Yesterday we had Craig, from Fifth Circle Music Therapy, come in to teach us the basics of playing the didgeridoo!
We started with vibrating our lips into the didgeridoo, then practiced incorporating different sounds and rhythms with this.
The didgeridoo is a wooden instrument developed by indigenous Australians. Craig told us a bit about the history and origin of this instrument which has been used within aboriginal tribes for years.
Craig taught us how to the imitate the sounds of two of Australia’s native animals, the kangaroo and dingo; first practicing without, then through the didgeridoo. We had lots of fun howling like wolves and making the bouncing noises of the kangaroo!
Some of us were more natural didgeridoo players than others… teacher Adrienne’s technique was best described as ‘cat’s bum’.
This was a brilliant authentic and cultural experience for all of us and one we all thoroughly enjoyed!

It was a very relaxing and meditative way to spend an hour and everyone’s boomerangs looked amazing!

Larissa is from Brazil and lives in the city of Sao Paulo with her mother and brother. She is studying Biomedical Engineering at university and in the future hopes to continue her studies at a university with a more advanced course in this area. This is part of the reason for her wanting to study English. She also chose to study in Australia because she has a cousin living in Sydney and she visited Australia herself when she was a young child but doesn’t remember much of that trip. She chose to live in Byron Bay to experience living in a small town with a calm, relaxing lifestyle and after just one day here so far, she already loves it!
Shirori is from Japan and is one of four in her family, with her mother, father and older brother. She loves yoga and hopes to one day be a yoga teacher. She decided to study English to help her reach this goal. She chose to study in Byron Bay because this area is well known for having a lot of different yoga classes and retreats to experience.

Today we sampled some Australian ciders. It was a perfect activity for the hot weather on the first day of Summer!
The ciders were brewed all over Australia, from the Adelaide Hills (The Hills Cider Company) to Sydney (5 Seeds) and a couple of local ones from Byron Bay (Treehouse Cider and Wild Cider).
Everyone had a different favourite, which wasn’t surprising given the broad range of tastes and flavours in these ciders.
From a dry, crisp apple to a sweeter pear and an infused flavour of native Finger Lime with apple, there was a cider for everyone!

Today at Coffee Lounge we had a lovely game of Aussie Heads in the morning and tested our brain power with Riddles in the afternoon!
At the morning session, everyone asked excellent questions and discovered the name on their card very quickly!
Othman even figured out Boomerang with little difficulty, though this is his favourite Coffee Lounge game and he has played it a few times during his studies at Lexis Byron Bay!
In the afternoon, Myuri, Mayumi and Natsumi were enthralled with the riddles and worked their brains hard to figure them out – successfully almost every time too! Tito resorted to google to find the answers but enjoyed the TimTams all the same 🙂

Today we had two lovely sessions of Coffee Lounge enjoying the coffee and conversation and, of course, the TimTams!
In the morning we played a game where a student would describe an object, animal or place and the others would try to guess what it was. This helped the students practice their English both in speaking and listening, as well as exposing them to new words and using the language in a different way than usual.
In the afternoon we had a few different games going, after first trying to master drinking coffee through TimTams. The students love trying this very Australian way of drinking coffee, with some even making it a part of their morning ritual!
After going through all the TimTams (so quickly!) we got into some games. We had riddles and brainteasers to keep our minds working hard for the hour to not only work out the answer, but to work it out in English!
Some examples of the riddles include: 1. What has a thumb and finger but is not alive?
2. What do you buy but not use, when you use it you don’t know it, and you only use it once?
3. What belongs to you but is used more by others?
Answers to the riddles are: 1. A glove. 2. A coffin. 3. Your name.

Welcome to the four new students joining us at Lexis Byron Bay this week!
Laura is from Colombia but has spent the past six years living in Germany. She is the youngest of her family and her parents, older brother and older sister all still live in Colombia. She loves sports, such as playing volleyball or watching soccer, and enjoys dancing to latin music including the salsa, merenge and bachata. She has just completed her undergraduate studies in Germany, in International Business with Event Management. She plans to start her Masters degree next year in Sport Event and Marketing Management in Berlin. She decided to study in Australia to improve her English to help her future studies and career. She also has a keen interest in other cultures and has always wanted to visit Australia to see the beautiful nature and beaches.
Marta is from Spain and lives on the island of Mallorca with her parents. She is an only child but has a lot of cousins in her extended family. Last year she completed her studies to become a teacher, with her final training taking place in Morocco. This was a life-changing experience for her and has inspired her to travel around the world helping children without easy access to education. She is planning to spend nine months in Australia and hopes to improve her English while meeting lots of people from all over the world and enjoying the beautiful environment of the country.
Kazuma is from Japan and is one of six in his family. He enjoys playing and watching sports, especially baseball, but is a bit disappointed that this is not played much in Australia! Instead, he is looking forward to learning how to surf and possibly making this his new favourite hobby. He decided to study at Lexis Byron Bay to improve his English because he wants to work as a nurse in Australia. For this he plans to study hard so that he can achieve a high score on the IELTS test. He also wants to be able to speak English well so he can communicate with others easily and enjoy his life here in Australia.
Sayuri is from Japan and is one of four in her family, including her mother, father and younger sister. She has been wanting to study English overseas for a while now so is very happy to be here! She likes swimming, walking, travelling and photography, and enjoys her annual trips to the beach with her family. She studied English for 12 weeks in the Philippines and, though she learnt a lot there, is now looking forward to building on that knowledge and improving her speaking and listening skills. She decided to study in Australia because she loves Summer, the sea and warm places, and because she wanted to experience living in another country.

This activity requires patience, relaxation and awareness of breath and body to master.
Some of the students had a bit of experience slacklining at previous Lexis sessions and others were total beginners. All of them had a lot of fun learning and practicing the skills that enabled them to find their balance on the slackline!
You can find Olmo at the Circus Arts Park&Fly down at Denning Park (opposite Main Beach) over the Summer months. 🙂
