Mixed Skills – Shopping Trip

Teacher Kristy tells us about the shopping trip she took with her Mixed Skills Options class…

In Mixed Skills we went shopping!  We learned language for shopping and hit the shops:

“Do you have this in a size 10?”

“Where is the changing room?”

“This doesn’t fit.  It’s too long.”

“Where do I pay?”

Here are some videos and their shop conversations…didn’t they do well?!

😊😊😊

Kana                      Excuse me, I’m size 6, do you have this one in an 8?

Shop Assistant  Let’s go have a look.

Where did you get it from?

Kana                      I’m from Japan 😉 Ah, from over there.

Shop Assistant  We’ll go and check that out.  Sorry, we don’t have a 6.

Is it good enough?  You can try a 10.

Kana                      Yes, thank you.  Where is the changing room?

Shop Assistant  Over here.

Kana                      Thank you very much!

😊😊😊

Song                      Is this a small size?

Shop Assistant  It’s a 28, it’s the smallest size we do.

Song                      Can I try this on?

Shop Assistant  Yes, of course you can.

Song                      Where is the changing room?

Shop Assistant  It’s here.

Let me know if you need another size.

😊😊😊

Asana                    I like it!

Shop Assistant  It’s so nice!  I love the sleeves.

Asa                         It’s a little bit too small…

Shop Assistant  Too small?

Asa                         Yes.

Shop Assistant  I don’t think so…I think the next size might be a bit too big.

Asa                         My hips are wide.

Shop Assistant  Do you think the next size will be better?  Is this the 6?  Do you want me to see if I’ve got an 8?  Yeah?  No, there’s one out the back.

Shop Assistant  What’s your name?

Asa                         Asa.  A S A.

Shop Assistant  I’m Tracey.

Asa                         Nice to meet you.

Doesn’t Asa look beautiful in that dress!

Byron Bay Recommendations – from our Intermediate class!

Mel and Julia’s Intermediate class have been covering the subject of ‘Recommendations and Suggestions’.

In pairs or groups of three they were asked to give recommendations for Byron Bay, here’s what they suggested… 🙂

Marta and Juliana:

You should try a surf lesson and hiking to the lighthouse because the view it’s amazing! The best way to get around is by bike. We’d recommend sun beach Wategos, skydiving and kayak would be a good idea as well.  To drink, to talk to friends and just go out, you can go to Beach Hotel. To have breakfast you should definitely go to Kombi. September is probably the best time to visit here because there are people but not too much! Take care with sharks, kangaroos on the road, spiders in your shoes and snakes, because they can be everywhere!

Lighthouse

Byron’s Lighthouse, where you can spot dolphins and whales (May-October)

Shiho and Eleonora:

  • It’s probably best to go to the lighthouse and the sunrise and try to see dolphins and whales.
  • That’s well worth seeing the principal beaches like Wategos, Tallows and The Pass.
  • You should definitely see the sunset at Main Beach, where people sing and play drums.
  • The best time to visit is Spring.
  • You really must do surfing and go with kayak.
  • I’d recommend to go to the Rails at because there is live music and you can meet a lot of nice people.
  • You can go to the Gold Coast and visit the big buildings and the beaches.
  • Be careful in the jungle because there are a lot of dangerous animals.
Sunset

Sunset at Main Beach

Chihiro, Dana and Pinky:

  • I’d recommend to go surfing at Main Beach, because there are some shops and cafes near here so you can enjoy surfing with coffee. You should definitely go to Tallows Beach. You can see beautiful sun rising. There is more private than Main Beach.
  • It’s probably best time to visit in Autumn, because summer is too hot and city is too busy.
  • You should definitely go to lighthouse. You should see sunrise in the morning and you can also watch dolphins and whales.
  • I’d recommend Beach Hotel at night. You can enjoy DJs music, a lot of drinks, and dancing. And you can see the ocean from there.
Beach Hotel

The Beach Hotel; a great place to socialise, with views of Main Beach

Juliane and Ayaka:

I’d recommend to walk between The Pass and Wategos Beach. You should buy a bicycle, ride to The Pass, lock your bike there and walk to Wategoes. You should visit White Beach, is after Broken Head. It’s probably best to rent a car to go to White Beach.

You can use this car also to go to Yamba and Red Cliff. These places are about 2 hours driving south and you can camp there.

You really must go to Crystal Castle and Minyon Falls, Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads.

Super Food Cooking Class – Upper Intermediate

This month Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class took their lesson to the kitchen!

They each had to choose a super food (a food rich in nutrients), research it’s facts and history and then use it in a recipe!

Interestingly chocolate is considered a super food! Brilliant news 🙂 Research shows that dark chocolate especially can lower blood pressure!

Everyone then got to try each others dishes as the creator explained the information they had gathered about their super food!

Fashion Show – Adrienne’s Pre-Intermediate Class!

Last week to end their unit on Clothing, Adrienne’s Pre-Intermediate class put on a fantastic Fashion Show!

In small groups they had to create an outfit for one of their team to to wear and show off on the catwalk!

Using the vocabulary they had learnt throughout the week, each team gave a very amusing description for their outfits!

Everyone made a brilliant effort and it was an extremely entertaining afternoon for all!!

The topic of the class was the film Eat, Pray, Love; a film staring Julia Roberts on a quest of self-discovery!

Judit explained meditation to her classmates:

Meditation is an active training of the mind to increase awareness.

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

She also taught them about the origin and the benefits of meditating, such as reducing depression and anxiety, and increasing concentration and awareness.

The class then practiced meditating under Judit’s instructions.

Paper Free Day!! 7th November

On Tuesday all of our Lexis campuses supported World Paper Free Day!

World Paper Free Day is an annual campaign that aims to reduce the amount of paper generated by people in their everyday work and personal life. Businesses and people are encouraged to stop using paper for the whole day in order to stop them being so reliant on it!

We turned the photocopier and printers off to encourage us all to think about our paper usage and to get our teachers to be even more creative with lesson planning!

For Kathleen’s Intermediate class she used PowerPoint slides and encouraged her students to take pictures on their phones rather than needing photocopies of the slideshow. They then played vocabulary races; where the students were split into teams and had to describe a list of words to the rest of their team members, the winners were the team who guessed all their words the quickest!

Anji took her IELTs class to an internet cafe to research useful sites for IELTs materials. They also did a speaking workshop to help prepare them for their upcoming exams!

Claudia’s Upper Native Speaker options class spent the afternoon in pairs practicing their speaking and conversation skills.

Adrienne had her class explaining how to play different card games to each other for her Conversations options class.

For Michele’s Elementary class she displayed images on the TV and the students had to describe the picture to their partner.

Kristy’s class used the whiteboard for their classes, writing down words to practice their pronunciation!

In the afternoon the General English students have their options classes. They are usually full of lots of fun, games and laughter!

This week in Harriett’s Speaking and Writing class the students  discussed famous super stars. The students enjoyed playing the guess who celebrity game. Some students really got into character  using different hats and props!

The class then decided to create their own Lexis English Celebrity talk show!

There was a variety of interviews in the classroom with  super star guests such as Rihanna and Selena Gomez. It was great fun and a great way to practice speaking and listening!
