Congratulations and farewell to our three students graduating from Lexis Byron Bay today!
Keigo, from Japan, graduates from Michelle’s Pre-Intermediate class. He has improved in all areas of his English since starting with us in Elementary 12 weeks ago. He has been a hard working student who interacted well with others. We wish you the very best for the future Keigo!
Chihiro, from Japan, graduates from Mel and Julia’s Intermediate class. It has been an absolute joy having her here at Lexis, with her positivity and bright smile! Her knowledge of grammar is excellent and it is no surprise she is graduating with an A! She has made lots of friends in her short time here and will be missed very much!
Noriyuki, from Japan, graduates from our Elementary class. His teacher Kristy says she has enjoyed teaching him and likes that he always thinks carefully about things and asks questions. Enjoy using your new language and good luck with your next adventure Nori!
Yesterday for our Brazilian Cooking activity we made the traditional Brazilian dessert Brigadeiros!
It’s very simple to make; just mix 1 tin of sweetened condensed milk, 15 grams of butter and 3 table spoons of cocoa powder over medium heat until thickened.
Once they the mixture had cooled down we covered our hands in butter (stops it sticking!) and rolled it into balls!
Next we covered the balls in candy sprinkles, granulated nuts, shredded coconut and chocolate sprinkles!
I’ve given up chocolate for the month (5 days to go!!) and this was by far the hardest day! Everyone else was able to enjoy them though and said they were delicious!

