This week we say goodbye to three students (Nina, Luis and Guillermo) and see you later to one other (Lucas).
Nina, Guillermo and Luis all graduate from Paul’s Upper Intermediate class after joining it last week. Their previous teachers, Mel and Julia, wrote their reports said that all three were so pleasurable to have in class.
Nina has been at Lexis for just 4 weeks but her speaking ability has improved significantly and she worked really hard at the grammar too, graduating with an ‘A’ grade.
Guillermo also studied for 4 weeks and also leaves with an ‘A’. The whole of the Intermediate class benefitted from his jokes and his humour and he excelled at the speaking and listening tasks.
Finally, Luis has been at Lexis for 20 weeks and made the massive leap from Elementary to Upper Intermediate during this time. His attention to details means that he speaks with a rare accuracy and he always worked hard and participated well in class. His teachers also commented on his respectful, helpful and friendly nature and how much he would be missed by the other students.
We also say ‘see you later’ to Lucas from Intermediate. It’s not really goodbye as Lucas has extended his enrolment so will be coming back in a month. However, to celebrate the end of this 24 enrolment, he graduates with an Intermediate ‘C’ grade certificate and a report from his teachers, who have praised his rise from Elementary to Intermediate and his hard work and positive attitude. We look forward to welcoming Lucas back for another 19 weeks in September.

We are so lucky to have a meditation teacher (Kristy) on our teaching staff and many students really enjoy the opportunity to try this practice for the first time while at Lexis.
Yesterday, the session started with a talk about meditation: what it is, why do it, and the benefits of daily practice.
Kristy says there are 3 parts to meditation:
Relaxing the body (asana)
Breathing (pranayama)
Concentration (mantra)
She guided the meditation by first getting comfortable sitting, then doing a breathing exercise and the mantra ‘OM’. Then they moved on to using the Tibetan singing bowl (https://youtu.be/yEP2YrD-dyY)
Oscar, who joined Kristy’s meditation activity said he had never meditated before but was feeling stressed from having a busy week organising his new life here in Byron, and wanted to learn to meditate because he heard it helps you to relax.
He said that during the meditation, he had a very positive feeling from the singing bowl when it was rung, and could feel the sound radiating throughout his body. Afterwards, he said it was ‘very relaxing’ and would recommend it to others.
For Kristy, teaching a new person the practice of meditation is her most favourite and rewarding thing to do.
She said that most people who join the meditation activity with her have never meditated before and usually think they can’t sit still long enough to try! It’s a big surprise when, after 20-30 mins, not only do they succeed but they find that it’s a nice, peaceful time to be still and reflect on the inner world.

In today’s activity, we made marshmallow balls. These similar to rum balls but without the alcohol. The students enjoyed handling the sticky texture but we think they enjoyed eating them the most!
Recipe below:
RECIPE
Ingredients
– 1 packet of plain Arnott biscuits
– 1 tin of condensed milk
– 25g of cocoa
– 1 packet of marshmallows

This week, we welcome 2 new starters: Claudia from Switzerland and Antonio from Spain.
Claudia is from the Italian part of Switzerland so her mother tongue is Italian but she also speaks fluent French as she studied for 5 years in Lausanne. She is a psychologist and has spent the last year working in a hospital clinic and a prison. She will start a new job in a private clinic on her return to Switzerland. She is in Australia for 12 weeks and at Lexis English for four of those. When she has finished at school she plans to travel up the East Coast and is currently looking for a travel buddy! She loves sport and her favourites are tennis and jogging.
Antonio is from Southern Spain and he is mad about surfing. He joins us on our English and Surfing programme and he is very excited to be surfing in Byron Bay. His dream is to teach surfing in Spain and, for this, he will need English as his students will come from many different countries. Antonio has lots of other interests too. He likes reading, writing, skating, comic books and poetry. Antonio has worked in Thailand as a Spanish teacher and will be visiting family in Hong Kong after he has finished his time in Australia.

On Thursday, the Hiroshima HS students and I headed out to Ballina to spend the morning at Emmanuel Anglican College. After a quick stop for a photo opportunity at the famous Big Prawn, we arrived at the school and were taken to the library for a very warm welcome (in Japanese and English). Then, all the students were paired off with a buddy of the same age and sex, whom they would stay with for the rest of the morning.
The Hiroshima HS students then went with their buddies for their first period, which was an elective class. Some students were in Drama, some Music, some PE and some IT.
After the break time, it was time for the Hiroshima HS students to deliver their presentations to Emmanuel Anglican College’s Japanese class. Some of these students are actually going to Hiroshima later this month so they were very interested in learning more about the culture.
Then it was time to go home. The buddies came and waved us off at the gates and there were lots of photographs and exchange of contact details.
The next morning, the Hiroshima HS students wrote thank you letters to Emmanuel Anglican College. Here are some of the things they wrote:
“I really liked talking with the students. Buddy is very gentle and fun to talk to.” Haruna
“I really liked the music class and I enjoyed talking with my buddy.” Ai
“I really liked talking with the people in your school. I enjoyed playing the instrument.” Itsumi
“Thank you for listening to our presentation. I really liked the people.” Nonoko
“Students who are in your school are very funny. I enjoyed my time with you.” Mikio
“Dancing with students was very fun! We made good memories.” Yuno
“I really liked talking. I enjoyed playing on the computer.” Ryuta
“I played football yesterday. It was fun. Your school students were very kind, interesting and very friendly.” Fuki
“I really liked talking with the students. I want to come to Australia again.” Ryo
“Thank you for listening to us and taking pictures together. I never forget you.” Rei
