Happy Student – Sina 🦘

Today our Happy Student at Lexis Byron Bay is Sina!

Tell us a little about yourself Sina:
My name is Sina, I’m from Switzerland and I’m 21 years old. Before I came to Byron Bay I was working as a carpenter. I want to learn English because I like to travel and then you have to speak English. I have been in Byron for four weeks.

Why did you choose Byron Bay?
I chose Byron Bay because I was shown photos of the school and Byron and I wanted to go. It’s also the opposite to Switzerland, this is another reason why I wanted to go. It’s easy going and chill.

What were your weaknesses in English before you came to Australia? Tell me more about your teachers and your classes.
Some things in English were hard. My weakness would be grammer, and the use of present or past tense. I had a good teacher and funny class. Michelle is funny and so nice. How she explains everything was very good.

What was your favourite activity?
Jewellery making I think was my favourite. I liked boomerang painting too, though the skill of jewellery making is one that I can do every day.

IMG_8977

Tell me about your accomodation/homestay…
I was staying in Suffolk Park and had a very good house mother. She is a very good cook, and would read over my essays and help me with my English. I would also ride my bike to school, it was good and I can get the money back when I sell it.

What are your favourite things to do in Byron?
I love to watch the sunrise in Byron, and I like to do the lighthouse walk.IMG_20191109_095933What is your most magical moment in Byron?
I think the sunrise.

What did you like the most about Lexis Byron?
Well, it’s like school. A relaxing school.IMG_8776What is your advice for people who are thinking about enrolling at Lexis Byron Bay?
You should go! It’s a good place to make lots of friends from everywhere.IMG_0049

Wednesday Afternoon Boomerang Painting! November 20th

Wednesday’s afternoon activity was Boomerang Painting! On such a warm day, we decided to sit outside in the student common area.

We had plenty of paints, brushes, and Aboriginal diagrams to work with and of course,  wooden boomerangs.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We discussed each Aboriginal symbol and it’s meaning as well as working out which colours were most effective.

Beautiful work ladies!

Boomerang Painting 🎨 November 20th

Boomerang Painting took place downstairs in the common area at Lexis Byron Bay!

This is some of the beautiful work created by Sina and Lucia.

We listened to Dreamtime music while we created stories on our boomerang canvas.
The students discussed the different symbols, colours and techniques each wanted to try.

Lucia creating her artwork, and Sina working on her boomerang.

We read through the different types of boomerangs:

  • hunting boomerang
  • returning boomerang
  • cross boomerang

It was decided that what we were working on looked more like the ‘returning boomerang’, though was only for decorative purposes.

Students also practiced their English while looking at the works in progress.

IMG_0049Sina’s Boomerang: the main feature is the kangaroo. She has only seen one though is hoping to see more on her travels around Australia. Sina has been told that there are hundreds near Melbourne airport!

Lucia’s Boomerang: the central focus on Lucia’s boomerang is the koala. She had great difficulty trying to paint it!

Boomerang Painting! September 19th

Yesterday afternoon’s activity was Boomerang Painting.

IMG_6474

It was a stunning afternoon so we decided to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine!

In Aboriginal culture it is common to see the style of painting where a lot of tiny dots are painted to create a specific shape. These shapes or symbols often represent things relevant to aboriginal culture.

Fabbi had the brilliant idea to bring along some cotton-tips. We used these to make the perfect tiny dots. I was so impressed!! They look just like the ones you can buy in a store. I hope you keep them as a nice memory from your time here in Australia and at Lexis Bryon Bay.

Boomerang Painting! August 8th

Yesterday afternoon’s activity was Boomerang Painting.

The traditional Australian boomerang has been historically used for hunting, as well as sport and entertainment. They are commonly thought of as an Australian iconic symbol, and come in various shapes and sizes with all sorts of beautiful, colourful designs. In Aboriginal culture it is common to see the style of painting where a lot of tiny dots are perfectly painted to create specific shapes. These shapes or symbols often represent things relevant to aboriginal culture.

We had the creative freedom to come up with our own unique designs or follow the more traditional Aboriginal designs. A lot of imagination and colour was used. The finished product looked beautiful.

Boomerang Painting! 27th March

We had a relaxing afternoon painting boomerangs in the student lounge. The rain poured down outside while we got creative inside. Everyone came up with their own unique design. Some of us chose to follow the traditional aboriginal style while others let their creative imaginations run wild.

They all look amazing, I think even better than the ones you can buy in a store!!

Boomerang Painting! March 27th

Header

Today we had the very fun and creative activity of Boomerang painting! Our Hiroshima Juniors joined with  their classmates and together, we all painted our own individual boomerang.

IMG_2765

Everyone ready to start! 🙂

I had some painted boomerangs to show as examples, as well as some information about the meaning behind all the symbols – an interesting insight into the traditional Aboriginal style, used to tell stories through the artists paintings.

See everyone concentrating hard on their masterpieces! 😀
