Julie took part in the prize giveaway challenge and Lucas and DK showed us their impressive dance moves (check out the video on the Lexis Byron Bay Facebook page!)
Coffee Club was a lot of fun today! Alongside our coffee and Tim Tams we played some word games – a great way to have fun, practice vocabulary and get to know each other.
First we played “charades” and Zdenek was very good at both miming and guessing!
Zdenek miming “milking a cow”
Everyone who had a go received a special white chocolate Tim Tam!
Jonas miming “surfing a wave”
Yuna deciding how to mime her action
Next we played “Aussie Heads”… 3 students had to guess the word on the card stuck to their forehead by asking questions. They could only ask questions with “yes” or “no” answers. They had to guess Aussie-related words like “shark”, “cricket” and “Great Barrier Reef”.

This afternoon we took a walk through the bush to Cape Byron Lighthouse. It was a windy but warm afternoon – perfect for a scenic walk! We spotted a lizard, dolphins playing in the surf and even saw some whales very close to shore.
Today we say goodbye to 2 Lexis students… Nicole Bachmann and Ima (Hsin-Ju Chu).
Nicole Bachmann from Switzerland has been studying for 4 weeks in the Upper-Intermediate class. Her teacher Jodie said she is an intelligent and charismatic student. Nicole said thank you to everyone and told us she has had a nice and great time at Lexis Byron Bay.

Goodbye and good luck for the future, Nicole and Ima! 🙂
This morning, Kathleen’s Pre-Intermediate class went to the park at Main Beach to do their end of course review. It’s always great when our classes can take advantage of Byron Bay’s lovely outdoor spaces!
The original inhabitants were the Arakwal people, part of the Bundjalung group. They called the area Cavvanbah, meaning meeting place.
Byron Bay has changed dramatically in the last 250 years. Here’s a time line of European history…
1770 : Captain Cook named Cape Byron as he was sailing past
1828 : William Johns on the HMAS Rainbow mapped the Bay
1884/5 : The village of Cavvanbah was surveyed. 200 lots of land were sold.
1894 : Opening of the railway. Cavvanbah was renamed Byron Bay.
Early 1900’s : Dairy and pig industry dominated.
1930’s : Sand mining was established between Ballina and Brunswick Heads
1954-62 : The whaling industry took as many as 150 humpback whales per year.
1960’s : Surfers discovered the many beaches around Byron Bay.
1973 : Nimbin’s Aquarious Festival established Byron Bay as hippy / alternative town.
1980’s : Byron Bay discovered by backpackers as a must visit destination.
1990’s – present : Tourism is the largest industry in Byron Bay, with people flocking from all over the world to enjoy the beaches, the surf, the markets, the festivals and that famous Byron atmosphere!

Quentin and Aurelie have been in the Cambridge class for 7 weeks. Find out more about their experiences at Lexis Byron Bay so far…
Where are you from?
Both: Switzerland!
Why did you come to Australia?
Quentin: To improve our English first and because of the climate.
Aurelie: Because it’s warm and because we live far away, so if we come here we have to stay for a long time.
Quentin: We had quite a long time to spend and it made sense to do that now because it may be the only opportunity to come
What is your favourite thing about Byron Bay?
Aurelie: The beach! The Pass beach.
Quentin: For me it’s the surf and I really like the atmosphere of Byron, it’s relaxed.
Is your English improving?
Aurelie: Of course! I understand my host family much better now.
Quentin: I saw a big difference between the test I did in the first week and the recent test. Also my speaking and almost everything – I can do it easier now.
What would you say to someone who is considering studying at Lexis Byron Bay?
Aurelie: For sure, they should come here, it’s amazing!
Quentin: The only negative aspect is that it’s difficult to get in touch with local people, because there are so many tourists in Byron Bay. It’s hard to speak with people who were born in Byron because there are so many people from all over the world.
Aurelie: My advice would be to go in a homestay if you want contact with locals. My host family is just amazing.
What are your plans after you finish studying at Lexis?
Aurelie: First when we graduate from Cambridge we are going to travel for 6 weeks around Australia and New Zealand. Then I think I will stay in Australia, maybe to work or maybe to study more
Quentin: For me next there will be Army Service back in Switzerland, I have no choice, I have to do it. After I will begin to study Architecture.

All our students go through a Four-Weekly report process, which means that after 4, 8, 12 etc weeks their teachers writes a report about their progress and takes them through it and then the student has the chance to give feedback on their teacher and their progess.
This week three students in Claudia’s Intermediate class gave this lovely feedback:
Claudia is a very good teacher and her lessons are always very entertaining. She does a lot of games and everyone takes part.
Eva Marie
I am very happy with the school and the teaching materials. My teacher is always in an absolutely great mood and ready to help at any time. Thanks!
Fridolin
Our teacher explains the grammar very good. She makes an example to the grammar. She is patient and makes the lesson interesting and funny. The games are funny and the grammar clearer. The essay is difficult for me but this helps me to improve my English.
Simona
Thanks Claudia for doing such an amazing job and to Eva Maria, Fridolin and Simona for taking the time to provide such thoughtful and eloquent feedback.
Our students have been working very hard in GIL (Guided Independent Learning) this week!GIL happens every day at 2pm. It’s a chance for students to do their homework, ask the teacher questions or get extra help with difficult topics.

