It is a rainy afternoon today, perfect for Beer Tasting in the student lounge!
We tasted six different Australian beers, including the low-carb Pure Blonde, the iconic VB, a local brew by Stone Wood, Little Creatures Pale Ale from the opposite side of Australia, my personal favourite Coopers Pale Ale, and the special annual edition Imperial IPA. There was a beer for everyone!
After the initial tasting was done, we all enjoyed finishing off our favourite beers and attempting the Beer Label quiz…How many do you know??
Well done to Rodrigo and Artjan who were the winners of the quiz and won a Coopers Sparkling Ale to enjoy!

Welcome to our new students Donovan from France, Audrey from New Caledonia and Estelle from Switzerland.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Donovan travelled to Australia six years ago and fell in love with the country, especially Byron Bay. He is studying English at Lexis so that he can work and travel in Australia, and hopes to stay for two years. In France, Donovan studied Communication and Printing at a specialised school and worked hard for four years in a supermarket to save up to come to Australia. He likes sports such as football, handball and tennis, and can’t live without music!
Audrey chose to study in Byron Bay because she prefers to be away from the stress of a city and she also wants to learn to surf. Last year she completed her High School exam in literature studies and hopes to one day become a Speech Therapist. Audrey enjoys horse riding, camping and reading.
Estelle is studying English to improve her communication, so that she can speak with others while travelling. After her studies at Lexis, she plans to spend a month travelling in Australia with her boyfriend. In Switzerland she has been working in an office to save up for her trip to Australia and is also studying Medicine to become an Occupational Therapist. Estelle loves to travel and likes cooking, photography and dance.

