Last month BWT (Backpacker World Travel) arranged a special Brunswick BBQ day just for our Lexis students!!
They arranged for the bus to pick everyone up from school in the morning to take them all to Brunswick to enjoy a Saturday in the sun with their Lexis friends 🙂
They stopped at the bottle shop on the way so everyone could stock up on alcohol for the day’s antics!
Once in Brunswick they found a spot on the beach to set up. There they enjoyed drinks, a tasty BBQ and various ball games!
BWT arranged a competition with a Slip ‘N Slide; the students were split into two groups and had to slide to the end and down a glass of goon. The winners from each turn then went on to compete against the other winners until it was down the last 3!
These three lucky students each won amazing prizes courtesy of BWT!
1st Place: Chris – 3 day/2 night Fraser Island trip!!
2nd Place: Oliver – Kiwi Experience pass for the North Island of New Zealand!!
3rd Place: Louis – Great Barrier Reef trip!!

Every Monday the delightful Zara from BWT (Backpacker World Travel) leads a lighthouse walk for our Lexis students!
The walk is designed to help our new students get to know the area, as she first takes them through town and shows them where the banks, post office, supermarkets and good places to go out are!
Any and everyone is welcome to join though! Just meet out the front of school at 2pm 🙂
From town you’ll then head up to the iconic Byron Bay lighthouse, past the most Easterly Point in Australia, to spectacular views of the beaches and ocean!
So far on the walk students have been lucky enough to spot whales, dolphins and a koala with it’s baby!!

This coming Saturday why not try Stand Up Paddle Boarding with your classmates?! The Northern Rivers is a beautiful location for this relaxing water sport!

The following weekend they have indoor rock climbing on the Saturday for just $13 and Circus Arts on the Sunday for $40!

September is typically the month the whales start heading back to the Antarctic, with their newly born calves in tow! They’re particularly playful as they teach their babies how to breach and tail slap!

This week some of our students went Whale Watching with BWT’s Shak!!
For those who don’t know… Between May and November each year Humpback whales migrate from their antarctic summer feeding grounds to their breeding and birthing grounds in the tropics in the East and West coasts of Africa, South America, Australia and towards the South Pacific islands. It is estimated that the number of Humpbacks that migrate up the East coast of Australia is around 17, 000!!!
With this amount of whales passing through Byron Bay you’re pretty much guaranteed to see one during migration season; at the beach, from the lighthouse and almost certainly on a boat trip!!!
When our students Valerie, Natsumi, Maria and Kotori went on Tuesday they whales, turtles and native birds!

Next week is the start of OCTOBER and we have an exciting month of activities planned in the mornings and afternoons especially for our Lexis students!
Every Monday you can stretch out and relax doing Yoga with Stef in the garden from 11-12 and with Fee in Room 8 from 2:15 to 3:15. Don’t forget that the 3rd of October is a Public Holiday, so there will be no school next Monday!
On Tuesdays we have Coffee Lounge, which gives our students the opportunity to practice their English and get to know each other while enjoying great coffee and yummy TimTams!
On Wednesdays we will start the month with a Table Tennis Tournament to find this month’s Lexis Champion. I have noticed a lot of students using the new table, practicing for the next tournament so there is sure to be some good competition! The following week we have Flavio coming by at 11am to teach us how to Skateboard and Chloe will be here at 2pm to run a Mindfulness meditation for our students. Later in the month we are getting into the kitchen to do some Thai Cooking, exploring the delicious flavours of Thailand while making a traditional Green Curry. Then to finish off the month we have Pizza and Pictionary in the morning, which will be a fun way to learn some new English words and phrases, and in the afternoon we can get creative while learning about Aboriginal Australian culture at Boomerang Painting.
Every second Thursday we have the very popular 1-hour Surf Lesson with the team at Lets Go Surfing. These lessons are only $20 and are a great way to give surfing a try before booking more lessons to help you become a real Byron Surfer! Alternating with this, we have Job Club for those students looking for work in Byron Bay and wanting extra help with writing their resume, preparing for interviews and applying for jobs.
On Fridays we will celebrate the first week of the course book next week with a Start of Course BBQ in the front garden, both in the morning and afternoon. For the rest of the month we are getting active, with Volleyball and Soccer on different days (in the garden for the morning session and at the beach for the afternoon), and a morning session of Slacklining in the garden with Olmo and a Bike Ride to Tallows Beach in the afternoon.
GIL (Guided Individual Learning) runs every day from 12-1pm and 2-3pm in Room 8. Come along to get help with anything from homework to vocabulary to writing your resume.
We will also continue to enjoy our Student Nights at Cheeky Monkeys every Tuesday night – meet at BWT @ 8pm first to get your drinks, food and fun!

