Didgeridoo Lesson! March 20th

1.JPG

Yesterday we had the amazingly talented Craig come in and introduce us to an incredible art form – playing the Didgeridoo!

He explained all about what a didgeridoo is – a wooden instrument developed by indigenous Australians, along with a bit about the history and origin of this instrument which has been used within aboriginal tribes for years. It was fascinating to learn about how they form – from finding the perfect branch or tree trunk, to working with it’s natural form to further hollow out the centre and polish it to a smooth finish. Many hours of hard work go into making each didgeridoo and they can range in price from a few hundred dollars to well over a thousand!

Craig had a selection of didgeridoos for us to choose from. Each mouth piece was finished with a special wax, to help seal the edges around the mouth so that no air could get through to disrupt our sound.

The first thing we had to do was practice making a special vibrating sound with our lips, (lots of laughs!) which we then had to do into the didgeridoo – it was surprisingly difficult!

We learned about making different sounds and rhythms, with some mimicking the sounds of animals such as the kangaroo and others sounding like the word ‘did-ger-i-doo‘!

Some of the group were naturals, taking to it so quickly, while others (like me) took a little more practice! 😉 One thing is for sure though – everyone had a fantastic time! Thanks Craig 😀

Didgeridoo Lesson! 20 September

Yesterday we had Craig, from Fifth Circle Music Therapy, come in to teach us the basics of playing the didgeridoo!

We started with vibrating our lips into the didgeridoo, then practiced incorporating different sounds and rhythms with this.

The didgeridoo is a wooden instrument developed by indigenous Australians. Craig told us a bit about the history and origin of this instrument which has been used within aboriginal tribes for years.

Craig taught us how to the imitate the sounds of two of Australia’s native animals, the kangaroo and dingo; first practicing without, then through the didgeridoo. We had lots of fun howling like wolves and making the bouncing noises of the kangaroo!

Some of us were more natural didgeridoo players than others… teacher Adrienne’s technique was best described as ‘cat’s bum’.

This was a brilliant authentic and cultural experience for all of us and one we all thoroughly enjoyed!

Didgeridoo Lesson! 1 August

Today Craig, from Fifth Circle Music Therapy, gave some of our students a lesson on how to play the Didgeridoo!

IMG_5632

The didgeridoo is a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians. It is made from limbs and tree trunks hollowed out by termites (insects). It produces a low-pitch, vibrating sound with complex rhythmic patterns and was used in tribal groups to accompany chants and songs.

Craig is a musician/performer with 20+ years experience in songwriting, live performance, recording, session percussion, teaching and mentoring – as well as a passion for assisting and supporting others through music therapy.

He showed the students how to use their mouths to make different sounds through the didgeridoo and also told them a little bit about the culture and background of didgeridoos in Australia.

This was a great authentic Australian activity for the students to enjoy and they all picked it up very quickly!
