Today the students were treated to a free lunch, prepared for them by a cat and a witch!
We had some Halloween snacks and cooked up some sausages on the BBQ for the students to enjoy in the sun.
There was lots of fun and games, including apple bobbing!!
Welcome to our three new starters joining us at Lexis Byron Bay today!
Jean, from France, will be here with us for the next 5 months. In this time he is looking forward to studying English, meeting new people and getting lots of surfing in! He has been studying Science in Bayonne City for the past 3 years but is wanting to improve his English so he is able to get a scholarship in an English speaking country!
Maurizio is from Italy. His hobbies include swimming, surfing and hanging out with friends; all things he’ll be able to do plenty of in Byron Bay! After his studies with us he will stay in Australia for one year, hoping to find a job where he can continue to practice his English!
Cristina, from Spain, studied Children’s Education at University and works as a Kindergarten Teacher. She chose to come and study at Lexis Byron Bay as it has everything she needs; English and water sports, such as surfing and diving!! She is really happy to be here and is looking forward to studying, working and enjoying this beautiful town!
This week we say a sad farewell to 11 lovely students.
Elementary – Teacher: Michelle
Reo and Kento, both from Japan, leave the Elementary class this week.
Reo was only at Lexis for 8 weeks but his progress has been outstanding. When her arrived at school he found it very difficult to have even the most basic conversation but now he is able to talk to anybody! Michelle said that they will miss his smiley face in class and hope that he can find a fun job in Australia and enjoy the rest of his time here.
Kento was only her in Byron Bay for two weeks, although he was in Lexis Noosa beforehand. Michelle said that Kento participated well in all activities and his speaking and confidence improved during his short time here. Kento is leaving Byron Bay to start a new job on the Gold Coast.
Pre-Intermediate 1 – Teacher: Harriett
Pre-Intermediate 1 say farewell to Fabio (Italy) and Nicole (Switzerland) this week. Both students have been at Lexis for 8 weeks.
Fabio started in Elementary and then moved into Pre-Intermediate after six weeks. His teachers (Michelle and now Harriett) said that he is a very kind person with a great sense of humour. Also, that he had a great attitude to learning and participated in all the class conversations.
Nicole’s teachers said that she is very friendly and easy to converse with. In particular, her English speaking and pronunciation are excellent and she shows great enthusiasm for learning. Nicole will now be travelling in Australia so will have plenty of opportunity to practice the English she’s learned.
Pre-Intermediate 2 – Teacher: Adrienne
Three students are leaving Pre-Intermediate 2 this week: Lucio and Alessandra from Brazil and Fabio from Switzerland. All three students studied at Lexis Byron Bay for four weeks.
Adrienne praised Alessandra for her contributions in class and her ability to self-correct. She also said that she is a great language learner because she is not shy to try to give an answer or read out a sentence and always keen to learn. Alessandra will definitely be missed from the class.
Mario, Alessandra’s husband, leaves with grade “A” despite finding the class speaking activities quite difficult at first. Adrienne said that she is very impressed with his progress and knows that he will continue to sail forward.
Fabio was described as easy-going and fun to have in the classroom and Adrienne said she would be sad to lose him from the class. He always had something to contribute and asked great questions. He also graduates with a grade “A”.
Intermediate 2 – Teacher: Kathleen
Kathleen’s class loses two students this week. Svetlana from Switzerland, who has been at Lexis for eight weeks and Fuku from Japan, who has only been here for two.
Svetlana’s grammar knowledge improved significantly during her time at the school and she graduates with a “A” grade (meaning she scored 84% or more on her last four weekly tests). Kathleen said that it was a pleasure to have her in class because of her excellent participation and her strong conversational skills.
As for Fuko, even though she has only been at Lexis for two weeks, she has made a big impression. Kathleen said that her grammar and vocabulary knowledge were great and that she has been able to communicate really well and fluently with all her classmates. All the class enjoyed hearing about some of her life experiences!!!
Upper Intermediate – Teacher: Claudia
The Upper Intermediate class is losing the lovely Unai, this week. Unai, from Spain has been at Lexis for four weeks and has been a conscientious student who has participated very well in class. Claudia said his contributions and enthusiasm really added to the dynamics of the class and that they all wished him the very best for the future.
CAE – Teacher: Josie
Pascale leaves CAE this week after 8 weeks at Lexis Byron Bay. Although Pascale hadn’t initially signed up for CAE, her placement test showed her to be perfect for this exam preparation class and the exam. Josie said that her command of the English language is very good and she has proved herself to be very competent across all skill areas. She has also been a cheerful, engaged and conscientious student, who Josie said has been a pleasure to teach. Pascale will take her CAE examination in Melbourne, while she is travelling and we wish her all the best.