Today we had Matt and Zak from Backpackers World Travel here in the Student Lounge for our students to plan and book their travels at special discount prices.

The students enjoyed the free sushi while planning their adventures around Australia and beyond! Some opted to book tours and trips in the coming weekends. Samira and Katharina got a great deal when booking their trip to Fraser Island for the upcoming long weekend and another group booked a trip to Surfer’s Paradise for this weekend.
Other students looked further into the future to when they finish their studies at Lexis Byron Bay. They booked full itineraries of travel around Australia, up to Cairns, down the east coast of Australia to Sydney and Melbourne, to Tasmania and to the Red Centre, just to name a few.

Patrick was one such student taking advantage of the great deals to book his trip in December, after he graduates from Lexis Byron Bay. He will be heading up to Cairns and then over to Fraser Island, The Whitsundays and Magnetic Island, where he hopes to go skydiving again!

We will be screening a Blockbuster Movie for the students, with free pizza while they watch one of the latest new releases. For students wanting to explore Byron Bay and beyond, there will be a BWT Travel Bonanza with a free sushi lunch and great deals on travel and activities! Then we will finish off the month with some yummy Aussie Cooking.
On Thursdays we will Learn to Skateboard with Flavio and do some Mindfulness meditation with Chloe. There will also be Job Club every second Thursday for any students wanting help writing their resume and applying for jobs in Byron Bay.
On Fridays we will end the first week with Boomerang Painting to learn a bit about Aboriginal Australian art. The following week we have the 1-hour Surf Lesson for only $20 which is a great opportunity to try out surfing! We will meet a little earlier for this one, at 10am, to give us enough time to make our way to the beach for the lesson before returning with plenty of time to relax before class. We also have Olmo coming along to help us Learn to Slackline in the garden. Then we will finish off the month with a friendly game of Soccer.

Then we will finish off the month with the Soccer Challenge, playing against another school in Byron Bay. Last time we had a great match but unfortunately lost, so this time we hope to win back the trophy! Sign up at Reception to join the team!

This afternoon the students set off into the sunshine on a Scavenger Hunt! They got into teams of 2 or 3 and were given two lists of items to find around Byron Bay. The first list included items relevant to their afternoon Options class and the second were general items around Byron Bay. The first team back for each class who had completed their Options class list won a 6-pack of beer, and the team back first with both lists complete won a Kayaking Trip each from BWT!
The winning team from Ellie’s Mixed Skills class was Maria, Yuki and Priscilla.
They won a 6-pack of beer for being the first team back with their Options Class list completed! In class they are studying ‘Health and Fitness’ this week, so their list of items reflected what they have been learning. They completed items on the list such as a photo of a team member doing the “Usain Bolt” pose in a shop that sells sports clothes, a selfie with a person who looks like they exercise regularly (though they are not sure he understood why they wanted a photo with him!), a photo with a beach towel that is bigger than the smallest team member, a photo of team members doing yoga poses in the park, and a photo of a team member showing three products which help us stay safe in the sun.
Paul’s Speak like a Native class had a very efficient team win the beer after completing the class list!
Juliano and Maria were very quick (and rather puffed out on their return) and completed their list by getting photos of Aussie slang words, for example, of a team member holding a pair of “Budgy Smugglers”, a photo of a “Hot Chick” and a “Hot Bloke”, a photo of the “Meat Pie Menu” and a photo of a tube of “Zinc Cream” at the Chemist.
The winning team from Becky’s Film and Music class was Vanessa, Leticia and Momoko.
They were the quickest team in their class to complete the items on their class list which were about Film, Music and Australiana, including getting photos of the two video shops in Byron Bay, a shop where you can buy records, a video of a busker, a photo of Aboriginal Art, a photo of a team member holding a boomerang and an example of Aboriginal language.
The winners of the BIG prize, for completing both the class list AND the general list were Richard and Emiko!
After completing the list from Paul’s class by getting photos of “snags”, a carton of Coopers Pale Ale (beer) at the “bottlo”, and the “bouncer” at Beach Hotel, just to name a few, they then completed the general list too! This included getting a selfie at the Lighthouse, photos of the most easterly point of Australia, a photo using the barbecue at Wategos Beach, a photo of the waves at The Pass, a selfie at the Lexis English school sign and a photo of them doing a surf pose in front of BWT!

