You will provide housekeeping and cleaning for our various accommodation types including cleaning common areas to ensure the presentation of the property is in accordance with the high standards of our Discovery brand. You will be someone able to prioritise your workload to achieve daily outcomes whilst also understanding the bigger picture for the rest of the team. You will bring to the role: – Fantastic customer service. – Proven and demonstrated experience in a commercial housekeeping role. – A willingness to work with the housekeeping team, but also able to work autonomously. – Excellent time management skills. – Flexible attitude to hours, including weekends and on short notice. – A current valid drivers licence. PART TIME NANNY
This is a somewhat last-minute ad, as we just found out our caretaker has other obligations in June. We are Americans in Byron for a writing holiday looking for a conscientious, fun, loving nanny to look after our 11-month-old son on a part-time basis in June 2018 (until about July 4). He is a happy, fun-loving boy, and just needs lots of play-time, walks, naps, and bottles… and he’s mostly set. We will be staying in Suffolk Park, just a few blocks from the beach. You would need to be able to get to and from our house, but wouldn’t need a car for the actual position. We are looking for someone who can be flexible with hours — some days 9-4pm, others 12-5pm, about four days per week — and some evenings for babysitting would be a plus (although he’s sleeping at this time, so you just need to listen for him!). The rate would be about 21/hour. Please email with your experience and mobile number if interested and I will call you in the next couple days. Thanks much!
COOK / CHEF
Busy Byron Bay cafe is looking for a full time chef/cook. Must have a strong background in cooking breakfast and working grill and cold larder. Shifts are mainly days with one night per week. We are looking for someone who can commit to at least six months of employment and can legally work in Australia.

You will bring to the role: – Fantastic customer service. – Fit and energetic. – A great attitude and willingness to learn. – Experience in accommodation or commercial maintenance. – Previous trade employment or handyman skills, plus gardening/groundskeeping knowledge (and you love doing it!). – Knowledge of correct manual handling techniques and WHS awareness. – Excellent time management skills. – Flexible attitude to hours, including weekends and on short notice. – Pool maintenance experience would be advantageous. – A current valid (manual) driver’s licence is essential. Remuneration: A competitive rate will be negotiated commensurate with skills and experience. How to Apply: Please visit the careers page on www.discoveryparks.com.au or via the link below. Welcome to our three new starters joining us at Lexis Byron Bay today!
Eleonora is from Rome, Italy. She is an active person who loves sports and meeting new people. She works as a bartender and needs to speak fluent English for her job. She joins her brother who is already here in Australia and his girlfriend Carla who is also at Lexis with us! She is really excited for this new adventure and experiencing the Australian way of life!
Asa (Asana) is from Japan. She likes yoga and surfing, which are two of the main reasons she chose Byron Bay for her studies! She wants to improve her English so she can find a good job in Tokyo when she returns to Japan!
Catalina is from Chile. She completed her Masters in Physiotherapy and works as a Spa Therapist in a hotel. It has always been her dream to come to Australia and also to speak fluent English, so she decided to combine the two and come to Lexis Byron! She is very happy to be here, describing it as a beautiful country with amazing scenery and friendly people!
Congratulations and farewell to our nine students graduating from Lexis Byron Bay today!
Murilo, from Brazil, graduates from Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class. He was an excellent member of the class, who always participated well in discussions and during activities. He’s improved his English all areas during his time in Byron and we are sure will continue to do so. Good luck for all you do in the future Murilo!
Joao, from Brazil, graduates from Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class. Claudia says it was great having him in class and he always interacted well with other students during activities. All of his hard work and efforts have paid off, with him progressing from Pre-Intermediate to Upper Intermediate. Best wishes for the future Joao!
Victhor, from Brazil, graduates from Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class. He is a motivated student who’s English has improved a great deal in his 14 weeks at Lexis. His enthusiasm contributed to a positive class atmosphere and will be very much missed next week. We wish you the very best for the future Victhor!
Patrick, from Switzerland, graduates from Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class. Claudia has really enjoyed having him in class, describing him as an interested and motivated student. His writing is particularly good and a talent we think he should pursue! The whole class enjoyed his humour and wit and will be missing him next week!
Roman, from Switzerland, graduates from Mel’s Intermediate class. It has been an absolute pleasure having him here at Lexis. He has excellent speaking and listening skills and was always great to have a conversation with. His jokes and good humour were always very much appreciated in class and out of class activities. We hope you enjoyed your time in Byron as much as we loved having you here!

Her understanding of grammar, speaking and writing has improved a great deal and she graduates with a well deserved A! Good luck with your future studies Lizzy!
We had a creative afternoon making beautiful dream catchers!
First we watched a video from Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vmtkc7FOWLw&t=3s) demonstrating how to make them, and then it was our turn to give it a go!
It’s quite tricky at first but easy once you get going!
Once our nets were complete we added shells and beads to the centre and hung feathers from the bottom to make them even prettier!
Yesterday we played Soccer against another of Byron’s local schools!
We lost some of our sign ups due to rain, but still had eleven determined players who weren’t going to be put off by a little bit of bad weather!
After the first 20 minutes the blue skies were back and we were even treated to a beautiful rainbow!
Our team was made up of 8 boys and 3 girls and they all played amazingly together, with great spirit and teamwork.
The students continued to play even as it got dark and the rain came back! Real competitors!!
Well done to Fabio, Joao, Jeff, Cristiano, Sevie, Alex, Benoit, Gabriela, Patrick, Laurene and Helena for securing Lexis a 4 – 1 win!!!
GO TEAM LEXIS!!

