Soccer Match! Lexis vs. BBELS ⚽. December 11th

TEAM LEXIS!

Having a rest at half time!

Each half was played for 25 minutes, which on such a hot day, is long enough! In the end, Team Lexis came out on top 1-0 but both teams equaled in effort. Well done everyone!

Looking forward to the next match.

Christmas Traditions: History of Cookie Decorating 🎄🍪

 History of Cookie Decorating 🎄🍪

Have you ever stopped to wonder why we do certain Christmas Traditions? Did you know that Cookie decorating dates back to at least the 14th century in Switzerland? Springerle cookie molds were carved from wood and used to impress Biblical designs into cookies. One of the earliest recorded forms of cookie decorating is the springerle, and the oldest known springerle mold is housed at the Swiss national museum in Zurich, Switzerland.

220px-Springerle_with_typical_foot_swabian_Fuessle.jpg

The artistic element of cookie making also can be traced back to Medieval Germany.

250px-Lebkuchenscan.jpg

Lebkuchen was crafted into fancy shapes and decorated with sugar. Lebkuchen is a traditional German baked Christmas cookie, somewhat resembling gingerbread.

220px-Motlle_crespellines

During the 17th century, Dutch and German settlers introduced cookie cutters, decorative molds, and festive holiday cookie decorations to the United States.

220px-Christmas_sugar_cookies,_January_2010.jpg

Today cookie decorating traditions continue in many places in the world and include such activities as cookie decorating parties, competitions, creating cookie bouquets and cookie gift baskets, and simply decorating cookies with others can be a fun activity.

Join us at Lexis Byron Bay this Thursday the 11th of December at 11.30am or 2pm for our own version of Christmas Cookie Decorating!

Make sure to sign up at reception!

We spent 5 minutes doing our warm-up and then we were ready to start the first set of

Aussie Beer Tasting🍺! November 15th

Friday we had our favourite activity… Beer tasting!

IMG_E9012

It was a perfect afternoon for a nice cold beer. We had 4 great brews for students to try.

Byron Bay Premium Lager

VB (Victorian Bitter)

Furphy’s Refreshing Ale

Stone & Wood Green Coast Lager

BBBco VB Furphy's Stone and wood

Everyone was given a form with a list of beers we were tasting. After tasting the beer they were asked to guess the flavours, which state the beer is from, alcohol percentage, price, and rating out of 10.

IMG_8797

Guessing the flavours was the hardest task.

Alba was very happy with the afternoon’s activity.

CHEERS!

Lawn Bowls! November 6th

Lawn Bowls, once associated as an ‘old person sport’ has since come into fashion again in Australia!

The sun was shining, and the wind was minimal today at Lexis Byron Bay– two aspects of lawn bowling that are imperative to the sport. The only thing that might make it slightly better would be to have a cold beverage in hand.

We started the game with two balls, each of different colours.

Let the bowling commence!

Celine giving it her best shot!

Who’s ball was closest to the jack???

Kristy using the two handed method😂 while Rony and Di used the classic underarm approach!

Not so easy trying to hit the jack (small black ball) but I think we were all winners in the end! 🤙

img_2282.jpg

Basic Lawn Bowling Rules

Lawn bowling is played by 2 teams of 1-4 players who try to earn points by throwing their “bowls” (balls) up the green so that they land closest to a small target ball called a “Jack.”

Playing Area

Lawn bowls, as it is officially called, is played on a square area usually measuring 120′ on each side. This area, known as a bowling green, is surrounded by a shallow ditch. The surface of the playing area is usually grass, but may be a sand-clay mixture or other artificial surface like carpet.

The green is divided into 6 rectangular “rinks” which allow 6 games to take place at one time. The rinks measure 120′ long by 20′ wide.

256px-Lawn_Bowls

Equipment

Aside from a playing area, the following equipment is needed for lawn bowling:

Bowls (Balls)

These balls vary in size between 4.5″ to 5.5″ in diameter and weigh no more than 3.5 pounds. They are made of a very hard, heavy wood or hard plastic material, and they come in a wide range of colors.

Lawn bowls are not spherical; they bulge out slightly on one side so that they follow a curved path when they are rolled.

The curved path of the ball helps bowlers maneuver their way past other bowls. Bowls can curve about 4′ to the side of the bulge over a distance of 100′. There is a mark on the ball to show the heavier side that has the “bias.”

Bowls&Kitty

Jack

The Jack is the target ball. It’s white or yellow, about 2.5″ in diameter, and weighs about 10 ounces.

jack

Scoring

Once all of the bowls have been played, completing an “end,” scoring is determined in the following manner:

  • A team gets 1 point for each of its balls that is closer to the Jack than the closest opponent’s ball.
  • The team that scores in one end rolls first in the next end.
  • Games are usually played to 21 points.

Pot Plant Painting! October 24th

Yesterday’s activity was Pot Plant Painting! As it was such a beautiful day we decided to sit in the common area downstairs where we had both sun and shade.

img_2033.jpg

We had terracotta pots, a variety of paints, and painting essentials. All the many brushes came in handy.

Hard at work! It was not easy deciding what to paint, but we had a lot of laughs while thinking about it.

Our plants are called Portulaca. They are a type of succulent and will thrive in the Byron Bay sun.

Well done everyone. Fantastic results!

Cooking with Chocolate! 6th September

For our Cooking with Chocolate activity on Friday we made delicious Vegan Brownies!

It was a stunning afternoon and many students had all ready left campus to go enjoy the beach..

But that just meant more brownie for those lucky students who were still around!

We all worked as a team, following the below recipe:

  • 5 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 200g dark chocolate (dairy free if you want to make it vegan)
  • 170g of self-raising flour
  • 3 heaped teaspoons of cocoa powder
  • 180g golden caster sugar
  • 230ml coconut milk
  • 200g raspberries
  • 200g walnuts

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4. Grease a square baking tin (roughly 20cm) with a little oil, then line with greaseproof paper.
  2. Place a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water, making sure the base doesn’t touch the water. Break 150g of chocolate into the bowl and allow it to melt, then set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Meanwhile, sieve the flour and cocoa powder into a large bowl, then stir in the sugar. Stir in the oil, milk and melted chocolate until combined.
  4. Chop and stir in the raspberries, remaining chocolate and most of the nuts reserving a few for the top. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle over the remaining walnuts, then place into the hot oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until cooked on the outside, but still gooey in the middle.
  5. Leave to cool for around 5 minutes, turn out onto a wire cooling rack.

This was a simple recipe to follow that could be easily adapted with different chocolate, nuts or fruit depending on your taste.

After 25 minutes in the oven, our patience had worn thin and we could no longer wait for our chocolate fix. The brownie was still a little bit gooey in the middle, but nobody seemed to mind.  😀

I am all ready looking forward to making these brownies again, they were delicious!