We recently had three wonderful TAP students here with us at Lexis Byron!
The Teen Activity Programme combines English classes with surf lessons, so they really get the best out of their Byron experience!
Before they left the boys kindly answered a few questions for us…
What’s the best thing about Lexis Byron?
Sacha: I liked that it’s a small campus, so everyone knows eachother. It’s really easy to talk to people and make new friends.
Theo: It was a really good combination of study, surf and free time! I also really loved my homestay.
Alex: Improving my English! I also really enjoyed the table tennis (Alex came a close second in our July Tournament!).
Tell me a bit about your teacher and lessons…
Sacha: All the teachers are really nice. They encourage you to participate and mingle with other students. We played lots of really good games that got us to mix together and get to know eachother.
Theo: I loved my teachers, Paul and Michelle. We would always do activities in class that would get us interacting and speaking with other students.
Alex: My teacher Claudia was very useful and interesting, because of her lessons I am sure I have improved my English.
How were your surf lessons and instructors?
Sacha: Really good! Because Theo and I already knew how to surf Let’s Go Surfing gave us private lessons instead of us having to go with the group. They would always take us to where the good waves were, they really knew the best spots each day. They were very kind, friendly, fun and gave good advice. We often had dolphins really close to us when we were surfing, which was an amazing experience.
Theo: Great! The instructors were really good and helped us improve. They always checked where the best waves were first and took us to so many different surf spots over the 4 weeks; Broken Head, Suffolk Park, The Pass, The Wreck, Belongil and Lennox!
Alex: My surf lessons were awesome, even though the waves weren’t really big every day. Dylan and the other instructors do an amazing job.
Did you enjoy your homestay experience?
Sacha: Yes, they made me feel welcome and gave me good advice on Byron (Sacha’s homestay father Mark even took him to see how surfboards are made!). I felt well looked after but sometimes wished I was with a family with another teenager, like Theo was.
Theo: I loved it! My host family had 2 boys similar age to me (14 and 17) so I spent every evening with them. They were also the same surfing level as me so we would go out surfing together.
Alex: Awesome! What a family! The Monrows are the nicest people I have met here.
What was your favourite thing to do in Byron when you weren’t studying or surfing?
Sacha: Finding good places to eat; there’s lots of reasonably priced places for food. There’s also lots of shops! The lighthouse is really nice, we saw a wallaby there; I always appreciated these moments.
Theo: Hang out with my host family.
Alex: Ride my bicycle in town, or to the top of Byron to see the view, and sometimes do some shopping.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about coming to Byron to study?
Sacha: Go and do it! It’s a really good experience. It’s a small town so makes a change from being in the city. All the people are really kind. There’s good food and surf to enjoy!
Theo: It’s a really good school for surfing and studying. Byron is a great location for trying out lots of different surf spots.
Alex: Everyone has to do what they want to do! Byron is best for surfing, but studying at Lexis was still very useful!
Miyu, from Japan, joined us at Lexis Byron back in October last year. She started in our Pre-Intermediate class but after completing our Cambridge First Course with much-loved teacher Paul she finished at an Upper Intermediate level. It has been a joy having her here at Lexis. She has been a kind, respectful, hardworking student who has made lots of friends during her time in Byron. Her teachers all say she was a pleasure to teach and I have loved getting to know her during the activities and her visits to reception!
Before she left Byron she kindly answered some questions for us…
Why did you choose Byron Bay for your studies?
I came to Byron because it is very different to my experience of living in a big city in Japan (Miyu lives in Kobe). I was really excited to try something new and experience a different way of life. I wanted to be able to live my life my way without any expectations.
Why were you wanting to improve your English?
I had always wanted to study English, but the Japanese education system doesn’t put much emphasis on teaching it. I decided to come here and study so I could have an adventure at the same time as improving my English! I know having a higher level of English will help me find work and will also help me with travelling.
What’s the best thing about Byron?
The people! The people are all so nice. I have been working as a massage therapist here and everyone is very friendly. Any time I’ve ever needed help there has always been someone happy to help me. I also love the nature in Byron and the amazing beauty of the ocean!
What’s your advice for anyone coming to study English abroad?
Don’t hang out with students from your nationality. Always try to speak English. I don’t have any Japanese friends here because I wanted to speak as much English as possible. I made mostly Spanish, Brazilian and Australian friends. I’m even travelling to Spain when I leave Australia so I can meet up with the Spanish friends I made at Lexis!
With her Lexis friends!
Tell us about your experience at Lexis…
Lexis was amazing! I really appreciate coming here and all the help I got from everyone. The teachers are always helping and finding creative ways for you to improve your English. I loved all of my teachers. They were all fun and really caring. The admin staff are all super friendly and always there for you. My English has improved so much. I started in Pre-intermediate and finished at an Upper-intermediate level.
With her Cambridge First Class
Her last day at Lexis!
What are your recommendations for anyone coming to study at Lexis?
Get involved in the free activities! I loved all the activities at Lexis; it was great to having them every day and encouraging students from different classes/levels to all communicate together. I really enjoyed the activities with students from other schools, like the soccer competition, as they were really useful for meeting new people.
Also, stick to the English ONLY Policy! I really loved this rule because it helped me make a lot of international friends. It was really hard at the beginning but after a while it became natural and I feel I really benefited from it. I made many friends in my time at Lexis and am really grateful for that <3
At our Lexis Sweet Exchange Charity Bake Sale!
Cheese and Wine Tasting activity!
To celebrate it being Friday we treated the students to free pizzas and an afternoon of games!
We had a selection of games for students to choose from, including Pictionary, Jenga and Twister, but everyone just wanted a turn on the Wii!
Four at a time the students competed against eachother at Mario Karts.
There was a lot of shouting, laughter and excitement during the races!
I shamefully lost both my games, so will be spending the next month practicing!
Lat Thursday we had a fun afternoon making Dream Catchers!
We watched a video to get us started (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vmtkc7FOWLw&t=3s)
Then got to work making our own!!
We had lots of different fabrics for the students to choose from, beads and shells for the center and feathers to hang from the bottom!
The end results were all beautifully unique and a great memento of their time in Byron!
Congratulations and farewell to our five students graduating from Lexis Byron Bay today!
Teresa, from Spain, graduates from our Pre-Intermediate class. Her teacher, Paul, says she has a fantastic attitude to learning and always worked hard to understand new grammar. Her writing and speaking have improved a great deal during her 4 weeks here. You should be very proud of your achievements Teresa! Best wishes for the future!
Juliana, from Brazil, graduates from Mel’s Intermediate class. She is a lovely student who is always friendly, positive and smiling. She has made lots of friends in her short time here, who will all miss her jokes and sense of humour! She worked hard in class and this paid off with her graduating with a grade A! Good luck with the next chapter of your life in Australia, we hope to see you again soon!
Shiho, from Japan, graduates from Mel’s Intermediate class. It has been an absolute joy having her here at Lexis. She has a lovely personality and has made lots of friends during her 16 weeks here. She has progressed in all areas and it has been great to watch her confidence with speaking grow. Congratulations on your well deserved A grade! We will miss you and your beautiful smile!

The best thing to do is go round all the bars, restaurants, cafes, hostels and hotels handing out your resume. If you need help writing your resume you can go to GIL any day between 2 and 3pm; in room 8 every day except Mondays when it’s in room 7. Then email to me: adminbyron@lexisenglish.com and I can print 10 free copies every day for you 🙂