There was lots of excitement and friendly competitiveness for yesterday’s Table Tennis Tournament! We had 18 players competing for May’s champion title, including Laurine representing for the ladies!! We also had a great number of students come along to spectate and cheer on their classmates!
Everyone was paired off at random and played first to 11, with the winner staying on for the next round.
Results from the first round:
Jeff VS Sevi: JEFF
Yves VS Roman: YVES
Alex VS Laurine: ALEX
Murilo VS Joao: JOAO
Ben VS ANTHONY: BEN
Benoit VS Victhor: BENOIT
Fabio VS Oscar: OSCAR
Patrick VS Andre: ANDRE
Cristiano VS Rafael: CRISTIANO
We had an uneven amount of players for the next round so one person was picked from the pot to progress straight through to the semi finals, this lucky person being BENOIT!
Results from the second round:
Jeff VS Joao: JOAO
Cristiano VS Yves: CRISTIANO
Ben VS Oscar: BEN
Alex VS Andre: ALEX
With Benoit going straight through we again had an uneven number of players for the semi finals, so at Oscar’s suggestion this time we picked a name from the players who were out the competition to give them a second chance at the glory! The name picked from the pot was…OSCAR!! Oscar then managed to beat last month’s champion, Ben, to get a place in the final!
Results from the semi finals:
Oscar VS Ben: OSCAR
Alex VS Cristiano: ALEX
Benoit VS Joao: BENOIT
The three finalists then all played against each other, with the below results:
Oscar VS Benoit: OSCAR
Oscar VS Alex: ALEX
Alex VS Benoit: ALEX
Making ALEX our May Table Tennis Champion!!!!
Congratulations Alex, enjoy your beers!!
Yesterday we had a lovely afternoon painting boomerangs!
I showed the students some handouts with symbols typically used by aboriginals along with their meanings, as well as some examples and templates for them to use,
all the students got inventive though and came up with their own unique designs!
I was particularly impressed with Hansoo’s koala,
and Suzie, who used a pointed accessory to carve a pattern into the paint.
Shiho’s was the most authentic,
But all the students designs were beautiful and creative <3
and they now all have a great souvenir to take home from Australia!

We are looking for an experienced part-time nanny for our sweet 11-month-old son. He is happy and relatively easy, and just needs someone fun and engaging for play, naps, and walks. We are Americans staying in the Byron area for June and part of July. Hours and days are flexible, but we’re hoping for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 9-4pm, or thereabouts. We have a large house in Suffolk Park, so you would need transport to and from (although we have a car and could potentially drive you home after work). Some evenings would be a plus, too. Please email me for info. Thanks!

It’s so lovely to be back at Lexis Byron after a little trip back to the UK! I feel extremely lucky to have a job that I can look forward to coming back to, this is all thanks to the wonderful staff and students I get to spend my days with 🙂
Today at Coffee Club Judit, one of our Spanish students, shared two games with us.
I won’t go into details as it involves everyone having to work something out, and we can hopefully play it again one day with some new students! Let’s just say lots of fun was had, especially when most of the group had figured out the pattern!!
Join me next week for more games, coffee and Tim Tams!!
Welcome to our two new students joining us at Lexis Byron Bay today!
Elmedina lives in Switzerland, but is originally from Montenegro. She used to work in a laboratory but is now studying to become a primary school teacher. In her free time she likes to draw and snowboard in the winter. In the future she would like to do a lot of travelling, and improving her English will help her with this!
Maho is from Japan. She is currently studying at University, majoring in architecture. She enjoys learning new languages and at the moment is learning Chinese and is now here with us to improve her English! She is looking forward to experiencing the Australian culture and meeting new people!
Today, we had our every popular beer-tasting activity, led by Josie as Claire is on holiday.
Claire had selected the beers before she left:
All the students got a small taste of each one with Francesco and Rodrigo acting as bartenders.
Generally, the most popular beers were the lager and the dark ale but all were enjoyed and everyone agreed it was a great start to a Friday evening.

This week, we only farewell one student: Mariela Belen Baeza Retamal from Chile.
Mariela has been at Lexis for 18 weeks, starting in Pre-Intermediate and finishing as a solid Intermediate student. Her speaking and writing skills, in particular, have dramatically improved.
Mariela’s teachers enjoyed having her in the class as she always participated well and particularly enjoyed group discussions. Now, Mariela plans to travel a bit before applying for a working holiday visa to come back to Australia.
Hopefully, we’ll see you back in Byron sometime soon, Mariela.

It’s a stunning, cloudless 26 degrees today in Byron Bay; perfect weather for a game of volleyball. I’m not sure who won but our teacher, Claudia, played the whole match and said she had a fantastic time.