Today the sun is shining in Byron and the weather is just glorious. Most of the students headed down to the beach to surf and tan but a few stayed behind to have a kick around in the garden!
It was the perfect opportunity to show off everyone’s soccer skills! Some were better than others (Harriett) but it didn’t stop us from enjoying ourselves and having lots of fun!

You can find amazing live music pretty much everywhere in Byron Bay. Today Jenny and Harriett enjoyed a delicious fresh smoothie whilst listening to these great guys sing and play acoustic tracks!
The farmers market is on every Thursday morning from 6:00 am. If you haven’t had chance to visit already we would highly recommend it! Harriett plans to do more trips to the market in the future, so make sure you keep a look out on our weekly activities calendar and sign up at the front desk so you don’t miss out!

The weather is so beautiful here in Byron Bay this week that many teachers are taking the opportunity to do part of their lessons in the sun.
On Monday, Kristy’s class were doing a running dictation (one student has to run, read something, remember it and tell their partner who writes it down. Then they swap).
Then, today Kathleen’s class were doing pair work discussing relationships. They had to tell a relationship story and then, later write a poem about someone they felt strongly about.
What a lovely way to study English! And it’s only the start of summer. We’ve got months of this lovely sunshine to look forward to 🙂

This week we welcome four new students to Lexis Byron Bay. They are from left to right: Cristina, Marina, Chiaki and Tobias.
Cristina is from Seville in Spain and is here in Byron Bay with her boyfriend, who thinks it’s the most beautiful place in the world. She has just finished training as a pharmacy technician and likes travel, sports and cinema.
Marina is also from Spain and has just finished a degree in Journalism. She loves nature and travelling and would love to work as a photo journalist in the future. She is staying at Lexis until April next year and hopes to gain the Cambridge Advanced Certificate.
Chiaki is Japanese but was has come to Australia via Thailand. She chose to study in Australia because of the weather and relaxed lifestyle. Also, she loves coffee so is excited about the number of coffee shops in Byron Bay. In Japan, she worked in Research and Development, creating products such as air-freshener and face masks.
Swiss Tobias is the oldest of three children. His family have a vegetable and cattle farm in Switzerland where he works with his father and brothers. His hobbies are mountain biking and football and he chose Byron Bay for the likes good weather, great beaches and nice people.

On Friday we celebrated the end of a rainy week with a beautiful beach picnic filled with lots of cheese and delicious snacks!
It was great start to the weekend hanging out at the beach with yummy snacks and great company! We headed down to the beach around 11:00 am very hungry and all excited to relax in the sunshine!
Jenny and Sharron spotted some Byron wildlife whilst walking to the beach!
Hundreds of bats peacefully hanging from the trees!
When we arrived at the beach it didn’t take long before all the cheese and bread had been eaten and our stomachs were full.
We had some great conversations about our future plans and fun experiences in Australia. The boys got competitive with the last of the grapes and tomatoes to see who could catch the most in their mouth.
There was a lots of grapes and tomatoes flying through the air!
Overall it was a great morning and left us all really happy and ready for afternoon classes!
Yesterday here at Lexis Byron Bay we enjoyed a relaxing morning and afternoon of Boomerang Painting!
We had templates and aboriginal symbol meanings to give the students some inspiration, but they all also added their own creative touch!
Boomerangs are a great souvenir for the students to take home from Australia!!
Also a very therapeutic way to spend an hour!!

