Re-match Soccer Game against BBELS! May 22nd

Yesterday afternoon we had our highly anticipated re-match against BBELS.

When we played last time it was a disappointing loss for Lexis. After a close game, BBELS scored the winning goal in the final 5 minute tiebreaker.

Enrique was our designated captain for yesterdays game. He took it upon himself to get us motivated by practicing a New Zealand haka. The haka is a type of ancient Māori war dance traditionally used on the battlefield, as well as when groups came together in peace. You will often see New Zealand sports team perform a haka before a game.

Great enthusiasm from the students! I had stitches from laughing so hard!

The students had some warm up exercises before the match started and lucky for us we also had the loudest support crew!

With all of our shouting we managed to attract a new friend.. The adorable Cookie!!

He was definitely ‘Team Lexis’!!

The match went on as the sun began to set.

After 15 minute quarters we were all exhausted. Thank you Captain Enrique for keeping us enthusiastic! Unfortunately it was another close game, with BBELS taking the win with a final goal in the closing minutes. The final score was 4-3. Hard luck Lexis.

It was still a great afternoon. Thank you to everyone who played and came down to support!

Salsa & Sangria! May 17th

Friday afternoon we strapped on our dancing shoes and got funky for Salsa & Sangria with Danni from Sassy Salsa.

IMG_2475

We started off with a warm up to get us into the swing of it…

And then we got straight into learning a short ‘reggaeton’ routine…

Which then quickly escalated into an epic group dance circle…

Now everyone was well and truly warmed up and ready to enjoy some sangria! I made the sangria following a simple recipe of red wine, orange juice, a table spoon of maple syrup and diced apple, strawberries, orange and lemon.

Our lesson continued learning some salsa moves and practiced with a partner.

Thank you everyone for such a fun afternoon! I am already looking forward to our next dance lesson. 🙂

Boomerang Painting! May 16th

Boomerang painting was on the agenda for today and we couldn’t of picked a better afternoon to spend indoors getting creative. The rain came down outside as we kept cozy and warm in Room 1.

Lamingtons and chocolate fingers were the perfect Australian treat to spike the sugar levels and get our creative juices flowing.

The traditional Australian boomerang has been historically used for hunting, as well as sport and entertainment. They are commonly thought of as an Australian icon, and come in various shapes and sizes with all sorts of beautiful, colourful designs. In Aboriginal culture it is common to see the style of painting where a lot of tiny dots are perfectly painted to create specific shapes. These shapes or symbols often represent things relevant to aboriginal culture.

There was some great takes on the traditional patterns and also some with Byron Bay flair. They all looked great!

Now to take them to the beach and test them out!!

Coffee Club! May 14th

It was a great turn out for this weeks coffee club! We had our usual selection of delicious coffee’s and of course everyone’s favourite, Tim Tams.

It was nice to have a catch up with everyone about their weekend and life in Byron. Then we got stuck in to a very serious game of Jenga.

Lexis Jenga is exceptionally fun because each block piece has a question on it so we can all get to know each other better whilst we play.

Serious concentration was required.

Then it was Talita’s turn …. the moment it all came crashing down!

So we played another round while we continued to sip our coffee’s..

Until it was Talita’s turn again…

Haha sorry Talita, but thank you for making us all laugh!! 🙂

Coffee Club happens outside the student lounge every Tuesday at 2pm. Come and join us to chat with new friends and of course, for coffee and Tim Tams!

Body Boarding! May 10th

Friday afternoon’s free activity was body boarding!

IMG_2099

We all walked down together to see Blake, Katie and Hughey (the dog) at ‘Lets Go Surfing’. They were kind enough to lend us the boards for the afternoon and also wet suits if we wanted them… but we all decided we were tough enough without them.

It was a slightly windy afternoon, but the sun was shinning and the water was warm so we didn’t mind too much.

The group headed out into the waves between the flags. This is the safest part of the beach as it is always patrolled by lifeguards.

The waves were slightly choppy due to the wind, but everyone did amazing! I even spotted Hinata catching a wave with no hands! Go girl!!

I hope you all enjoyed body boarding! Have a safe and happy weekend!

Sushi Making! May 9th

Thursday afternoon’s activity was the delicious art of sushi making!

IMG_2004

We got to work preparing the vegetables and avocado.

Nanaka and Ai helped lead the way with the most important job.. The rice!

We had special short grain sushi rice but the rice cookers were proving to be slightly difficult and stopped working half way through. As a group we decided to finish cooking the rice on the stove.

In the mean time, Mano decided to taste test the wasabi.. he managed to convince Nami and Ai to do the same.. as you can imagine, it wasn’t pleasant.

Then the taste testing then moved on to a sweeter flavor; carrots and nutella chocolate spread… hmm.. Strange combination, but surprisingly, it was quite yummy.

Happy faces all round as the rice is finally cooked to Hongki’s high standards!

Ai and Nanaka helped cool the rice and added the vinegar and sugar to flavor.

Then it was time to roll!

Ai showed us how to make onigiri and the rest of us used the sushi mats to make hand rolls.

Now for the best part.. eating! They looked and tasted amazing! Well done everyone 🙂
