What do you love most about traveling?

581089_10151184382927292_1900392799_nI don’t think there is one thing I love most about the travelling. The whole experience and memories you take away from seeing, smelling, tasting different cultures that are so different to your own is eye opening. Learning so much about a country you had no idea about when you landed, meeting amazing people who share incredible stories, give you tips and aid you on your journey, from the things that take your breath away to others that make you smile. Broadening your mind is something you can’t put a price on as travelling is the only thing that you can buy which makes you richer.

What is your favorite trip/place in Australia?

Fraser Island, The Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef were all such special trips for me in completely different ways and they would all be in my top 3 places making it impossible to choose just one. The Whitsundays are absolutely stunning, world class beaches, unbelievable sunsets and living on a sailing boat for 2 days is something only a handful of people can say they’ve enjoyed. Fraser Island was all about the adventure, being in the car and exploring this huge island is something I’ll never forget and the Great Barrier Reef speaks for itself, to see the difference between the world below and the world above the water with coral growing over billions of years with colours and patterns so different to anything we see on land is pretty special.

What do you enjoy most about Byron Bay?

10448727_10152630849302292_4521840715836819765_oIt’s the first time in my life that I’ve lived by the beach and experiencing and adapting to this kind of beach life culture has been interesting. I love the individuality of Byron Bay, how you can be yourself and express your own personality however which way you like and the people embrace it here, the art and music on the street combined with the distinctly local business and not allowing many major corporations to come in and take over shows the strength and community this town has built up over many years. Byron bay is only a small town yet almost every backpacker will come and see it, which just goes to show how special and unique it actually is and how lucky we get to call this place home (even if it is only for a small while)

What was your favorite childhood activity?

Rugby. I played rugby for around 12 years taking it to university. I have always loved football and followed my favourite team (Liverpool) ever since I was a little kid, but playing rugby twice a week for so many years would count as my favourite childhood activity.

What’s the one thing you want to do/see that you haven’t yet?

Any country that hasn’t been stamped in my passport yet.

What a great mix of mother tongues!

Do you know what your “mother tongue” means? It means your first language; the language you speak at home.

Untitled

The pie chart above shows the current percentage breakdown of the different first languages spoken at Lexis. As you can see, it’s a great mix. So, you now have the opportunity to practise conversational English with people from all over the world. Enjoy!

Beach Soccer Cancelled… So We Played Ping Pong!

photo 5

Due to the weather, and the Cyclones hitting Australia at the moment, we had to cancel beach soccer and move indoors. So 12 students battled it out in our Ping Pong Tournament. There was a very high level of Ping Pong played and the final between Marvin and Daniel was ridiculous! Good play from all our players it was such a good tournament! In the end Daniel became the winner.photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 photo 4

Graduation 20.2.15

Today we had eight students graduating. Tatjana, Miyori, Andre, Mia, Katharina, Miguel, Jana, and Jan.

photo 4Tatjana from Switzerland was here for 5 weeks. Her teacher said she was a lovely student.

photo 2Andre from Brazil was here for 6 weeks. His teachers spoke very highly of him and said he is very intelligent and asks very good questions all the time. Andre said thank you to all of his teachers and said thanks to all his classmates.

photo 3Katharina from Germany was with us for 4 weeks. She is leaving to visit her son. Her teachers thought very highly of her and she’s funny. Katharina said thank you for teaching me and that she enjoyed all of her lessons and liked the open mindedness of the classes and that her classmates were very inspiring.

Jana from the Czech Republic was with us for 12 weeks. She has a very high level of English and was a great student and even ended with a 100%on her last listening test. She leaves to go travelling for a month before heading home.

photo 1Jan for Switzerland was here for 12 weeks also. He did very well and his teacher said he had a dry sense of humor like an Aussie. He said he had an amazing time and will go travelling for the next 3 months.

photo 5Mia was with us for 6 months and is from Korea. Her teacher said she was very clever and intelligent and very lovely.

Miguel and Miyori are also leaving us but weren’t with us today during Graduation.

A Cyclone of a Weekend

This weekend you better find some indoor activities it sounds like! Thursday night we have student night at Backpacker World Travel at 9pm. Don’t forget this weekend we have the trip to the Nimbin Markets. If you are interested go talk to Joe at the travel desk!

Winnie-the-Pooh-Piglet-Blustery-Day-Kite

This weekend for the weather it might get pretty hectic! With that Cyclone off the coast most of Queensland and NSW will be getting a lot of rain. We have heavy rain and high wind advisories and the surf should be pretty out of control. If you wanted a weekend to hang out inside and relax listening to the rain and wind. This might be your weekend for that. Might be worth putting on some rain boots and a rain jacket to go look and the ocean but I would suggest staying out of it.

Students got out of class hearing music pumping from one of our classrooms and found that when they went to go investigate they ended up in the middle of a salsa lesson.  With help Daniella from Sassy Salsa our students got an hour long Salsa experience and danced away learning new moves and shaking their hips and moving their feet.