Luke (Kyoung Joo), from Korea, graduates from Mel and Kristy’s Intermediate class. He started studying at Lexis Byron Bay back in January and has progressed from Elementary to Intermediate, with a quick trip home in between! He now leaves us to continue his studies at Lexis Sunshine Coast. We hope you enjoy your time there. It has been a pleasure to have met you, you will be missed!
Thomas, from Switzerland, graduates from our Pre-Intermediate class. His teacher Adrienne is very happy with how much he has improved his speaking and listening in his 4 weeks with us, and very pleased to be awarding him his well deserved A grade! We hope you get to use your English plenty on your travels and have an amazing time!
Last month BWT (Backpacker World Travel) arranged a special Brunswick BBQ day just for our Lexis students!!
They arranged for the bus to pick everyone up from school in the morning to take them all to Brunswick to enjoy a Saturday in the sun with their Lexis friends 🙂
They stopped at the bottle shop on the way so everyone could stock up on alcohol for the day’s antics!
Once in Brunswick they found a spot on the beach to set up. There they enjoyed drinks, a tasty BBQ and various ball games!
BWT arranged a competition with a Slip ‘N Slide; the students were split into two groups and had to slide to the end and down a glass of goon. The winners from each turn then went on to compete against the other winners until it was down the last 3!
These three lucky students each won amazing prizes courtesy of BWT!
1st Place: Chris – 3 day/2 night Fraser Island trip!!
2nd Place: Oliver – Kiwi Experience pass for the North Island of New Zealand!!
3rd Place: Louis – Great Barrier Reef trip!!
BWT will be planning more of these weekend trips in the near future so be sure to sign up! It’s a great way to make the most of your time in Byron (and Australia if you win a prize!!) and make new friends 🙂
Yesterday we hosted a Wine Tasting activity for our students!
The tastings were at 2pm and 5.30pm so both our morning and afternoon students could enjoy a few drinks after finishing class!
We had 5 wines to try; a mix of White, Dessert, Rose and Red!
Our selected wines were: Chardonnay (Eaglehawk), Moscato (Gossip), Rose (Sacred Hill), Shiraz (Eaglehawk), Merlot (Black Label).
The students then had to guess the alcohol percentage, price and country where the wine was from!
Mario proved to be quite the wine connoisseur, guessing almost everything right!
A fun time was had by all 🙂

Charles and Zara started the Club with a fantastic presentation. They talked in detail about all the beautiful must see destinations in Australia and the exclusive discounts for Lexis Students.
Zara shared with us her personal photographs and unforgettable experience traveling the Outback and described the chills she had when visiting Uluru Rock. This is must for anyone wanting to learn about Australian Aboriginal culture and traditions.
After the presentation it was time to have lots of fun playing games and eating some sweet breakfast treats!
Zara is in school three days a week to help all of our students get the most out of their time in Australia.
Go and have chat with her on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12- 3pm.

On Friday afternoon we headed to the beach for a game of volleyball in the beautiful sunshine!!
There was a slight malfunction with the net but the students displayed great teamwork in resolving this!!
Once the net was up and secure the competition began…
Upon seeing how much fun we have having some fellow beachgoers asked to join and the students happily welcomed them into the game!
After all their jumping around in the heat I made sure I had a cold beer (coke for Katjana!) waiting for them all 🙂

