his English. He decided to study in Australia so that he could also visit his brother in Perth, surf the many great beaches and to see the beauty of this country.

Table Tennis Tournament! October 14

Today we had planned to play volleyball but, unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and it was not a pleasant day to head to the beach. Instead, we held a Table Tennis Tournament!

With the last tournament being held just last week, the players were highly motivated to defend or claim the title of Lexis Champion! Today’s winner was Roman, who has a strong background in tennis (as a tennis instructor back in Spain!) and won the 6-pack of beer to enjoy.

Graduation! October 14

We have four students finishing at Lexis Byron Bay this week: Carla, Maria, Alessa and Lucia.

carla

Carla is  from Spain and graduates from Iruka’s Intermediate class. She has been an exceptional student who has worked hard to achieve great results. In class  she has been enthusiastic, helpful and respectful to other students. Outside of class she has worked well on homework and self-study, and is described as a model student by her teacher! Carla plans to enjoy another couple of weeks in Byron Bay before heading to back Spain, but hopes to return to Australia in the next few years to continue learning and practicing her English. We look forward to seeing you back here Carla!

maria

Maria is from Spain and graduates from Claudia and Ellie’s Upper Intermediate class. She is a lovely student to have in class, with an enthusiastic and dynamic personality that always lifts the class atmosphere. She contributes very well in class and has shown herself to be a dedicated and intelligent student. Maria has worked hard during her time here and has improved her English in all areas. She will be in Byron Bay for a few more weeks before travelling in Australia and possibly doing some more studies. You will be missed in the Lexis Family but we hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Australia!

alessa

Alessa is from Switzerland and graduates from Kathleen’s Intermediate class. She has been at Lexis Byron Bay for just two weeks, on the English in Action – Surfing course. In class she made a positive impact, with her lovely nature putting other students at ease and encouraging them to speak. This enabled her to get lots of speaking and listening practice, which resulted in great improvements in these skills. She is a quick learner, picking up and using the new grammar and vocabulary taught in class. After learning English in the mornings, she spent most of her afternoons learning how to surf the famous Byron Bay beaches! Alessa now has two months of travel around Australia planned before going back home. Enjoy exploring more of Australia!

lucia

Lucia is from Slovakia and graduates from Paul’s CAE Advanced class. She showed great aptitude for the English language and, with just four weeks at Lexis, she studied for two weeks each in the Upper Intermediate and Advanced (CAE) classes. She now plans to do some travel while figuring out her next step – possibly to continue studying English. We wish you all the best for the future – whatever it may hold!