Next week is the start of AUGUST and we have an exciting month of free activities planned especially for our Lexis students!
Every Monday you can stretch out and relax doing Yoga from 2:15 to 3:15 in Room 8.
On Tuesdays we have alternating weeks of Coffee Club with coffee, TimTams and conversation, and Learn to Skateboard with Flavio for beginners wanting to learn or more experienced skaters wanting to learn some extra tips and skills.
On Wednesdays we will start the month with the popular 1-hour Surf Lesson for just $20! Make sure to sign up and pay at Reception to secure your spot. In the following weeks we will get into the kitchen to do some Thai Cooking and Baking Koala Cupcakes. We will also get artistic and learn a bit about Aboriginal Australian culture and art while doing some Boomerang Painting. Then we will finish off the month with an afternoon of Beer Tasting!
Every second Thursday there will be a Movie with free popcorn and Job Club in Room 5. There will also be a special Blockbuster Movie screening with free pizza one week and a Mindfulness session on the last Thursday of the month.
On Fridays we will get active with Volleyball in the garden, a session with Olmo to Learn to Slackline, and a Soccer match in the garden. On the last Friday of the month we will have a big afternoon planned for a Lighthouse Photo-Scavenger Hunt with prizes!

This afternoon the fabulous ladies from BWT, Marcella and Jodie, joined us for a Travel Bonanza!
The students enjoyed the free pizza before hearing about many amazing travel adventures in Australia and beyond.
They also played some games and a few lucky students won some great prizes! Mac and Natsumi won a stubby holder and a packet of TimTams, Paola won a BWT voucher and Tom won the big prize of a Snorkeling Tour for the Great Barrier Reef!

Last night was the weekly Student Night at Cheeky Monkeys. After meeting at BWT, we made our way to the bar and enjoyed the free food, drinks and good times!

Last Tuesday was another night of the usual antics at Cheeky Monkeys. As I wasn’t able to go this week, I almost missed out on Floriant‘s big dance off! But here are the pictures from the Dance Competition in which Floriant came in second place, only just missing out on the $100 prize…

Tell us about yourself!
Originally I’m from Santos on the East Coast of Brazil. I put my backpack on just over three years ago now and have never got round to going home! Most of that time has been spent in Australia.
What is your favourite trip or destination in Australia?
How do I pick something like this? I absolutely loved Uncle Brian’s Rainforest tour in Cairns as well as the reef trips, but nothing can beat the thrill of jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane at 14,000ft!!!!!
What is your favourite thing to do in Byron Bay?
I love the sunrise at the lighthouse where I can admire the beautiful Byron Bay beaches, but my favorite trip is the snorkel at Julian Rocks Marine Reserve which is home to three different species of sea turtle, an assortment of rays including mantas, hard and soft corals, friendly wobbegong sharks and over four hundred different species of fish. What a beautiful please to explore the marine life!
Where are you planning to travel to next?
I never want to stop travelling! There are so many places still on the wish list, but the top two for now have to be the West Coast and Tasmania .Oh, and I’ve just been invited to go Skiing in Japan next year!
