Back Row Left to Right: Cesare, Lucas, Luciana, Chloe, Simona & Mariko Front Row Left to Right: Loan, Sofie & Julie
This week we welcome nine new starters to Lexis Byron Bay: Cesare and Luciana from Italy, Lucas from Belgium, Chloe from Korea, Mariko from Japan, Simona, Loan and Julie from Switzerland and Sofie from Sweden.
Cesare has already been in Australia for three weeks. He was travelling but after reaching Byron Bay decided to stay for a while. In Italy, he’s an Interior Design student and needs a good level of English to be able to find work in this field.
Luciana lives in the centre of Rome and works with her parents. All her family, her parents, her brother and her are pharmacists. She wants to improve her English to be able to better help tourists who come into the shop.
Lucas has just finished school in Belgium and will now study English for a total of 36 weeks (18 in Byron Bay and 18 at Lexis Perth). He wants to study Business in Brussels and the course is taught in English so he needs to become fluent. He told me he was a beginner but actually already tested as a strong Intermediate student, so I’m sure he’ll have not problems reaching his goal.
Chloe and Julie are both here to study on the First Certificate Preparation course, which starts next week. Simona, came to Australia with her boyfriend last year and loved it so much she decided to come back. Loan is a ski instructor and chose Byron Bay because of the surf and because it’s a small town. Mariko is here on a working holiday visa and will be looking for a job when her course finishes and, finally, Sofie will study on our full-time IELTS course in September because she needs get an IELTS 6 so she can do six months of her Economics degree in New Zealand.
A big warm welcome to all of you. We hope you have a fabulous time at Lexis and in Byron Bay.
The students hold up their finished boomerangs (except Aurelie who had to leave early so Hung is holding hers)
Yesterday afternoon a group of students gathered in the student lounge to learn about Aboriginal art and the origin of boomerangs. Then each student had the opportunity to design and paint their own boomerang, which they they got to keep.
It was a really fun activity and the finished boomerangs were little works of art.
Today we say goodbye to two Lexis | Byron Bay students, Thiago and Maria.
Thiago – perfectly suited to Byron Bay
Thiago Correa Da Costa from Brazil has been here for sixteen weeks. He started in Elementary and finishes with an Intermediate Grade B certificate. His teacher said that the was the most relaxed student she’d ever met and that he didn’t even seem to understand what the word “angry” meant. Thiago said that it was great to meet everyone, that he’d had fantastic time here and that he’s still in BB for another six months so he’s sure he’ll see us around.
Maria De La Sal Gonzalez from Spain actually graduated yesterday because she had to leave BB last night. Her teacher, Julia, described her as a lovely and happy student and told us that Maria said that she had had a great time at Lexis and enjoyed learning about other cultures.
Ten students took part in yesterday’s Ping Pong tournament and, as always it was very competitive. In the end Yuan Hung (Hung) beat Danny to win the prize and the prestige. Well done Hung!
Weather
Typical spring weather is expected this weekend. Around 20 degrees top, 13 degrees at night and a mix of sun, rain and cloud. At the time of writing, Sunday looks like the best day. Enjoy.

We have over 50 new students starting over the next two weeks and a great activity calendar to tempt them with.
There’s a great range, each week, of sporting and creative activities with skateboarding, yoga, soccer, cricket, table tennis and volleyball in the former and Korean cooking, boomerang painting, sandcastle building and a Masterchef cook-off in the latter.
We also bring Phil back for another opportunity to view the night sky through a powerful telescope. (Let’s hope there are no clouds this month) And, of course, we continue to run the fortnightly Coffee Lounge so you can mix with students from other classes, and the fortnightly Job Club for those who need help finding and applying for jobs.
We will also shortly be welcoming a new member of staff dedicated to activities and student services. Watch this space for more news soon.

Today we welcome just one new student: Eundeok from Korea.
Eundeok arrived in Byron Bay one week ago and has already found himself a share house. He is here on a working holiday visa so will be looking for a job next. He says he wants to do any job but farm work. He plans to stay in Byron Bay until March and then go to Sydney.
We look forward to getting to know you, Eundeok. Welcome to Lexis.
This week five students graduation from Lexis | Byron Bay. However, one (Jose Isidoro Martin Martinez) had to leave yesterday and two (Yuki Asai and Jon GonezGaztanaga) weren’t at school today.
Still, it was a sad graduation because we said goodbye to two lovey students who have been with us for a long time. Suzuka Uehara and Minami Nankai.
Suzuka started at Lexis in April as an Elementary student and graduates today, after 17 weeks with an “A” grade at Intermediate. She is now going to study for a further 17 weeks at the Lexis Noosa campus and told everybody to please contact her if they go to Noosa.
Minami has been here almost all long – for twelve weeks. When Minami started she was really shy and hated speaking in English. She has improved so much and leaves with an “A” grade at Pre-Intermediate. She can now communicate really easily and, even though she said that she didn’t like speaking in public, she thanked her “awesome teachers”.
Weather
Scattered showers are forecast for Saturday with a top of 21 and a low of 15. Sunday looks like a perfect day, however, with sunshine and maximum temperatures of 23.