Miyu, from Japan, loves to watch movies and listen to music. She works as an Aesthetician but would now like to study Naturopathy so she can help people with their health rather than their appearance, as she feels this is more important. She will study this in Australia after she has improved her English with Lexis over the next 9 months!
Jenny is from Switzerland, where she lives with her boyfriend and their 2 guinea pigs! She enjoys traveling, cooking, running and meeting up with friends. She has worked in the Post Office for eight years and is now the manager there! She wants to improve her English so she can make many new friends on her travels!
Fuka, from Japan, is mum to our lovely homestay officer Koko! After visiting back in August and coming along to some of the school activities she decided to enrol herself for 2 weeks of studies! She has four grandchildren who she would really like to help with their English when she returns to Japan, and then one day bring them all here!
Tifany, from Switzerland, enjoys skiing, running, sports and reading. She works as a teacher for children aged 8 to 10, which keeps her very busy! It was her childhood dream to come to Australia so she is very happy to be here in this beautiful country! She wants to improve her English as she feels it is very important for travel, work and hobbies!
Daniela is from Columbia. She loves to read religious books and also to work out. She works as a physical therapist in a private hospital. She has studied in Colombia and Spain, and also studied English in America for 2 years, but is hoping her studies here in Australia will now help her to be fluent!
Sharon lives in Switzerland, but her mum is from Israel so she also speaks Hebrew. She was working in a dental practice but quit to go traveling! She wants to improve her English so she can speak to people from all over the world. She chose Australia for her studies because she loves the beach, warm weather an nature!
Kento, from Japan, joins us from Lexis Noosa! He will start off in Michelle’s Elementary class and study with us here in Byron for 6 weeks!

Last night we had so much fun Flamenco dancing with our amazing dance teacher Alba! Everyone got involved shaking their hips, clapping their hands and kicking their feet!
Flamenco dancing is a very popular dance throughout Spain and it reflects a lot of Spanish culture. We feel very luck to have Alba at Lexis sharing with us a part of her home culture and important steps to a basic Flamenco routine.
By the end of the hour we all looked semi professional and had big smiles on our faces!!
We hope to see Alba again so we can continue to practice our moves and shake our hips to some great Spanish music!
Every Monday the delightful Zara from BWT (Backpacker World Travel) leads a lighthouse walk for our Lexis students!
The walk is designed to help our new students get to know the area, as she first takes them through town and shows them where the banks, post office, supermarkets and good places to go out are!
Any and everyone is welcome to join though! Just meet out the front of school at 2pm 🙂
From town you’ll then head up to the iconic Byron Bay lighthouse, past the most Easterly Point in Australia, to spectacular views of the beaches and ocean!
So far on the walk students have been lucky enough to spot whales, dolphins and a koala with it’s baby!!
After it’s popularity last month Lexis student and Chef Bianca kindly agreed to host another cooking class for us!
This time she showed us how to make a sweet, simple, quick, cheap, tasty snack!! Everything you could ever want!
She started by giving everyone some fruit to cut (strawberries, kiwis, bananas, berries, and apples), whilst she made a warm mixture of condensed milk, coconut and cream!
We all then went outside and she demonstrated the best way to present and layer our ingredients onto toast, explaining what flavours and colours work well together to make it look good, as well as taste good!
It was absolutely delicious; so much so that none of us cared that we had nutella all over our faces!! Renata, while enjoying her second, described it as ‘the best day of here life’!
Luckily Bianca loves sharing her passion and knowledge of cooking with others as her fellows students have asked for this to be a regular activity! 🙂 🙂
Yesterday at Coffee Club we played 3 variations of Uno!
Between us we had three different sets of rules we play by, so we thought it would be fair to have a turn with each!
We started with my rules (the official Uno rules 😉 ), then Marta explained the Italian rules to us: you can put down after forfeit cards and also put down all your cards of any colour at once if they’re the same number.
We then played by Lydie and Charlotte’s Swiss rules, where you can put down at any time if you have the same colour and number; a much faster paced game but slightly confusing to then know who’s turn it is (for me at least, who lost!)
