Yesterday, ex-student Juliana came in to say that she would shortly be leaving Byron Bay. She told me that there had been tears already and she was sure that there would be more to come and that Lexis was a huge part of what made her Byron experience so memorable. I asked her if she had time to do a quick “Happy Student” profile and share some pictures of her enjoying Byron Bay and she was delighted to accept.
Why Byron Bay?
It’s simple. My brother used to live here and he said Byron was the right place for me. He said “you belong to Byron,” and he was right.
And did it live up to your expectations?
Absolutely! It’s the lifestyle that I always wanted to have.
I’ve always tried to be true to myself but it’s harder when you in a rush going to work and surrounded by friends and family who are getting on with their everyday life. It’s hard to open your mind in that environment. Travelling is such a huge experience because your away from the norm, so you want to experience everything fully, you try to live in the moment and relish every day. And Byron Bay is the perfect place for that.
How was Learning English at Lexis?
It was great because the classes are so dynamic and every single sense is involved. The lessons are structured by with lots of scope for creativity. My teachers were always trying to find topics that interested us and encouraged us to talk.
And it’s not just the teachers who are so committed but the office staff as well. If I could say one thing about Lexis Byron Bay it’s that your signature is your staff. Just keep doing what you’ve been doing because it’s clear that you really care and aren’t just doing a job.
You studied for (and passed) the Cambridge Advanced Exam. How was this?
I think this was my favourite time. Being in a classroom with the same people every day for 3 months means you forge such strong connections. And my classmates and I all worked together to motivate each other and help with our individual weaknesses. I’m actually going to Switzerland to visit all my Swiss classmates in August. I’m going to drive around to all the different cities and say hi! We became like a family so I’m really looking forward to it.
Also, my teacher Josie, is the just most amazing human being and she has such good strategies to encourage students to correct their weaknesses. She really cares about us as individuals and is really personal in her feedback and advice.
If you could give one piece of advice for someone coming to study at Lexis Byron Bay, what would it be?
Try not to hang out with people from your own country. That’s the reason my English improved so much in such a short time. All my friends are locals or from other countries. Making friends with locals also means that you get to hang out with them doing Byron activities such as surfing, kayaking and stand up paddleboarding, and discover the real Byron and neighbouring places like Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby.