This afternoon nearly every Lexis student joined Marie in the garden for coffee club. Marie showed them how to do a Tim Tam slam and there was lots of great conversation and English practice.
This week we welcome two students to Lexis Byron Bay: Dorothea Obwegeser and Aurelie Ferrara. Both have just finished high school and both are from Switzerland, although Dorothea is originally from Austria and Aurelie is lucky enough to have an Italian passport and therefore a Working Holiday Visa.
Dorothea, is here for four weeks and will be doing our English and surfing program. In addition to surfing, she loves all kinds of water activities and, so, is looking forward to snorkeling, scuba diving and stand up paddle-boarding while she is here. When she returns to Switzerland she’s going straight into university to study medicine.
Aurelie is having a gap year to decide what she wants to study at university. She’s going to study for the Certificate of Advanced English, while she is in Australia and then hopes to travel to New Zealand and up to Cairns. She said she chose Byron Bay because the pictures she saw of here looked amazing!
Welcome to both of you. We all hope you have a wonderful time at Lexis English.
A huuuge well done to Mutsuki and Yuta (and Rafael but he didn’t even come to school today, and he’s coming back anyway!) for completing their courses and graduating today.
Mutsuki was in the Elementary class for just 2 weeks and in that time she has done everything at lightning speed… progressed, finished exercises, styled her hair each morning! She is super speedy. And mature beyond her years- who would have thought she’s just 14 years old! We hope you come back soon Mutsuki and wish you the best of luck in the future!
Yuta has been with us for 4 weeks. His speaking improved as he moved up from Pre-Intermediate to Intermediate and he participated well. He did particularly well playing poker with Julia this week! He’s now going to work as a strawberry-picker for 3 months outside Brisbane to extend his Holiday working Visa. We wish you all the best Yuta!
Weather It looks like it’s going to be a warm and mostly sunny weekend with only a few scattered showers. Temperatures will be around 18 degrees during the day and 11 degrees at night.
It is always good to see a lot of enthusiastic students coming to GIL and studying extra hard to improve their English.
Our teacher Marie was happily surprised to see all the keen faces in her extra hour of GIL.
Guided Independent Learning is on with a different teacher every day from 2pm till 3pm. It is quiet studying time after school hours when our students can do their homework and ask for extra practice. Here they always have a teacher available to ask questions from and to help them with any problems. They can also find resources to practise their grammar and vocabulary as well as “Readers” which are classic books that have been made shorter and easier to suit students at different levels of English.
Today our students got quite excited playing a few rounds of poker with teacher Julia.
Tommy gave a great explanation on how to play poker which made it easy for everyone to follow the game. At the end Junya came out as the winner with 420 poker points. Look at his super happy face winning the Tim Tam chocolate price!

Meet Lynn our new Intermediate teacher here at Lexis Byron Bay.
Before starting at Lexis Lynn spent three years teaching in Tanzania in East Africa. She has lots of teaching experience with young learners and now decided that it was time to use this experience to teach English. We asked her a few questions about herself to introduce her to you. 🙂
I’ll bet you didn’t know… I recently spent 3 yrs volunteering at a school in East Africa. and I enjoy drumming
At 8am on Saturday you’ll find me… walking to the lighthouse or sitting on the beach -looking for Whales or Dolphins!
Best restaurant/cafe in Byron is… O Sushi, yumm! and Expresso Head Café
My dream holiday destination is… There are many! But Cuba is at the top of the list!
Byron Bay’s best kept secret is…. The Lone Goat Art Gallery (at the Library)
My English learning tip is…. Put it into practice!!… in speaking, reading and writing all day, everyday, everywhere!
Aurore from France, Nicole from Switzerland, Mayu from Japan and Danny, Lee and Choi from Korea.
Aurore is going to study in Byron for three months. She wants to have a break from working in France and to improve her English so that she can work internationally.
Mayu from Japan is going to study in Byron for six weeks and this is her first time in Australia. She is very excited!
Danny has been in Australia for 6 months already. He has decided that it is now time for him to properly study English and he is very keen to start at Lexis.
Lee and Choi are old High School friends from Korea. They are both very active and love scuba diving. They are here to have a break from work and to gain some work experience and last but not least to improve their English skills.
Here are some pictures of how our students at Lexis in Byron are starting their weekend! Soccer in the garden, strawberries and watermelon and of course some ice-cold lemonade! Enjoy your weekend everyone!
Our first student to leave was Mirko Blum from Switzerland. He finished in the pre-intermediate class and his teacher Paul said that he was a fantastic student and that he will miss him.
Next up was Elisabeth (Lissa) from Germany. She finished with an A in the upper-intermediate class and Julia her teacher said that she was an absolute joy to teach. Lissa mentioned that she had lots of fun during her three weeks at Lexis and that she was very positively surprised how little the age difference between her and the other students mattered. She also said that she especially loved her experience at Lexis because it was just wonderful to see how well students from all over the world get along.
Also graduating from the upper-intermediate class was Simone from Switzerland. Simone studied with us for 12 weeks and he was an absolutely fantastic student. Always on time, enthusiastic and keen to learn. He started in the pre-intermediate class and finished with an A in the upper-intermediate class. Well done Simone!
Victor from Belgium left us today as well. He said he enjoyed his time here very much and hopes to see everyone again soon. He studied three weeks in our upper-intermediate class and finished with an A. Our students were especially impressed by his French cooking skills he displayed in the afternoon cooking classes by making amazing crepes. We also said Goodbye to Rodolphe who left Lexis last night to fly to Cairns. Good Luck to all of you and don’t forget to come back and see us sometime.
Today two classes joined forces to go to the Farmers Markets in Byron. They enjoyed a warm winter’s day, fantastic local food and beautiful music.
But of course there was also work to be done!
The Upper-intermediate class had the task to interview locals about the markets. They had written a questionnaire together on Wednesday in their lesson and their topic was: “How important are the local markets to you?”. They surely had a great time talking to the locals and a fantastic class discussion afterwards!
The elementary class had to find prices for their “Shopping List”. As you can see from the pictures they all had a fun time learning!

