Class trip to the Movies

On Wednesday our Intermediate and FCE class went to Palace Cinema to watch the movie 2040.

cinema

It was about a journey to explore what the planet would look like by the year 2040 while focusing on what is happening now. From the movie we found that there are lots of solutions such as marine permaculture, shared energy, renewable energy, balanced agriculture and female empowerment and education.

We strongly recommend everyone to watch 2040 because it is such a good movie to learn about how we can contribute to a bright future.

Happy Student – Izabela Franco De Sad; Making Dreams Come True!

Izabela started studying at Lexis English in December last year and she brought with her a very special energy. She was such a pleasure to have in the school that, before she left, I asked her if we could do an interview to find out more about her and her time at Lexis Byron Bay. It turned out that her trip was the culmination of a dream that she’d nurtured for many years. Read what she told me below:

  1. Why did you decide to come to Byron Bay to study English?

I started dreaming about coming to Australia when I was 15. My vision of Australia was a place full of beaches, sunshine, friendly people and a relaxed way of life. I also knew that having a good level of English would be important for my life – for getting a good job and for travelling and meeting people.

So, from the age of 17, I worked to save up to make this dream come true. I worked in restaurants, hotels and offices, sometimes four jobs at a time until, eventually, I earned enough money to pay for my entire trip myself.

I went to an agency to book my trip and they advised that I went to Sydney or the Gold Coast as it was easy to find work there. I nearly booked my trip but first decided to look at Google Earth. When I saw all the skyscrapers and the cars I was disappointed. This wasn’t the vision I’d had of Australia all these years.

So I sent messages to five different contacts I had that had been to Australia and asked them to advise where I should go. One friend told me about Byron Bay and said that 100% it was the place for me, as soon as I Googled it I knew she was right.

  1. How has your English improved and who/what helped with that?

Before I came to Australia, I wanted to make sure that I had a reasonable level of English so that I could really jump straight into the lifestyle here and also have more chance of finding a job straight away. My mum was so proud of me saving up for my trip all by myself and so, as a reward, she paid for me to have English conversations classes.

This was really useful but I was still thinking in Portuguese and then translating into English when I first arrived. However, once in Byron Bay, the necessity of talking English all the time makes you improve crazy fast. Plus the teachers at Lexis Byron Bay are great. They gave us phrases and conversation practices that were so relevant and which we could use in our real lives, immediately. Plus they corrected me, which people in the street don’t do, so I soon improved my accuracy too and got better and better.

I did General English and Cambridge FCE and found them both really useful. The method of teaching is really good and Paul, my Cambridge teacher, was so funny.

  1. What was it like living/working in Byron Bay?

I’m probably not the best person to ask because I can’t be objective. I’m simply in LOVE with Byron Bay. I’ve found myself here!

I really believe that Byron chooses people. I feel like I can allow myself to be me here and be and do everything I that wanted to be. I find people here are different. Everyone wants to live in a simple way and enjoy life in tune with nature, love and the things that are really important. For example, getting up early to share a sunrise.

Work-wise, I’ve had the same job since early January. I work at Trattoria Basiloco, an Italian and pizza restaurant in town. It’s a great job. Everyone is really nice and helpful. I didn’t find it difficult to get a job at all but I do think you need to be proactive. Choose the places you want to work and then make yourself known there. It helped for me that I was studying Cambridge too. It gives employers confidence that you have a pretty good level of English and will be able to communicate easily with the customers.

As for friends, I’ve met some wonderful people. Lexis Byron Bay is a really friendly environment so it’s easy to meet people straight away. Then, over time, some people I met grew to be really good friends. Now there is a group that I have such great connection with; with no problems or dramas. And I met them all through Lexis Byron Bay.

  1. What was/were the best thing/things about your trip?

It’s not a single experience or even something I did; it’s that I’ve discovered myself. Through this experience (even the difficult times such as when I was fined $319 for not wearing a bike helmet) I’ve learned what makes me happy, who I am and who I can be. And I’ve gained the confidence that I can do whatever I want.