What a perfect way to finish the week! Ramona, Nadine and Eric joined me for a bike ride to Tallow Beach this afternoon. We went for a swim and had fun tackling the waves before relaxing on the beach and chatting.
Thanks for joining me for a lovely afternoon in the sunshine!
We have 8 students graduating from Lexis Byron Bay this week – Nancy, Minato, Michael, Eric, Isabelle, Yann, Simon and Kazuki (although Yann and Simon were not at graduation to be photographed and Kazuki left school earlier this week).
Nancy is from Italy and she graduates today from Claudia’s Intermediate class. Claudia says she has been a great student who has worked hard and talked a lot, helping quieter students to find their voices. Nancy will be staying in Australia for 2 years to live, work and travel, so we hope Lexis has been a memorable start to her time here.
Teacher Claudia and Nancy
Minato is from Japan and although she has only been here for a few weeks, she has been a smiling and friendly face around school and has participated enthusiastically in class and in activities like Coffee Club. She has made good progress in her Elementary class and her confidence has improved a lot, which has been great to see. Good luck for the future, Minato!
Teacher Becky and Minato
Michael is from Switzerland and he has been at Lexis for 10 weeks. Having completed the Intensive Intermediate course, he graduates today from the Upper-Intermediate class and his teacher Josie says he should be really happy with his progress. We have all been so impressed by Michael’s positive attitude to his surfing injury – Michael, we hope your poor shoulder is back to normal soon and wish you all the waves you deserve in the future! You can read more about Michael here.
Eric is from Switzerland too and he has spent 10 weeks at Lexis. He started in the Intensive Intermediate class and has progressed to Upper-Intermediate level – good work, Eric! Eric is a very friendly and enthusiastic student and it’s always nice chatting with him. Enjoy your upcoming travels, Eric!
Isabelle is from France and (like Michael and Eric) she has worked hard to progress from Intensive Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate during the last 10 weeks. Her accuracy and confidence when speaking have improved noticeably and her teacher Josie describes her as an excellent student. We wish you all the best for the future, Isabelle!
Teacher Josie with Michael, Isabelle and Eric
Yann Santini is another Swiss student and he is graduating after 10 weeks at Lexis Byron Bay. His teacher Anji says Yann has a great attitude and a very friendly nature. Yann is also a very sporty guy and has especially enjoyed cycling in and around Byron Bay! Enjoy the rest of your time in Australia, Yann, and good luck for the future!
Yann
Simon (who was not here to have his photo taken today) is also from Switzerland and he has been studying with us for 5 weeks. Today he graduates from the Pre-Intermediate class. Simon’s sister lives in New Zealand so next, he plans to go there to visit her. Enjoy your travels, Simon!
Finally, Kazuki from Japan has been at Lexis for just 2 weeks doing the English and Surfing course. He has really enjoyed school and his afternoon surf lessons and he says his surfing has improved during his time here. Kazu is a very friendly guy and it’s been nice chatting with him. We wish you all the best for the future, Kazu!
Michael is from Switzerland and has been a student at Lexis Byron Bay for 10 weeks. He is graduating today and will be missed at school and at his Homestay. I chatted with Michael today to find out more about his time in Australia…
Michael has been in Australia for ten weeks and has spent the whole time in Byron Bay. He chose to come to Australia because he loves to surf, and his favourite thing about Byron Bay is having the ocean so close and always being barefoot!
Now that he has graduated, he is going to travel in Australia to meet up with friends and drive from Brisbane to Sydney. Then he sadly has to go back to Switzerland – in his first week in Australia, he injured his shoulder while surfing, and has to return to Switzerland to get it fixed. He plans return to his work as a carpenter in Switzerland so he can save up to do a surfing trip around Australia when his shoulder is better.
Michael lived in a Homestay during his time in Australia. He said,
“I really love the homestay, I feel like part of the family – we always have fun and make jokes. It has become my home.”
In his Homestay family is Dayan, who is 14 years old. Michael went to Dayan’s school and taught his class about European Handball. Michael played in a Handball association in Switzerland for four years when he was 14-18 years old, so was able to teach the class of 18 students the rules of Handball. They got really excited when he taught them some tricks, like playing a shot behind the back and had a lot of fun using the new rules in their Handball games at school.
Thanks for chatting with me Michael! It was lovely to meet you and we look forward to seeing you back in Byron Bay one day!
Meet Paul’s FCE class: Andrea from Brazil, Mireia from Spain, Yuka from Japan, Artjan from Switzerland and Ayuko from Japan, with their teacher Paul.
How long have you been in Australia?
Andrea: I was previously in Australia for almost a year. I had to go back to Brazil, where I stayed for six months and now I’m here again for six more months and maybe more. I really like Byron Bay. I can’t say too much about the country but Byron is nice!
Artjan: I have been here in Australia almost six months and will stay until June.
Yuka: I’ve been in Australia since last October and I’m going to stay here until this November.
Ayuko: I’m from Japan. I’ve been here for 3 months and I’m going to stay until November.
Mireia: I’m from Spain. I’ve been in Australia for 6 months and I’m going to stay here for three months more.
What are the similarities and differences between your home country and Australia?
Andrea: There are so many differences between here and Brazil, like culture, people, language, money, economy, transport etc, but I can see also a lot of similarities such as weather, nature, and lifestyle.
Artjan: There are so many differences between Australia and Switzerland. For me the most dangerous difference is the traffic.
Yuka: language and weather and seasons.
Mireia: The differences between Australia and Spain are food, timetables, kind of parties, lifestyle, weather, seasons, currency, cost of living, salaries, culture and language.
What do you like doing in your free time?
Andrea: Relaxing with my friends, relax and staying with my family as well.
Artjan: I like to meet friends in my free time or do some different kind of sport for example snowboarding or soccer.
Yuka: I usually go to beach to swim or go to the pub to drink beer with my friends.
Ayuko: I like surfing and travelling.
Mireia: I like meeting with my friends, doing sport or going to the beach to chill.
What kind of music do you like?
Andrea: My favourite kinds of music are hip hop, reggae, classic rock, blues and Brazilian music. There are a lot of good musicians in Brazil and I really love to go to concerts.
Artjan: My favourite music is hardcore techno so I prefer DJs but I also like bands.
Yuka: I like RnB and Reggae. I prefer live bands.
Ayuko: I like pop music. I love Bruno Mars. His voice is so nice.
Mireia: I like different kinds of music. It depends on the situation.
What is your family like?
Andrea: My family is not so big. I have only one brother and one sister, older than me and we get on well with each other. I can say I really miss them at the moment.
Artjan: My immediate family is small but my extended family is big and all over the world. I have one younger sister, one stepsister and two stepbrothers.
Yuka: I have a small family who are my father and mother and one older sister. They’re my immediate family.
Ayuko: I have two older brothers. They are so nice and I love them.
Mireia: I don’t have any brothers and sisters but I’ve got a stepsister and stepbrothers and I get on well with them.
How many languages do you speak? Would you like to learn more?
Andrea: I speak Portuguese and a bit English and I would like to learn more languages like Spanish and French.
Yuka: I speak Japanese and English and Indonesian. I’m studying English and Indonesian now.
Ayuko: I speak Japanese and a little English.
Mireia: I speak almost three languages; Catalan, Spanish and a little English.
If you could learn a new skill, what would it be?
Andrea: If I could learn a new skill at the moment I’d chose psychology.
Artjan: If I could learn a new skill, I would like to learn to fix a car. So it is much cheaper when my car has a problem.
Yuka: If I could learn a new skill, I’d choose to learn Spanish.
Ayuko: I used to work at café as a waitress in Japan before I came here. Now, I want to learn more and be a specialist of latte art (even though I can’t drink coffee because it’s so bitter for me; even café latte).
Mireia: If I could learn a new skill, I would like to study Logistics in English.
The temperature is forecast for a high of around 28 during the day and a low of 21 overnight. Friday is looking clear, with showers and possible thunderstorms over the weekend.

