Making Dreamcatchers! 7 March

Yesterday Orla and I taught the students how to make dreamcathers!

I had a small group in the afternoon, which made it easy to show and help each of them individually, ensuing they were made to perfection!

We all opted to go for neutral, rustic designs. Once we had covered the outer ring and made the web, we made them more decorative with hanging feathers, tassels, shells and beads.

Maria and Patricia made theirs to go in their van, which will no doubt give them fond memories of Byron and Lexis when they’re on their travels, whilst Raphael decided his made a great accessory for glasses!

Dreamcatcher Making! 12 December

On Wednesday we had a delightful morning and afternoon making dreamcatchers!

I demonstrated first how to make the netting and then assisted the students to do their own (with some needing more assistance than others!)

Using our box of materials, beads, shells and feathers we then decorated our dreamcatchers, with some beautiful results!

Carlos showed us just one of the many things they can now do with their dreamcatcher…

Previously students have given them as a gift (often to their homestay families!), hung them in their vans before going off traveling, decorated their bags with them, and taken them home as a souvenir of their time in Byron! Or they can use them for their original purpose and simply hang them in their rooms to protect them from bad dreams!

Tie Dye! 26 November – Afternoon

Last week we had a fun afternoon Tie Dying!!

Before we could start getting messy the girls wanted to protect their clothes from any dye and came up with some beautiful fashion designs to do so! I think my favourite was probably Kiki’s, who added a belt around her newspaper dress!

I showed the students a simple way of getting the tie dye effect but, being the creative bunch that they are, they all wanted to experiment with their own designs!

Some rolled their tops up, separating sections with elastic bands then covering each with a different colour…

Estelle made tiny knots using elastic bands and ended up with this brilliant design…

Nuria used the same bottle of green dye, but kept adding more water so she could get lighter colours and end up with this faded effect…

While trying to decide what I wanted to do with mine I accidentally splashed some die all over it, but just decided the go with it and add more! I’m actually pretty happy with the result…

A great afternoon was had by all and we now each have a perfect memento of Byron Bay’s hippy vibe!

Make a Dreamcatcher!! 13 September

Yesterday we had a creative afternoon making our own Dreamcatchers!

IMG_6257

We followed a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vmtkc7FOWLw&t=3s) to get us started, then the students created their own, with me on hand to help!

There was plenty of different fabrics, threads, beads and feathers for the students to use, so they were all able to make theirs completely unique!

Entertainment was provided with some beautiful singing from Eric, Lorene and Sacha, my particular favourite being their rendition of Queen’s Break Free!

I was very impressed by the different ideas everyone had for their dreamcathcers and the brilliant results!

Boomerang Painting! 8 August

Yesterday we got creative (and a little messy!) with Boomerang Painting!

IMG_5703

I showed the students some symbols typically used by aboriginals along with their meanings and also some examples for them to copy,

but they were all happy to create their own designs!

After a relaxing hour of painting we put them to the test, with them returning most of time, until we lost 1 on the roof and 2 in a tree!

Jewellery Making! 21 June

Yesterday we had a lovely afternoon making jewellery here at Lexis Byron!

I showed the students how to make net wrap pendants, that can then be turned into necklaces, bracelets, key chains, bag accessories or just decoration!

They also made some of their own designs using the beads, shells and jewels available to them!