“It’s like being part of a big family”

10922605_10205927761852348_2255972320740344782_n

Lovely ex-student Cristina Alonso Serrano left Lexis Byron Bay at Christmas and spent January travelling in New Zealand. She popped in last week to say hello and share  her memories of being a Lexis student.

My first memory of Lexis

I remember my first day clearly. It was 30 September 2013. and I couldn’t understand anything so I just copied what everyone else was doing. But it was great because there were two other girls my age, Mayumi from Japan and Celine from Switzerland. None of us could speak English very well but we all had fun trying together and laughing at our misunderstandings.”

Going home and coming back

“Unfortunately, after only one month, I had to go home for a family emergency. Lexis made this easy for me and, because I was on a student visa, I was able to postpone my study until I was ready to come back.

“I was confident coming back in May 2014, because now I knew I could understand people and make myself understood. I stayed in a homestay with Claudia and Byron Bernardazzi. It was awesome; really, really awesome. They are a family of four and their two children are really sweet and funny. Byron loves surfing and Claudia is an architect and very creative. They have a beautiful home and they used to have big family dinners when the grandparents and other family members came. It was really fun.”

PicMonkey Collage

How I learned English

“In my first month my English improved really, really quickly. As I got better and better, I felt like my progress was slower but now I realise it wasn’t really; it was just that I could already say the things I needed to in everyday life. I was still improving.

“One thing that really helped was I tried to avoid Spanish as much as possible. I didn’t read Spanish books or even speak to my family too much because I noticed that when I started communicating in Spanish it was more difficult for me to come back to English. I think this was a really good decision for me.

All of my teachers were excellent in different ways; Sarah-Jane was a brilliant teacher in that she made it easy for us Pre-Intermediate students to understand when we didn’t understand much at all. Kathleen was really motivating; she made up funny songs to help us remember the grammar, and also she always tried to teach using topics and discussions she knew we were interested in. Finally, Paul was really, really funny. He always used real-life examples about himself or us students to bring the grammar to life, personalise it and help us remember it.”

The best thing about Byron?

“Everything: the energy, the people, the sky, the stars, everything. And there’s always something going on. If you want to be alone you can spend time in the beautiful nature but if you want to be sociable there are too many options. It’s so easy.”

What I loved about Lexis Byron Bay?

“It was like being part of a family. When you are travelling around alone, you are grateful to find somewhere like that. I know that if I had any problems then every teacher and every member of staff would work together to help me. I’d like to say a big thank you to Lisa, Yvonne, Amy, and Anna, my teachers Sarah-Jane, Kathleen, Paul, Marie and Kat and everyone else who was always so friendly and kind to me.”

10 Weeks – 100% Attendance

photo 2

Graziella Cambin (above) from France has been studying at Lexis English for 10 week and has another 3 weeks to go. She has made excellent progress; she started in Elementary, spent 6 weeks in Pre-Intermediate (where she topped 90% in nearly every weekly test) and will be moving up to Intermediate next week.

What is the secret of her success (apart from amazing teacher and a great school)? I think it comes down to her great attitude her enthusiasm and the fact that, after 10 weeks, she still has 100% attendance. Well done Graziella!

Adrien, when he was seen in class, was very enthusiastic and had great English skills. His teacher said he’snot a morning person!

In Intermediate we had Justin, Andreas, and Matthias from Switzerland and Cecile from New Caledonia. Matthias worked hard and asked a lot of questions and will go travelling for four weeks.Cecile blew her teacher away with how well she did and how hard she worked. CAE Class Trip to the Library!

IMG_6662 (2)

IMG_6669Last Friday, on that lovely sunny morning, the CAE class had an unbelievable and unforgettable experience. We discovered the big building with the huge selection of books.

The atmosphere in the library is very relaxed and welcoming.

IMG_6678Unfortunately, there was an annoying paparazzi man who was taking pictures all the time.

There are a lot of opportunities of what to do in the library. It’s not just about borrowing books, you can use the computers, read newspapers, study and there are a lot of other things to do and use.

IMG_6675

The funky fluorescent-pink-haired library lady gave us a guided tour and showed us around. Later, all the students joined the library and borrowed some stuff.

Ping Pong Tournament! New Champion!

photo 5

Yesterday we had a Ping Pong Tournament that pitted 12 of our students against each other. We had quite the range of students from different countries like Switzerland, France, Japan, Korea, and Brazil.

We played the games to eleven and win by two until the semi finals and finals where the students played until 21. In the final we had Adrien vs Patrick. It was quite the showdown and a lot of skill was displayed. In the end Adrien became the victor! He said although the prize was great he really just wanted to be the victor! All of our students played at a very high level and it was amazing to watch!

We have five students that came to us from Switzerland: Jennifer, who at home is a nurse; Nathalie, who is going to be a teacher; Manuel, who worked in public transportation; Nina, who transferred to us from Brisbane; and Jonas, who at home is a Mechanical Engineer for a solar company.

We also welcome Aline from Brazil, a lawyer who works closely with Americans, and is here to improve her English to help with her work and Cody a massage therapist from Taiwan. Also joining us today are French beautician Caroline and Miyori from Japan who is hoping to improve her English so she can do a TESOL course.