For his writing task this week our Upper Intermediate student, Patrick, wrote this outstandingly good article. Indeed it was so good, we decided to share it below (completely unedited).
Although I’m only 22 years old, I have big plans for my future. At least when it comes to traveling. And after I have improved my English here in Byron Bay, I think my adventure can start.
Lets’s start with a little flashback. The whole «I love to travel» – story started last summer. I just wanted to have some holidays in Spain, but none of my friends had the time or the money to join me. The solution? Going alone! The best decision ever. Despite the fact, that I had no idea how to book a flight or enter the right airplane, I was very proud of myself. I couldn’t believe, that I did this all on my own.
When I arrived in my hotel room in Barcelona, I sat on my bed and was thinking «What are you doing here alone?» On the other hand I was «Amazing, I can do whatever I want to do.» So, it was my decision in which restaurant I will have dinner, if I will go to the beach or rather have a little shopping day. Nobody that could interrupt me.
By this little solo trip I got inspired to go to Australia. Yes, I know it sounds weird but I used to be very shy and I thought if I travel alone in a foreign country that I will become more confident and learn more about myself.
Now I’m sitting here and thinking about how the next 365 days of my life will look like. I’m young, I worked for five years and still live with my parents, what means it’s easy to save some money. Because of that, I think it’s the perfect time to travel the world. From A like Australia across the world, back to Z like my hometown Zurich.
As soon as I finish the school here, I will sit on the back of a kangaroo and will explore the east coast of Australia as well as New Zealand. The Opera House, all the animals, the nature, so many things I would love to see.
After that, my trip is going to Asia. I will take a flight to Bangkok, going to walk around the streets, eat some roasted grasshoppers and get drunk in a casino. In the Philippines, I’m getting a tan at a beautiful beach and in Tokyo, I will learn how to make sushi.
Time to say goodbye to the Asian culture and hola South America. And to be honest, I think I have to buy a pepper spray, because people there seems to be very criminal. It sounds a bit mean, I know, but it’s just what people told me. Anyway, I love the heat, the hotter the better. While everyone is looking for a place in the shadow I will lay in the burning sun in Mexico while I’m eating tacos. Later in Brazil I’m taking some samba lessons, so I can impress my friends when I’m back home.
Then finally, to test my knowledge in English, off to the USA. There are so many amazing cities I’d love to see. Las Vegas, Florida, Chicago or Miami, the list is long. Not to forget, taking a helicopter flight in New York City to see the statue of liberty from above.
So, last but not least, back to Europe. The big capital cities are for waiting for me. Getting high in Amsterdam, eating a schnitzel in Vienna, drinking a cup of tea in London or taking selfies with the Eiffel tower in the background. Europe has a lot to offer.
Now, one year later and after all these his beautiful experiences, the time has come to go back home. Au revoir beautiful France hello Switzerland.

Have you ever thought of using sweet potatoes in baking? No, neither had we but our teacher, Mel, had a recipe she was super keen to share. So, with Claire away on holiday, this week’s cooking activity was “Baking Healthy Brownies” with Mel.
You can find the full recipe below. And the verdict? Absolutely delicious!

From left to right: Keigo, Severin, Laurene, Maria and Isabel
Today we welcome 5 fabulous new starters:
Maria is from Argentina and is staying with her friend here in Australia. She wants to improve her English because it’s important to get a good job in Argentina. Maria is a university student back home and her hobbies include cooking Asado and playing volleyball. If possible, Maria would like to stay longer in Australia and work towards to the Cambridge First.
Laurene from France is also a university student. She is from France but is currently studying medicine in Switzerland. She will spend 4 weeks at Lexis Byron Bay before travelling up the East Coast to Cairns. Her English is already good, even though she claims to have learned mostly from watching TV series, so she will join the Upper Intermediate class to work on accuracy. Her hobbies include water activities, hanging out with friends and music.
Isabel is from Zurich in Switzerland. She has already been travelling in Australia with her boyfriend and now he has gone home she has come to Byron Bay to study. She needs better English for her studies in Information Technology, which she will begin on her return to Switzerland. She likes reading, walking and playing the guitar amongst other things.
Keigo from Japan is here on a Working Holiday Visa, which means that he hopes to live and work in Australia for the next year. In Japan, he managed a Lacoste store so he’d like to do something similar if he can improve his English enough. In his free time, Keigo likes doing physical activities like dancing, double dutch and skating.
Severin (Sevi) from Switzerland is 27. He trained as an architect and worked for several small companies before beginning his travels in January. He has been working his way around South East Asia and New Zealand and has chosen to stop in Byron Bay for a while to ‘take a rest’. He’s looking to improve the accuracy of his English and also keen to meet other students who might be interested in travelling with him at the end of his course.

On Friday afternoon, our CAE teacher, Josie, took a group of students for a free bodyboarding session.
After some brief instruction from the team at Let’s go Surfing (who also provided all the equipment), the students hit the water. It was a perfect day for it; the sun was shining and the waves were big enough to power the students to shore without being too overwhelming.
The students all had a great time and were even reluctant to leave the water at 4pm when it was time to return the boards.