Now I’ve finished my English studies, I’m going to stay one more year doing a massage course. This takes me up to September next year. I’m not sure what I’ll do then, but, at the moment, every day I say to someone how lucky we are to be here. When I’m watching the sunrise or swimming or playing guitar on the beach I feel such gratitude: to myself for giving me this opportunity; to the people I’ve met in Byron; and to Lexis Byron Bay for being such a huge part of this experience.

Friday Football!

This afternoon some of our students demonstrated their impressive football skills in the Lexis garden.

They were still playing at the time of writing, but the beer for the winning team is waiting for them in the fridge.

Lessons in the sun!

The weather is so beautiful here in Byron Bay this week that many teachers are taking the opportunity to do part of their lessons in the sun.

On Monday, Kristy’s class were doing a running dictation (one student has to run, read something, remember it and tell their partner who writes it down. Then they swap).

Then, today Kathleen’s class were doing pair work discussing relationships. They had to tell a relationship story and then, later write a poem about someone they felt strongly about.

What a lovely way to study English! And it’s only the start of summer. We’ve got months of this lovely sunshine to look forward to 🙂

Activities in July

Activity Calendar

The July activity calendar is now confirmed:

Some highlights includes next week’s sushi making competition. You don’t need experience for this as we will provide ingredients and a basic recipe. However, each chef or team of chefs can create their very own flavours and designs for judging.

The following week, we have the ever popular boomerang painting and table tennis tournament plus wine tasting with Naomi. This will sadly be Naomi’s very last day at Lexis English so make sure you all go along to say “Cheers”.

Week three sees the return of body boarding. This activity is completely free and all equipment is provided. Maybe this time, Claire will actually get in the water and have a go!

Finally, on the Friday of week 4 you can learn all about the incredibly popular sport of rugby. This activity is definitely for girls as well as boys and you don’t need to know anything about rugby beforehand. Claire is really keen to share her love of this sport with you all, we hope you can come along.

You’ll also notice that the activity calendar now includes a column showing the weekend activities offered by BWT. You’ll need to see Shak to book these and remember the more students that sign up the more fun it is and the better the price can be.

Friday’s Volleyball in the Garden

On Friday, two teams enjoyed the winter sunshine by playing volleyball in the Lexis garden. Josie, our teacher, who was watching from the sidelines said it was a really good game with everyone playing fair and hard.

Graduation 23 June

Today we said goodbye to to five students and see you later to another.

We are going to miss Shodai and Felipe from Kristy Pre-Intermediate class.

Kristy said she really enjoyed teaching Shodai, that he had a kind and smiley personality and always asked good questions. She also said she hated notice a great improvement in his speaking and pronunciation.

Felipe, who was here for 24 weeks, was described as positive, caring and kind because of the way he helped other students in class.  He has progressed from Elementary level and now can communicate much more fluently than when her arrived.

davFrom Josie’s Upper Intermediate class we say goodbye to Pauline, who was also here for 24 weeks. Pauline has made excellent progress during her time at Lexis English, progressing from Pre-Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate. Her teachers said she always participated in class and will be sadly missed from the class.

20170623_121537Two students also graduated from our new Advanced class. Mauricio has been at Lexis Byron Bay for 18 weeks and started in Intermediate. His teacher, Claudia, said that it had been a pleasure teaching him and that his vocabulary and speaking skills have greatly improved.

IMG_7086Julio has been here for 14 weeks in total and was previously in our FCE preparation class. Although he only studied with Claudia for a few days she said that she enjoyed his contributions in class.

IMG_9090Finally, we are saying a temporary farewell to Bitna. Bitna has already studied at Lexis Byron Bay for 20 weeks and will return in July for another 20 weeks. She has already progressed from Elementary to Intermediate and will be ready to start thinking about exam classes when she returns. Enjoy your holiday Bitna!

At Lexis, every week is bittersweet, as we say goodbye to our students. We wish you all the very best in your next adventures.

Coffee Lounge 20th June

The Lexis Byron Bay Coffee Lounge had a guest host this week, as Claire is on holiday.

Instead, providing the Tim-Tams, coffee and conversations was our much-loved teacher Josie. She really enjoyed mixing with students from a range of levels, including some students from her recent CAE Preparation class. In fact, she enjoyed it so much that she’s volunteered to do it all again next week.

