Aussie Food Tasting… Round 2! November 8th

It was another round of Aussie Food Tasting this afternoon at Lexis Byron Bay. All students were eager to taste the Australian delicacies on hand!

Vegemite – Alice was the only one who didn’t mind the unusual taste that is a good ol’ Aussie staple but she cheated when it came to putting it on her toast😆.

Fairy bread – Something you will find at a children’s birthday party. Everyone loved it! IMG_E8653

Party Pies – This was everyone’s favourite of the day. Nice, hot, and savoury…YUM!

Musk Sticks – Not so good on the taste buds!

Anzac Biscuits and Lamingtons – Definitely something they’ll try again.

Macadamia Nuts and Caramello Koalas – Something tasty to end on!

Students were happy today at Lexis Byron Bay because we had Aussie Food Tasting!

Lots of different foods were tried and tested!

IMG_8848

Most of the foods could be described as Aussie Junk Food and could be found at a children’s birthday party 🥳

Some food options were definitely rated higher than others 😋

On the menu today was:

  • sausage rolls
  • meat pies
  • Vegemite and Vegemite on toast
  • fairy bread
  • must sticks
  • Milo
  • lamingtons
  • Caramello koalas
  • ANZAC biscuits
  • macadamia nuts

Milo and Caramello Koalas were rated the highest!

Though no one really liked Vegemite at all 😫

Aussie Food Tasting! August 1st

Thursday afternoon the rain was pouring so we decided to have a last minute change of plans from our scheduled Photo Challenge to Aussie Food Tasting instead!

The students were able to try Aussie favourites: Vegemite, Lamingtons, Tim Tams, Macadamia nuts, Allens red frogs, Musk sticks, Caramello koalas, Anzac biscuits and Fairy bread! We also had sausage roll and mince pies

To accompany their snacks we had a selection of Kirks soft drinks and Milo (chocolate and malt powder mixed with milk), both popular here in Australia!

It was a tasty afternoon with a wonderful group of students 🙂

Aussie Food Tasting! June 13th

Yesterday afternoon’s activity was Aussie Food Tasting in Room 1!

IMG_3308

We had a range of delicious.. (and some not so delicious) Aussie favourites to taste.

IMG_3302

The sausage rolls and mince pies were the first to be demolished.. definitely a crowd favourite!

IMG_3304

We also had macadamia nuts, caremello koala’s, musk sticks, lamingtons, tim-tams, milo, kirks fizzy drinks, vegemite sandwiches, fairy bread, Anzac biscuits and red frogs to try.

As you can tell from the facial expressions of everyone in this video..

Not everyone enjoyed vegemite for the first time, it’s certainly a taste to be acquired! 🙂

IMG_3315

Hinako was the only student who did enjoy vegemite and Ayumi of course loving the tim-tams 🙂

IMG_3316

Camila, not sure about the musk sticks..?

IMG_3319

Cyntia and Nami tasting Milo for the first time. Perfect technique with the heaped tea spoon! The more milo and the less milk, the better! 😉

IMG_3321

Hikaru.. slightly puzzled by the mince pies.

IMG_3322

I think Luc was the only one in the class who actually enjoyed the musk sticks

I hope you all enjoyed at least some of the Aussie food we tried! I am interested to know what other food you have enjoyed during your time in Australia. Roslane recommends the kangaroo burger from the Railway Hotel and the I can safely say the fish and chips from Hunky Dory are delicious. 🙂

Aussie Food Tasting!March 21st – Morning

cover

Yesterday in the student lounge, we held a special Aussie food tasting activity! There are lots of special treats and savoury snacks that are very poplular in Australia and we got to learn (and taste!) more about them.

We had a range of delicious (and some not so delicious…!) foods to try:

  • Musk Sticks (pink semi-soft sweet stick with floral, musk flavours)
  • Allen’s Red Frogs (chewy jelly treats)
  • Macadamia Nuts (found in both New South Wales & Queensland)
  • Anzac Biscuits (oat biscuits)
  • Vegemite (yeast extract spread, popular with toast!)
  • Mini meat pies (pastry pies filled with meat, gravy, onion, mushrooms & cheese)
  • Sausage Rolls (savoury pastry snack & popular party food)
  • Caramello Koala (chocolate bar filled with caramel)
  • Tim Tams (chocolate covered biscuits)
  • Lamingtons (a small sponge cake square coated in chocolate and coconut)

Among the favourites were TimTams and sausage rolls! 🙂

Brave students trying Vegemite… 😀

Everyone enjoyed the delicious treats and our Hiroshima Juniors got to mingle with some of the others students from their classes too 🙂

Have YOU tried all of these Aussie favourites yet!? 😉

Aussie Food Tasting! 21st March

Today we gave some Aussie classic food a taste.

There were some crowd favorites and some food that nobody liked! We discovered that, with a lot of butter, vegemite sandwiches are not so bad!! We all agreed lamingtons are delicious, and are NOT made out of the same sponge you wash the dishes with! It was a revelation to work out mince pies are savory, and not sweet and some of us thought musk sticks taste like perfume. The Tim Tams we are all familiar with, were the first plate to be emptied.. closely followed by the very yummy ANZAC biscuits!

It was nice to see everyone giving everything a try, even if some of the food seemed strange and didn’t smell very good (vegemite)! It will be fun to make our own ANZAC biscuits soon!