Welcome to our two new students joining us at Lexis Byron Bay this week!
Mary-Sheila is from the German speaking part of Switzerland. Her hobbies include skiing, climbing, volleyball and shopping! She works as a pharmacy assistant and also in her grandma’s restaurant. She is looking forward to improving her English during her 20 weeks here at Lexis Byron!
DaEun, from Korea, will go by her English name Sarah during her 24 weeks here at Lexis! Her hobbies include reading and eating at famous restaurants! She works as ground staff at Daegu Airport. She chose to study in Byron Bay as there are not many Koreans here and she wants to meet people from all different countries and be able to practice her English!
Congratulations and farewell to our six students graduating from Lexis Byron Bay today!
Patrick, from Switzerland, graduates from Paul’s Pre-Intermediate class having progressed to this level from Elementary. Even though Patrick was only with us for a few weeks, he made huge progress in his English abilities and always enjoyed joining in with class discussions and activities. We wish Patrick happy travels and the best of luck for the future.
Koki, from Japan, graduates from Paul’s Pre-Intermediate class. Although he was only at Lexis for 4 weeks, Koki’s speaking has really improved and he’s all set to continue on his working holiday adventure. His teachers commented that he was always keen to volunteer in class and should have no problems travelling and finding work.
Theo, from Reunion Island, graduates from Paul’s Pre-Intermediate class. Theo has been on our TAP English and Surfing Program for the past four weeks, so has been having surf lessons as well as English. We’ve really enjoyed having both Sacha and Theo in the school as they have been such polite and keen students and passionate surfers. Theo’s teachers praised his English level achieved and his participation in class.
Sacha, also from Reunion Island and travelling with Theo, graduates from Mel’s Intermediate class. His teachers Mel and Julia commented on what a pleasure it was to have him and how much they’ve enjoyed his jokes and good humour. Even though only 16 Sacha connected and participated well with his classmates and was great at giving his opinion and discussing topics in class.
Christoph, from Germany, graduates from Mel’s Intermediate class. Christoph was on an Adult English and Surfing Program so also had surf lessons most afternoons. We have enjoyed having Christoph in the school as he is always smiling and so easy-going. His teachers commented on how mature he is for his age and what a respectful and engaging personality he is. His English has also improved steadily and he progressed from Pre-Intermediate to Intermediate during his time at the school.
Kana, from Japan, graduates from Kristy’s Elementary class. Kristy told me how much she’s enjoyed teaching Kana and watching her improve over the last three months. She said that when Kana started she found it difficult to make a sentence but now they were enjoying whole conversations. Good luck, Kana, with your next adventure.
We’re so lucky to have so many knowledgeable and passionate teachers and the school and Kristy is definitely one of them. Those of you that have been lucky enough to have her as your teacher will know all about her passion for grammar and pronunciation and will also agree what a kind and patient teacher she is.
Find out a bit more about her below:

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TEACHER?
I became a teacher after I went to art school to pay off my student loan. When I started, I loved it! I taught Art and Design for 2 years at a high school then wanted to teach young children. I really enjoyed having fun with 10-year-old kids. They made me laugh a lot and I worked hard to help them learn. I thought, ‘I would do this job for free.’ It’s a very rewarding job. Teaching English has been a great way to travel and work. I really love watching my students become more confident and enjoy speaking a new language.
WHAT IS YOUR ENGLISH LEARNING TIP?
Write a diary entry and listen to English music. Take a notebook with you when you’re out and record new vocab and phrases you hear.

Today’s activity was Sushi Making, which is always popular here at Lexis Byron!
I printed out instructions for how to make the rice, but luckily some of our lovely Japanese students stepped in to tell us how it’s really done!
Juliana, from Brazil, also told us about how they make their sushi in Brazil…sweet! Lots of us were queuing up to try her strawberry filled rolls!
Everyone else had more savoury options to fill theirs! These included tuna, salmon, cucumber, carrot, cream cheese, cucumber and avocado!
We all had a fun afternoon and nice tasty treat at the end!
Thank you to our Japanese teachers 🙂
Yesterday we played a friendly Soccer Match at the Sports Fields with another of Byron’s local schools!
Our soccer games are always great fun,
and we have some very talented players here at Lexis!
It’s Whale season here in Byron Bay!!!
Between May and November each year humpback whales migrate from their cold Antarctic feeding grounds to the warmer waters of Queensland, Australia to breed!
We are lucky enough that Byron Bay is one of the best places in Australia to spot these magnificent creatures!
This year there is estimated to be a record breaking 30,000 passing by, meaning you are pretty much guaranteed to spot them!
The best way to see them up close is by booking onto one of the Whale Watching boat trips, which can be arranged for you by Sarah from Happy Travels! See her on the travel desk in the student lounge on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 12-3pm.
Myself and Koko went last year (and plan to go again this year!) and had a fantastic time!
Here’s some of the pictures and a video from our trips 🙂
When I went I also saw a seal (very rare for Byron but there’s one that occasionally visits the Bay!), turtles and heaps of dolphins!
Another special experience you could do is to kayak with them!! This can also be booked through Sarah. You are guaranteed to see dolphins (or get to go again for free!) and have a very high chance of see whales too!