BWT Travel Talk (and Pizza)

At lunchtime today, Shak from BWT came to the school to tell all our students about our weekend activity programme; the BWT welcome pack and the BWT travel desk.

Everyone enjoyed a slice or two of Domino’s pizza while Shak went through the contents of the welcome pack, which includes, amongst other things, a $50 off voucher.

He then reminded them about Tuesday Party night at Cheeky Monkeys where students can enjoy free entry, free drinks all night and 50% off all meals.

Finally, he introduced the weekend activity calendar for July. This month we have Nimbin and Noosa trips plus skydiving and whale watching. (See full details below.)

Shak will be at the BWT Travel Desk on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 12.15 and 3pm.

Reports from the Farmers’ Market

Last week Paul’s FCE class went on an excursion to the Farmers’ Market. The purpose was to do some research so that they could write an exam format report about their visit.

The full reports are in the photos below, but here are some of the highlights from a class of very talented writers.

At the market you can find many different stalls selling a wide range of things, such  as fresh organic vegetables, fruits, organic coffee and different kinds of juices. Besides this, you can buy a breakfast and eat it there enjoying a good live music.    Julio

I think the local market plays a good role in local business. Nowadays, it’s difficult to get fresh and organic local products due to the fact that there are many supermarket chains. We tend to buy everything there owing to the low-priced. I believe we can make our life better if we contribute to local business.     Sakiko

The only problem we can find is the prices of products, but this is the sign of quality that marks the difference between the organic products at the farmers’ market and what you get at supermarkets.         Maria

The market takes place at the Rails Park every Thursday in the morning between 8am and 11am. I definitely recommend this market for everybody who wants to go shopping for fresh food and have fun while doing it.      Gabriel

Thank you to Nil and Cesc, from Paul’s class, who are responsible for the beautiful photos.

A Report from an English + Yoga Student

Angela Soledad Gonzalez Faro from Spain recently joined the Lexis Byron Bay Campus to take part in our English and Yoga course. Having previously studied Cambridge Advanced Exam Preparation at the Noosa Campus, Angela very kindly agreed to demonstrate her report writing skills to give us her thoughts on the English and Yoga experience.

See below for her (mostly) uncorrected report:

YOGA EXPERIENCE IN BYRON BAY

Introduction:

The purpose of this report is to give an overview of my experience doing different types of yoga in Byron Bay for 10 days as well as to include recommendations for improvements for attracting a great number of foreign prospective students.

Byron Bay:

“Welcome to Byron Bay. Cheer up, slow down, chill out.” Is there a better way to welcome someone in a new place? I don´t think so :-). This small town full of alternative people, live music and lots of art in the street stole my heart. As a yogini and vegetarian looking for a healthy lifestyle Byron became the paradise for me. To make things better, you can find a tremendous variety of restaurants in which you can enjoy appetising and delectable healthy food value for money.

Yoga lessons:

Lexis Byron offered me the possibility of doing different types of yoga. I could choose among Bikram yoga, Yang to Yin, Vinyasa, Hatha and Restorative yoga. I generally practise Ashtanga/Vinyasa yoga, which is very active and dynamic and this opportunity was a doorway into the vast and amazing world of ancient yoga. My favourite styles were Restorative yoga and Yang to Yin yoga which both are very quiet, completely different from Aashtanga. They helped me to relax and rest. On the other hand, Bikram yoga was pretty hard for me due to the high temperatures in which this style is practised. I was struggling from the beginning to stay in the hot room and my pressure was low. Simply, it is not for me, each person is different. However my classmate really loved it. At the end of the Bikram practise I felt very relaxed and calm but I didn’t enjoy the practice.

Recommendations:

It was an enriching and lovely experience. However, I would recommend you providing us with a bike in the school owing to the fact that the yoga centres are pretty far from the school and downtown and the majority of people don´t want to buy a bike for staying in Byron for just 10 days.  The experience was great, I really enjoyed it!!!

Thanks Angela, we enjoyed having you 🙂
