Today at Coffee Club we swapped Tim Tams for Hot cross buns to celebrate Easter!
Hot cross buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday in Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and some parts of the Americas. The buns mark the end of Lent and different parts of the hot cross bun have a certain meaning; including the cross representing the crucifixion of Jesus, and the spices signifying the spices used to preserve him at his burial.
They are typically a spiced sweet bun but we also had some chocolate ones which we enjoyed warmed up with butter 🙂

This month Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class took their lesson to the kitchen!
They each had to choose a super food (a food rich in nutrients), research it’s facts and history and then use it in a recipe!
Interestingly chocolate is considered a super food! Brilliant news 🙂 Research shows that dark chocolate especially can lower blood pressure!
Everyone then got to try each others dishes as the creator explained the information they had gathered about their super food!

Hans (HanSoo) is from Korea. His main passion is playing the guitar and he is a member of his school’s band. He is also interested in cycling and would like to try surfing whilst in Byron. He wants to improve his English so he can better his life and travel the world! He is currently studying Medical Engineering in Korea but is taking a year long break to explore the world!
Jeferson is from Brazil. He enjoys sports, particularly soccer, swimming and running. Whilst in Australia he would like to learn to surf; he has definitely picked the best location for this! He studied Computer Science and has worked within this industry for the past 15 years. He chose Australia for his studies because of the warm weather, beaches and laid back lifestyle!
Victor (Vitezslav) is from the Czech Republic. His hobbies include running, working out and cycling. He studied to be a blacksmith and has worked as a laborer for the past four years. He will study at Lexis Byron for the next 9 months to improve his English so he is able to move to England to work. He is looking forward to exploring this country and learning to surf!
Martin is from Spain. His main interests are sports and travel. He also enjoys reading, listening to music, watching movies and going out with friends. He will study with us for the next 12 weeks to further his English and decide what he would like to do with his future!
Shoto is from Japan. His main hobby is playing the guitar. He choose Byron Bay for his studies as he has heard great things about this beautiful town! He will study with us for 3 months and then work on a farm picking fruits. After he would like to get a car so he can travel around Australia!
Esther is from Spain. Her biggest love is to travel and meet new people. She also enjoys surfing, reading, sports and good food! She has a Bachelor Degree from the University of Barcelona and is a trained teacher. It has always been her dream to come to Australia so she is very excited to be here! In the future she would like to work on yachts with her boyfriend and English is important for this, so she will study with Lexis Byron for the next 6 months to improve this!

Olmo has been working with Lexis for over a year and a half, giving our students a opportunity to try slacklining!

The students had five different beers to try: India Pale Ale (Amanda), Tropical IPA (Sierra Nevada), Dark Ale (White Rabbit), Lager (Red Stripe) and a Pale Ale (Colonial).
They had a taste of each and then had to guess the flavours, country/state, alcohol percentage and price!
Everyone was very merry by the end , just as they should be on a Friday evening!!

We are in need of an experienced au-pair/live-in Nanny to start on the 29th March in Byron Bay until the 3rd April. Mahiro, from Japan, graduates from Michelle’s Pre-Intermediate class. She has worked extremely hard and progressed from Elementary to graduating Pre-Intermediate with an A after just 3 weeks! She brought great enthusiasm and a brilliant attitude to each class and had an excellent understanding of the grammar and vocabulary. She was an asset to the class and we wish she could have stayed with us longer! We hope to see you again one day Mahiro!
Akari, from Japan, graduates from Michelle’s Pre-Intermediate class. In just 3 weeks she has progressed from our Elementary class to graduating Pre-Intermediate with an A! She always participated well in class and worked extremely well with her peers. Michelle described her as having a beautiful and graceful approach to learning. We wish you the very best for the future Akari!
Rocio, from Spain, graduates from our Elementary class. Her teacher Kristy really likes having her smiley attitude and positivity in class. Her English has improved in all areas and we are sure will continue to do so when she returns to us in 5 weeks! Enjoy your break Rocio and we look forward to seeing you again next month!

