Soccer Challenge! September 30

A few months ago we were challenged to a match of soccer by another school in Byron Bay.  After a great, close match, we unfortunately lost by just a couple of goals.

Today, we challenged them to another match to try to win back the trophy…

…and WE WON!!! The scores were tied 2-2 at full time, so we went to a penalty shootout. It was goal for goal and Lexis made all their penalty shots, bringing it to 5-4 in penalties before the last SAE player took their shot…which was saved by our keeper Shin!

Congratulations to Team Lexis! It was an awesome game and you all played so well despite the heat! Well done on bringing the trophy back to Lexis! 🙂

Everyone enjoyed a few beers at The Bowlo after the match with SAE too.

Special thanks to Let’s Go Surfing Byron Bay for providing us with the t-shirts for our team uniform!

Yuki is from Japan and graduates from Kathleen’s Intermediate class. After 24 weeks with Lexis Byron Bay, she is graduating and will be greatly missed by the Lexis family. She has made enormous progress in all areas of English during her time here. In particular, she has become very confident in her ability to speak with people from a wide variety of countries and English levels. She has brought a bright personality, great sense of humour and lovely smile to her classroom. She asks intelligent questions in class and in GIL, which has helped both herself and her classmates to learn more and improve their English language knowledge. Well done, Yuki!

Soccer in the garden! September 30

This morning we had a friendly game of soccer in the garden. The students enjoyed the warm, sunny weather with a few games together, including a penalty shootout between Othman and Yuki!

After an hour of running around in the sunshine, they relaxed with some TimTams before heading to their class. 🙂

Happy Student – Yran!

Yran is from Brazil and arrived in Australia for his first trip abroad just one month ago. After spending his first week in the country in the lovely city of Brisbane, he then made his way south to start at Lexis Byron Bay. When choosing where in the world to go to learn English, he decided on Australia for the great weather, the more affordable living costs and for being able to study and work at the same time. Yran has now been in Byron Bay for just over three weeks and is absolutely loving it! He said there are so many great things about this town and area, such as the friendly people, the beaches and, his favourite thing above all, the Byron lifestyle.

yran

For his first month here, Yran is living in a homestay with a local family. He said the family are great and he would have booked to stay longer with them if he had known how wonderful they are. Unfortunately for him, the family have another student booked in with them so he couldn’t extend his homestay, but he knows the next student will be very happy with them! Instead, he is moving into a rental share-house with other locals and tourists living in Byron Bay for the Summer.

Yran with his fellow students on their first day at Lexis Byron Bay

Within a week of arriving in Byron Bay, Yran was very proactive about getting his resume ready and scouring the town for some work. He lined up three interviews within the first week and landed himself a job at The Roadhouse, a popular bar cafe in Byron Bay. He has worked there for just over a week now and is really enjoying his job as a Dishwasher (or ‘dishie’ as Australians call it!). The people he works with are all locals, are patient with teaching the new skills and explaining English words, and they all have a great time together. Yran is learning a lot, not only about how the kitchen works, but also about Australian English and some of the slang we use. For example, one of his co-workers refers to  good things as ‘sweet’ and ‘sick’ (“the waves were sick!”, “that’s a sweet surfboard!”) all the time! Yran thinks it is a really  good idea to work as well as study, as it has helped him to integrate with locals and learn more English.

img_4579

Despite improving his English by speaking with locals, he believes that most of the improvement has come through his classes at Lexis Byron Bay. He is learning a lot from both the teachers and practicing with other students at school. At school there is a wide variety of students from all over the world, so Yran has found that most of his friends speak different languages and they need to speak in English to communicate. This has helped him gain confidence and learn quickly in his first few weeks here.

Yran has five more months of studying at Lexis Byron Bay  and is looking forward to spending the Summer here. After graduating, he plans to head to Melbourne for a new experience, living in a big city with different weather and a different culture to both Brazil and Byron Bay. He hope to do more study there, possibly doing a short course in Permaculture, but he hasn’t decided yet.

For other students coming to study at Lexis Byron Bay, Yran’s advice is to try hard with whatever it is you are doing here! Whether it is learning English, finding a job or somewhere to live, making friends and having new experiences, work on it everyday! He also recommends to be open to try everything while you are here and don’t be shy, as you will learn and experience more that way.

October Activity Calendar!

october-activity-calendar

Next week is the start of OCTOBER and we have an exciting month of activities planned in the mornings and afternoons especially for our Lexis students!

Every Monday you can stretch out and relax doing Yoga with Stef in the garden from 11-12 and with Fee in Room 8 from 2:15 to 3:15. Don’t forget that the 3rd of October is a Public Holiday, so there will be no school next Monday!

On Tuesdays we have Coffee Lounge, which gives our students the opportunity to practice their English and get to know each other while enjoying great coffee and yummy TimTams!

On Wednesdays we will start the month with a Table Tennis Tournament to find this month’s Lexis Champion. I have noticed a lot of students using the new table, practicing for the next tournament so there is sure to be some good competition! The following week we have Flavio coming by at 11am to teach us how to Skateboard and Chloe will be here at 2pm to run a Mindfulness meditation for our students. Later in the month we are getting into the kitchen to do some Thai Cooking, exploring the delicious flavours of Thailand while making a traditional Green Curry. Then to finish off the month we have Pizza and Pictionary in the morning, which will be a fun way to learn some new English words and phrases, and in the afternoon we can get creative while learning about Aboriginal Australian culture at Boomerang Painting.

Every second Thursday we have the very popular 1-hour Surf Lesson with the team at Lets Go Surfing. These lessons are only $20 and are a great way to give surfing a try before booking more lessons to help you become a real Byron Surfer!  Alternating with this, we have Job Club for those students looking for work in Byron Bay and wanting extra help with writing their resume, preparing for interviews and applying for jobs.

On Fridays we will celebrate the first week of the course book next week with a Start of Course BBQ in the front garden, both in the morning and afternoon. For the rest of the month we are getting active, with Volleyball and Soccer on different days (in the garden for the morning session and at the beach for the afternoon), and a morning session of Slacklining in the garden with Olmo and a Bike Ride to Tallows Beach in the afternoon.

GIL (Guided Individual Learning) runs every day from 12-1pm and 2-3pm in Room 8. Come along to get help with anything from homework to vocabulary to writing your resume.

We will also continue to enjoy our Student Nights at Cheeky Monkeys every Tuesday night – meet at BWT @ 8pm first to get your drinks, food and fun!

Don’t forget that you can book your 3-hour surf lessons with us anytime at Reception for just $50!

Have a great month!🙂