Despite the rainy evening, a fun night was had by all at Cheeky Monkeys last night! We enjoyed the free beers and food, and had a great time chatting, shooting pool and dancing the night away.
Lexis students Jobs, Alex, Rodrigo and Marco enjoying a friendly game of pool.
It was another great opportunity for me to meet and get to know more of you. I look forward to many more Cheeky Monkeys nights in the weeks to come!
Today Jeannine and Nam-Yi joined Laura and myself (Megan) at Coffee Club for some coffee, Tim Tams and Lexis Jenga. We tackled questions about dream holidays, our favourite foods and childhood memories.
Jeannine made the first tower fall and successfully completed the challenge of giving a kiss on the hand of someone not playing the game – without speaking to them first!
After a longer second round with a VERY tall and wobbly tower, it was eventually toppled by the wind, so nobody had to complete a challenge for that round!
Lexis Jenga was a fun way for me to get to know more students at Lexis. I look forward to playing games at Coffee Club with you all in the weeks to come!
Yesterday afternoon we had a party to welcome our new students, including the new Cambridge starters. Everyone enjoyed the snacks of sushi, salads and chips and used the opportunity to get to know their fellow students and find out more about Lexis and the wonders of Byron Bay.
It was lovely to chat with you all and I look forward to getting to know you better over the coming weeks!
We have 9 new starters this week at Lexis Byron Bay – a big welcome to Simone G, Adria, Miho, Ramona, Simone S, Fabian, Jessica, Saki and Andrea.

Mihois also from Japan and is one of six in her family. She worked in a bank before coming to Australia but doesn’t enjoy it. Coincidentally, she too is studying English so she can become a yoga instructor and hopes to open her own yoga studio one day.
Make sure to check back here soon to find out more about the rest of our new starters this week!
Hello! My name is Megan and I am the new Activities and Student Support Officer at Lexis Byron Bay.

I am based at Reception and will be running activities through the week, so come say hi and introduce yourself! I am so excited to be part of the team at Lexis and am looking forward to helping you all enjoy your time here in Byron Bay.