Anthony, from France, graduates from Claudia’s Upper Intermediate class. It is an absolute joy having him at Lexis; he is a positive, friendly and enthusiastic student. He has a great attitude to learning and all his efforts has paid off with him progressing from Elementary to Upper Intermediate in his time at Lexis! We are glad this isn’t goodbye as Anthony will now complete our Cambridge Course!

Welcome to our five new students joining our General English classes this week!
Roman is from the German part of Switzerland. His hobbies include ice hockey, skiing, snowboarding and swimming in the lake nearby his home. He has just completed 3 years of studies in Business Process Engineering. He chose Byron Bay to further his English studies because he wants to be in a warm place where he can also learn to surf! After his 10 weeks at Lexis he will travel to Cairns, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand!
Jose is from Spain. His hobbies include travelling, climbing and swimming. He was working in I.T but decided to take a break to discover new things! He is looking forward to his time in Australia, meeting new people, improving his English, surfing and scuba diving! When he finishes his 7 weeks of studies he will rent a camper van to travel around New Zealand!
Maria is from Spain. She enjoys all sports related activities, particularly running and tennis. She also enjoys reading and taking photos. She has worked for many years within administration and as a PA. She wants to improve her English as when she returns to Spain she will be able to get a higher salary job using the language, or she may choose to live and work in another country!
Hinano is from Japan. Her main hobby is swimming. She works for a hotel company in Japan that allows her to travel and stay at different resorts, whilst working in their cafes and restaurants. She wants to improve her English as it will open up new jobs for her. She is already in love with Australia; the organic food, yoga, nature and beach!
Shizuku is from Japan. Her school teacher was from Australia and she enjoyed listening to him speak English and found the pronunciation very interesting; this is why she has chosen to come to Australia to learn English! She also wants to have a good level of English so she is able to travel to many countries for work!

Today, I spoke to graduating Akari Kurashige about her experience of doing the English and Yoga course at Lexis Byron Bay.
What made you decide to do the course?
I wanted to study English and I like yoga. I’ve been practising Ashtanga in Japan but wanted to try something new. I researched where I could study English and yoga together and found Byron Bay. I was really keen to come here when I discovered Byron is famous for yoga and surfing.
Which new styles of yoga did you try?
The English and Yoga course gave me the option to go to classes at three very different yoga studios. I tried Hatha Flow, Yoga Nidra, Vinyasa and Hot Vinyasa. I really liked them all, but Vinyasa at Creature Yoga was both the most challenging and my favourite.
How was studying Yoga in Australia different from doing it in Japan?
I only practised one type of yoga in Japan (Ashtanga). When I go back I want to keep trying and practising different styles. There were two differences that I really liked about the yoga classes that I did in Byron Bay. The first was listening to the birdsong outside during the class and the second was the long savansa. In Japan, it’s usually less than 5 minutes but in some classes here it was much longer.
Was it difficult to study Yoga in English instead of Japanese?
I could follow the instructions if I looked as well as listened and I now find native speakers easier to understand. The teachers were all different and I learned something from all of them. The Hot Yoga teacher was especially kind and chatted with me before and after the lessons.
Was it your first time trying Hot Yoga and did you enjoy it?
Yes, it was my first time and, unfortunately, I only went a couple of times as this studio was the furthest from my accommodation. I really liked it. The heat is strange but the poses are easier than a normal Vinyasa class, and it’s good to practise in front of a mirror. After the class I felt really nice; sort of tired and clean.
Did you enjoy your English study too?
Yes and I think my English is much better. My teacher Michelle is very kind and speaks very well. I also really liked the Conversations class.
What are your yoga goals for the future?
I learned a lot about Yoga in Byron Bay and want to keep doing it as a hobby. Maybe in the future, I’ll consider a career in it but I’m undecided at the moment.