Today was a great day for Byron Bay’s TAP Residential Surf Campers. After lunch we headed up to Currumbin to visit the Wildlife Sanctuary. The boys had been hoping to see some koalas and get up and close with some real Australian wildlife and that’s exactly what they got to do.As we explored the Sanctuary we got to see Dingoes, Snakes, Koalas, Kangaroos, and the boys even got chased down by an Emu!
After Currumbin Wildlife Santuary we went to Coolangatta to see some of the most famous surf spots in Australia like Kirra and Snapper Rocks! To finish the day off we went to get some ramen and sushi!
The boys had a great day and will definitely remember it for a long long time!
This is how our students spend their time after lessons in Byron Bay.
It was a perfect winter’s day today here in Byron and our students enjoyed the winter sun after finishing school. We had our Masterchef Cooking Competition, a soccer game and a music session going on all at the same time!
I was pretty impressed with our Masterchef Cook Off today! We gave two teams only a few ingredients to choose from and they had to create their very own special dish.
Team one led by Belgian Mastermind Victor made amazing French crepes and Japanese Tommy’s Team created a new version of crumbed hamburgers (that’s how they called it! :-). Both dishes were just delicious! We couldn’t decide on a winner. Both teams truly deserve the Matserchef title!
Byron Bay hosts an array of exciting events and festivals throughout the year. From surf carnivals to music festivals featuring internationally renowned artist, there is something for everyone! Festival such as Splendour in the Grass, The Falls Festival, Bluesfest, Spirit Festival and The Mullum Music Festival are just a few outstanding festivals to be mentioned.
And whenever there is a Festival in Byron there is also a job opportunity. Some of our students such as Marie from France have already worked at a festival in Byron and shared their experience with me. Marie said she had a fantastic time working at the Splendour in the Grass Festival two weeks ago. Acts such as Blur, Tame Impala and Flight Facilities were the headliners. Marie worked four days at the bar and thoroughly enjoyed her time at Splendour. If you work at a Festival you also get Festival tickets for free to watch the acts after or before you finish working.
This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the renowned Byron Bay Festival vibe and to earn some money as well!

Today we invited all our new (and old) student to practise their conversation skills in our Coffee Club.
Our teacher Marie told me that all ten students had a fantastic time today talking and getting to know each other. Marie brought her magic box of conversation questions and the students got excited answering questions such as “Have you ever done something you regret?” or “Have you ever been in love””. Especially the last question sparked an interesting discussion the students couldn’t even finish in Coffee Club by the time they had to go home. However, they all agreed that they wanted to continue taking about it tonight in the pub….
Oh, and Marie said that she is sorry but she had so much fun with our students at Coffee Club that she forgot to take pictures for our blog. So I took some of her instead! 🙂
Our former student Yuka missed Lexis and Byron Bay so much that she came up from Sydney where she now lives to visit us! Yuka was so keen to hang out at Lexis that she even participated in today’s Coffee Club with Marie. 🙂
She has only time to stay for two days, but she said she really wanted to see her amazing homestay family John and Gill again as well. Even though Sydney is a beautiful city Yuka told us that Byron is her favourite place to be.
Good to see you Yuka and we hope to see you soon again!
This week, Lexis English welcomes 3 new starters: Pol from Spain, Jenny from Switzerland and Mutsuki from Japan.
Jenny, from Switzerland is going to study at Lexis English for six weeks. This is her first time in Australia and she told me that she wants to learn English because it is an international language and it will help her to communicate whilst travelling and working. Jenny is going to travel around Australia for six weeks once she finishes studying at Lexis.
Mutsuki, from Japan, is here for 2 weeks. She is a Junior student and this is her first time in Australia. She will be joining Marie in her elementary class. When she finishes High School in Japan she wants to be a teacher.
Pol, from Spain has been in Australia for over six months. He already studied English at Lexis in Noosa and decided that it was time for a change so he came to Byron Bay. He is going to study here for another 14 weeks.
We really hope you all enjoy your stay at Lexis English. Welcome!
When asked if anyone wanted to go swimming they all said it was too cold. So instead we went and explored the Broken Head Nature Reserve! The boys had fun playing in the sand and hiking through the reserve!
