Hip Hop Class! August 29th

Thursday afternoon we had the incredible Mina Sangsari come and take us for a Hip Hop lesson! Her classes are always high energy and consist of a combination of hip hop, funk and Caribbean styles.

We got straight into a fast paced warm up, with plenty of stretching and jumping.

Then we began learning a hip hop routine. We practiced to a nice slow tune to start with, before trying it out to a really fast beat.

You can catch Mina the Beach Hotel on Monday’s for Reggae Night, where she performs with her dance crew. She also has regular workshops and classes at the Circus Arts School for those who love to dance. Keep an eye on the Lexis Facebook page or come and see me for more information.

We are all ready looking forward to having her back next month for another great class 😀

Happy Student – Monica

Monica has been a student at Lexis Byron Bay for just over 3 months. In this time she has continued to shine! Monica is always warm and patient with new students and brings out the best in everyone around her. She has made many strong friendships during her time here and we will all miss her when she leaves us at the end of this week. Everyone that knows Monica, knows how truly kind and selfless she is.

We asked her a few questions for our ‘Happy Students Blog’ to get to know her even better:

Where are you from?

I’m from Garopaba. It’s a small town in the South of Brazil.

Why did you come to Australia?

I came to Australia because I have friends here and the country’s wealth is quite similar to Brazil. I choose Byron Bay because it’s a small town, like my home town in Brazil and I feel at home here.

What is your favourite thing about Byron Bay?

I love Byron Bay and I don’t know if I can choose just one thing. I’m so lucky because I had a lot of good friends here and also I have made many good friends.

Is your English Improving?

Yes, for sure! When I arrived here I couldn’t speak well, but now I feel much more confident.

What would you say to someone who is considering studying at Lexis Byron Bay?

You must go to Lexis Byron Bay, it is a great opportunity to learn English and make friends from many countries.

What are your plans after you finish studying at Lexis?

I’m going to Thailand to learn about Thai Massage and then I’ll go back to Brazil..

New Starters! August 26th

A very warm welcome to our 5 new students joining us at Lexis Byron Bay today!

Marta is from Spain. In her free time she enjoys learning new sports, searching for new bands to listen to, second hand clothing shopping and watching movies. She studied classical and contemporary dance, but unfortunately had to stop due to an injury. She also studied tourism and hopes in the future to work as an air hostess.

Gabriela is from Brazil. She enjoys going to the gym, doing jujitsu and dancing with her friends. She finished her masters degree in Public Administration and worked in this field for 6 years. Gabriela hopes to improve her English to continue her studies when she returns to Brazil.

Romina is from the German speaking part of Switzerland. In her free time she enjoys skiing and while she is in Byron hopes to learn to surf. She has worked as a medical assistant in a surgery with 6 doctors. Romina’s job was to take blood and analyse it, also take x-rays and make vaccinations. She hopes to improve her English so she can travel alone around Australia and New Zealand.

Masaki is from Japan. He has played baseball from ten years and hopes to learn to surf while he is in Byron Bay. He has chosen to study in Australia because the people are kind, the scenery is beautiful and the weather is lovely. In the future he wants to be an English Teacher in a Japanese Junior High.

Rodrigo is from Brazil. He has transferred schools from Perth. He has a long enrollment with us and we look forward to getting to know him. He is very friendly and we hope he enjoys the Byron Bay way of life.

Pot Plant Painting! 22nd August

Yesterday was the perfect afternoon to Paint Pot Plants!

We soaked up the beautiful Byron Bay sunshine and sat out the front of Room 1. We were able to let our creative minds run wild and paint whatever we liked on our pots.

Most of us decided we would give them away to our friends or host family as a gift. They were looking fantastic!

We had some Alyssium and Snap Dragon seedlings to plant after we had completed our pots that made them look even more spectacular.

It was such a relaxing activity, we could of stayed painting all afternoon.

Table Tennis! August 21st

Wednesday afternoon we had our monthly Table Tennis Tournament. It was a lovely sunny afternoon so we only had a small turn out, but it was still tight competition.

First up was Naoki vs Fabrice. It was a close game, with both competitors being equally as strong. In the end, Fabrice was the first to score 21 points and win the match. Next up was Fernanda vs Johnny..

Fernanda was July’s champion and also the runner up in June. She is a fierce competitor and hard one to beat! This month was no exception and she defeated both Johnny and Fabrice to win herself the 6 pack of beer!

Congratulations Fernanda!!

Keep an eye on next months calendar for a chance to compete for a 6 pack of ice cold beer and win the title of Table Tennis Champion for the month!

It was very sad to say farewell to the wonderful Koko! Many students would have had the pleasure of getting to know Koko over the past 2 years in her role as Homestay Officer. We will all miss her happy smile and kind nature.

Some of you may remember Claire, she was the previous Student Services Officer. It is a pleasure to welcome her back to the team. Claire will be taking over from Koko as the new Homestay Officer.