We sat in the garden and enjoyed coffee, Tim Tams and conversation. It was a lovely opportunity for new and existing students to meet each other and discover more about each other!
Some of today’s questions included “What is your favourite type of music?”, “Have you ever been in love?” and “Have you ever had a speeding ticket?”
This week, Aurore told us more about her experiences at Lexis Byron Bay…
Where are you from?
I’m from France and I’ve been at Lexis for 10 weeks.
Why did you come to Australia?
I wanted to improve my English in a country where the people, food and weather are nice. Australia seems to be these things.
What is your favourite thing about Byron Bay?
The lifestyle – everything! Seeing animals in the wild like whales, dolphins and wallabies. I also like the proximity of the beach.
Is your English improving?
Yes, I think so. My pronunciation is improving and other students have told me my accent is getting clearer. I am more confident and now I take more pleasure from speaking.
What would you say to someone who is considering studying at Lexis Byron Bay?
Just come and do it! At Lexis there are nice teachers who really want to help us. It’s an amazing adventure to meet new people from all around the world and there are nice activities every day.
What are your plans after you finish studying at Lexis?
Next I will go to New Zealand, to the south of the south island. I have booked a cruise to see the scenery. After that, I will come back to Australia to travel with my parents and my boyfriend. I will bring them to Byron Bay to show them around.
We have 9 new students starting at Lexis Byron Bay this week – Estelle, Olalla, Michaela, Karin, Cheryl, Kana, Eriko, Hsin Ju and Maria
Estelle Hubert is from Switzerland and she loves reading, listening to music and sport. She has come to Byron to improve her English. Afterwards she will find a job in Switzerland and begin university.

Michaela Muller is from Switzerland where she lives in the mountains and works winter seasons. She wants to improve her English, so she chose Australia because it’s a nice place.
Karin Odermatt is from Switzerland and she plays the French horn in an Orchestra. She has come to Australia and Asia for 6 months and after she hopes to study at university.
Cheryl Hausheer is from Switzerland and has wanted to visit Australia since she was a child, as her favourite animal was a kangaroo. She enjoys scouts and music. Next year she will start to study at university.
Kana Miyazawa is from Japan and enjoys rock music. In Japan she is studying sociology at University. She is here to improve her English and enjoy Australia!
Eriko Sakaguchi is from Japan and enjoys movies, shopping, swimming and music. She is hoping to improve her English here in Byron, and one day wants to open a cafe!
Ima (Hsin Ju Chu) is from Taiwan and enjoys painting and yoga, which is why she chose to come to Byron Bay. She hopes that improving her English will help her discuss her paintings overseas.
Maria Angeles Maso Martes is from Barcelona, Spain. She loves travel, meeting new people and learning about new cultures. She also enjoys sports. She decided to learn English in Australia because she loves the sun and the beach.
A warm welcome to you all, we hope you have a wonderful time in Byron Bay.
This week we say goodbye to four students: Guilia and Urs from Switzerland, Alfie from Taiwan and Marc from Spain.
Guilia Coluccia left school on Thursday as she was heading straight back to Switzerland ready for work on Monday. She told me that next time she would love to come for longer and see more of Australia.
Urs Lerch was here for four weeks in the Intermediate class. His teacher said that he enjoyed talking, worked hard and did well. He said thanks for everything and that he was sure he would meet us all again one day.
Marc Cortada Elvira first studied at Lexis when he did Paul’s FCE class in March. He then went to Lexis Brisbane before coming back down to the beach. His teacher, Jodie, said that he was “always on time” and, after this generated lots of laughter, that he appreciated sarcasm. He is not really leaving as he will staying in Byron and continuing to live next door for the foreseeable future.
Finally, lovely Alfie, Tsung-Yi Wu, is leaving Lexis Byron Bay to go and study in Brisbane. He has worked hard in his Pre-Intermediate class and leaves with an A grade. His teacher, Kathleen, said that he had a gift for explaining things to other students with good humour and lots of personality and that he would be missed.
Goodbye and good luck to all of you. We really enjoyed getting to know you.

Today’s activity was a student debate! Ju, CD, Kanta, Artjan, Heidi, Quentin and Till took part. We started with a group debate with the topic “The death penalty should be abolished”. There were some strong arguments on both sides.
4 students debated the next topic “Marijuana should be legalised” and the other students listened and voted for the pair with the best argument.
Finally, Artjan and Till went head-to-head debating “Animal testing should be banned”.
Both students made some excellent arguments, but the final vote made Till the overall winner of the debate (and the beer!) Well done Till!
We had another lively student night at Cheeky Monkey’s last night – Tom even won a cash prize by dancing on stage! Here are some photos of some of the students…