Marc Balzarini is from Switzerland and he graduates today from the Pre-Intermediate class (but he did not come to graduation to have his photo taken!) After 6 weeks studying his teacher Kristy says he has improved his speaking skills and writes imaginatively (especially when he comes to class after surfing). Enjoy your travels, Marc!
This morning Tom, Desiree, Lulu, Erik, Marie and Seraina from our afternoon FCE class came along to the Mullumbimby Farmers Market. It was a busy market with many stalls selling local fruits and vegetables, salads, herbs, meat, eggs, dips, delicious cakes and treats, coffee, juices, smoothies, chocolates and hot food. It was a relaxing way to spend a cloudy morning and by the time we left, the sun was shining again!
Our lovely French student Lulu will graduate this week and we’re all going to miss her! Lulu first came to Lexis Byron Bay last September. Then in December she spent a few weeks at Lexis Perth, before returning to Byron in January to do the FCE course (Cambridge First Certificate of English).
Lulu is a friendly, sociable and hard-working student who has embraced all aspects of Byron life. She has been a regular at our Cheeky Monkey’s student party nights as well as a fierce competitor in our table tennis tournaments!
I had a chat with Lulu this morning to find out more about her time in Australia…
Where are you from?
Paris, France.
Why did you come to Australia?
First I was choosing between Canada and Australia. In the end I chose Australia because of the weather and because the people are so open-minded and friendly. Also if I was going somewhere I wanted it to be really far away!
What is your favourite thing about Byron Bay?
I think the atmosphere at night. Even if we go out to the same places every week it is a good routine. There is a nice group of people and there is a global feeling.
What were your weaknesses with English when you first arrived in Australia?
Speaking! I was ashamed of my accent and for the first few weeks I could only speak with people for 2 minutes because I was embarrassed by my accent. Then my confidence grew and I realized it didn’t matter, so my speaking improved a lot. I studied English in high school for 6 years so for me things like grammar were just a review.
How is your class/teacher?
At the moment I’m in the Cambridge FCE class with Josie. I like the class, there is a good relation between all the students and our teacher Josie is always smiling and patient, even when she has to repeat something many times.
Is your English improving?
Now I am not so shy, I speak naturally and I realise mistakes are normal. I think I also really improved my writing, for example things like word order, prepositions, verb patterns.
You studied at Lexis Byron Bay first, then Lexis Perth, then back to Byron Bay! How was that experience?
First I spent 12 weeks in Byron Bay and then I transferred to Perth because I also wanted to see the west coast of Australia. I really loved my Upper-Intermediate class there because we studied in the evening and all the students were really nice. Byron Bay and Perth are very different, near Perth there is good scenery but for me the city was too big. So I came back to study in Byron Bay because it suits me better.
Would you recommend studying at Lexis Byron Bay?
For sure! My advice would be to stay for more than 3 months if you can because for me, I felt like just 12 weeks was not enough. You need time to settle in, get to know people and get to know the place.
What are your plans after you finish studying?
I will go back to France because I have to do some exams in March. Then in September I hope to study a Masters degree in Illustration, maybe in Paris or maybe in Canada – although the climate will be so different from Australia, I’ll have to get used to the cold!
Thanks for chatting with me Lulu, good luck for the future! 🙂
Friday should be dry with temperatures around 27 degrees during the day and 20 degrees at night. There may be some rain showers on Saturday morning but these should clear on Saturday afternoon and Sunday should be dry with some cloud.

This morning, Pablo, Lulu, Erik and Aurelie competed in a table tennis tournament! It lasted for almost an hour and eventually, Pablo was our grand champion and Aurelie took second place. Lulu also played very well as always and Erik… well, let’s just say it was not Erik’s lucky day!! 🙂
This afternoon we had a travel talk with Ma and Ricardo from Backpackers World Travel. They provided some free pizza and gave us an overview of some top travel destinations around Australia, New Zealand, Bali, Thailand and Fiji. They also had some prizes up for grabs – Alida won a BWT t-shirt, Artjan won a $100 travel voucher and in the final challenge, Lucas won a two-for-one Fraser Island trip!
If you have any more travel-related questions or want some help planning and booking activities, you can find Ma in the student lounge from 12pm-3pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday 🙂

Our lovely student Carlos from Mexico took some fantastic photographs at our Cheeky Monkey’s student party last night. We enjoyed free food, free drinks and plenty of chatting, laughing and dancing. It looks like everyone was having a great time!
This afternoon Iara from Brazil and Minato from Japan joined me for Coffee Club. While enjoying coffee and Tim Tams, we chatted about different topics such as skydiving, Australian hospitality, BBQs and popular food in our countries. It was a good opportunity to get to know each other better and practice speaking and listening. Thanks for joining me, Iara and Minato!
Minato is from Japan and this is only her second week at Lexis Byron Bay, but yesterday she scored 100% on her weekly progress test. Congratulations, Minato, keep up the good work!