Naoko, from Japan, is studying with us for 1 week. In her free time she enjoys playing basketball, shopping and relaxing at the beach. She loves to explore and hopes to travel the whole world one day. She currently works as a wedding planner and in restaurants. She wants to improve her English so she can work in resorts in the future.

Hayaki is also from Japan. He enjoys surfing, running, shopping and watching Formula 1 racing. In the future he wants to be a tour guide. He recently visited the USA on holiday and is now very excited to be in Australia to continue to improve his English. He hopes to change his citizenship in the future to be able to live and work here!

Fabrice is from Switzerland. He enjoys playing tennis and going out with friends. He works as a carpenter. He loves this job and hopes to one day build his own home. English is important to him because he likes to travel and meet new people.

Whale Watching

Hey Guys

So some of the students plus myself went whale watching last Sunday…..

Upon arrival we were greeted by the lovely staff that work at the Dive Centre. Before departure our group sat down and watched the safety video, we then put our belongings in the lockers, our cameras in the water proof case, our spray jackets on and away we went.

The ocean was calm and wonderful.. We saw a turtle near Julia Rocks, plenty of sea birds and then the magic started… Massive Humpback whales started spirting water out of their blow hole… We even saw a sharks fin cruising across the surface of the water, which was super cool and rare.

It was such an amazing day, the guides were amazing with such great knowledge of the sea and the wild life that inhabit it. We learnt so much about these big beautiful creatures. a massive thank you to the team at Byron Bay Dive Centre. Thank you for taking care of us, making us laugh with your funny jokes, for educating us on the sea and the animals… It truely was a wonderful experience..

RSPCA CUP CAKE DAY FUNDRAISER!

Friday was the Official RSPCA Cupcake Day! We had so many wonderful students who contributed their time and skills by baking and buying delicious treats to sell. Our goal was to raise a total of $300.00..

We exceeded our target and made a total of $317.10!!

Thank you so much to you all for support!

A great big THANK YOU to Naoki, Monica, Nayumi and Maho who managed to raise an incredible $100.85!! You have won our competition!! <3 <3 <3

Not only did these guys bake delicious treats to sell, Naoki also spent his afternoons playing his guitar and busking on the street. He donated all of that money he raised to the charity! Congratulations guys, I hope you enjoy your Nimbin Tour and Kayak with Dolphins Tour!!! You deserve it!

Gina and Juliette also made an incredible contribution of $59.25 selling their amazing home made Granola and cookies!! Thank you girls and well done 😀

Thank you to Jin Hwa who also contributedwith her beautifully made treats.. Not only were they delicious, they were also beautifully packaged!

All of the money we raised directly helps animals suffering from abuse and neglect. Every year the RSPCA provide food, bedding, medical attention and a second chance at life to over 135,000 stray, surrendered and seized animals!!

I am so proud of everyone who got involved!

Baking Extravaganza for RSPCA Cupcake Day! August 15th

Thursday afternoon we got together in the student kitchen to do some baking in preparation for the official RSPCA Cupcake Day! It has been a delicious week so far! Many students have been participating by baking all sorts of incredible home made treats to sell. All donations will go directly to supporting animals in need!

Thursday afternoon we made Chocolate Chip Cookies (with extra chocolate chips) and Classic Cupcakes with chocolate sauce and butter icing!!!

We followed this nice and easy recipe:

Once we had rolled the cookie mixture into balls and placed on the tray we added even more choc chips to the top before putting them in the oven to bake! 😀

Whilst the cookies were in the oven we got started on making the cupcakes!

We didn’t have a muffin tray to use, so they did come out of the oven a little bit square.. but they still tasted delicious so we didn’t mind. They took around 20 minutes to bake, which gave us plenty of time to prepare the butter icing and chocolate sauce for decorating. We also had sprinkles, coconut and left over chocolate chips to use!

Don’t they look cute? <3 You can try them in today’s bake sale at break and lunch time along with many other yummy treats! Help us reach our goal of $300 by donating generously!!

Agustina is from Argentina. She loves animals, she has four dogs and also a cat. She also loves the beach and the Summer season. She studied business management and found it very interesting. She is so happy to be in Australian as she loves the nature, amazing animals and way of life. She hopes to get a job in Byron and improve her English before returning home.

Everyone showed exceptional creativity when decorating their pizza’s, especially Monica who was still feeling inspired from Boomerang painting and gave her pizza an Aboriginal design 😀

Boomerang Painting! August 8th

Yesterday afternoon’s activity was Boomerang Painting.

The traditional Australian boomerang has been historically used for hunting, as well as sport and entertainment. They are commonly thought of as an Australian iconic symbol, and come in various shapes and sizes with all sorts of beautiful, colourful designs. In Aboriginal culture it is common to see the style of painting where a lot of tiny dots are perfectly painted to create specific shapes. These shapes or symbols often represent things relevant to aboriginal culture.

We had the creative freedom to come up with our own unique designs or follow the more traditional Aboriginal designs. A lot of imagination and colour was used. The finished product looked beautiful.
