Tomorrow is an exciting day as the first students move into the Lexis | Byron Bay onsite accommodation.
Earlier today, I was lucky enough to take a quick tour round the facilities. Everywhere is light, bright, white and new. The rooms are extremely light and airy with comfortable beds, desks storage facilities. The bathrooms are sparkling and new, with private showers for boys and girls and a large shared vanity area.
The student lounge is also looking good (no photos yet as finishing touches are still being applied). It has a huge commercial kitchen with a cooking island containing induction cook tops.
For the full tour, come to the opening between 5-6pm tomorrow and enjoy the complimentary refreshments and music.
Today we had a lot of students graduating from Lexis Byron bay, many who have been here for a long time and feel like such a part of the family.
We had the Cambridge First Certificate class
along with the Cambridge Advanced Certificate of English class,
who graduated today and will be sitting their final exams in coming days.
Their teachers said that they have been very hard working, diligent and fun to teach. The students in these classes spend so much time together and often form strong friendships with each other and their teachers. It has been such a pleasure having their smiling faces here at Lexis every day.
We also had a number of students from General English who grauated today:
Ayaka, who has been with us for twelve weeks and who has improved her English dramatically, also graduated today.
Giacomo and Misako both graduated from Elementary class today. They have both been wonderful students and will be staying in Byron bay for some time, Misako, to complete her yoga teacher training and Giacomo to continue working and enjoying Byron life.
Samira and Nadia also graduated today. Samira will be leaving Byron bay and continuing her studies at Lexis in Perth. Nadia has been here in Byron for eight weeks and her teacher said she has been a brilliant student the whole time.
Thank you too all graduating students for the good approach to their studies, for the fun and laughter with each other and for the joy they have brought to Lexis!
The winners are in from each Lexis English School in Australia and it is time for Carol from Student Uni Travel to choose her favourite #LexisSelfie. The grand prize winner will receive a 3 day 2 night trip to Fraser Island valued at $420! Here are our entries and winners from each school.
Andreas and Julian and their Tooth-Brushing Selfie from Brisbane!

There are so many activities to do in Byron and lots of different ways to travel around town – including skate boarding! After class on Tuesday Flavio Biehl, a Byron bay local professional skater, visited Lexis to teach us all how to skate!
Flavio gave great instructions and soon we are all rolling along and learning how to balance, duck down on the board, do ‘tic-tacs’ and wheelies. There were long skate boards as well as short ones, both designed to ride differently.
There were a few falls, but this was definitely outweighed by the fun and laughter.
As it turns out, we have some natural skaters here who picked up the skill and techniques of skating very quickly.

Today we have seven new starters at Lexis Byron bay!
We welcome Ayaka, who is from Japan and travelling Australia while earning English. Camila is from Brazil and is here to improve her English for her professional role back in her country. She has arrived along with her friend Andrea, also from Brazil who is here for the same reason! They are looking forward to the opportunity to learn a language and enjoy what Byron has to offer.
Jana is from the Czech Republic and is here to improve her English and also enjoy a different environment and culture. Severin is taking some time out from his carpentry job in Switzerland to study, surf and travel.
Kanami is here from a small city in Japan. She wanted to study in a smaller place, rather than big city and so has chosen here in Byron.
And finally Graziella is here from a town on the west coast of France.
A big welcome to all of you and we hope you enjoy your time here!
Today at Lexis Byron we said farewell to some wonderful people.
Pascaline is leaving Lexis to spend another month in Australia. Her teacher said she had started as a quiet student who quickly progressed and became one of the most talkative in the class! Pascaline has no plans for the coming time in Australia, she will just go with the flow.
Carlo’s teacher said his English improved dramatically in only a short amount of time while he has been studying at Lexis. He will now be travelling the coast of Australia with his girlfriend who will be arriving in the country in coming days.
Kaede’s teacher congratulated her on her studies and efforts – she took one week off work to come to Australia and chose to study at Lexis rather than spend her work break relaxing. Well done Kaede! She is going back to Japan this weekend.
And finally,Michael is leaving Lexis Byron for further travel. He will be travelling solo for some time around the country. His teacher said that the improvements in his English have been amazing, and he has gone up level after level in the Lexis classes. He has been with us for quite some time and has made many special friends.
One of the most famous and beautiful parts of Byron bay is also the most easterly point of Australia. The iconic Byron bay lighthouse is situated on cliff just near this point and has become a famous coastal landmark. From this point one can look out over Byron bay shire and across to the hinterland as well as out to the Pacific Ocean.
On Wednesday a group of Lexis students headed to the lighthouse to participate in a photo scavenger hunt!
In teams of two, the students completed various challenges as they made their way down from the lighthouse, seeing new places and taking photos of various landmarks, people and views.
They approached and spoke to locals and tourists, getting photo evidence of all their interactions.
And also completed physical challenges and visited various landmarks between from the lighthouse, to Wategos beach and the famous surf spot, The Pass.
The first team to make it back to Lexis won a six pack of boutique Aussie beer along with a pack of Tim-Tams! The winners were Miwa and Rico.

TIP: SCHOOLIES IS STARTING THIS WEEKEND:
Schoolies starts on the 22nd of November. Schoolies is basically when year 12 high school students complete their final exams. Many year 12’s around Australia go for one or two weeks to party, party, party. There are three major places where tens of thousands of students from all around Australia go to celebrate: Gold Coast, Bali and Byron bay. So in the next few weeks you will notice a lot of young people partying around town. There will also be increased numbers of police and very strict security at bars and pubs. Also, be prepared to wait in queues if you are going out late. If you want to know more about the schoolies, click here.
Remember to smile, have fun and congratulate any schoolies you meet- they have just finished school forever 🙂
Yesterday after class we got together and set up a mini kitchen on a table in the student lounge!
We then all watched on as we were taught how to make two classic Brazillian sweets, brigadeiro and beijinho (which translates as little kisses).
We learned the recipe, which consists of sweetened condensed milk, drinking chocolate, butter for the brigadeiro, and coconut, sweetened condensed milk and butter for the bejinho.
Our Brazillian chefs showed us how to heat up the mixture, which then was cooled. While we waited for the mixture to cool down we chatted about different sweets from different countries.
Our chefs also explained numerous things that Brazil is famous for, such as Rio Carnival, dancing, partying and Samba and we listened to Samba music as we cooked.
After a while we took the cooking mixture and rolled it into small balls covered in choc sprinkles or coconut.
As expected, brigaeiro and beijinho are very very sweet and delicious! We shared them around amongst the group and the chefs ensured some were saved for the Lexis staff.
Thanks to the chefs for sharing the recipes and all the information about Brazil!
We welcome five new students to Lexis this week! Kaede is from Japan and will be staying with us for just one week before she heads back to her country to begin work again.
Andrin is here from Switzerland to improve his English, travel and have some time here after service in the Swiss army.
Mariana has come to Lexis from a small island close to Ibiza, the name of which is too difficult for me to try to spell!
Daniel has arrived in Australia from Milano in Italy and will be spending time here before travelling some more of the country.
And then we have Marion and Jan who are both here from Switzerland and looking forward to their time here in Australia.

After sampling a number of different Aussie beers, a group of Lexis students went to the local pub, The Beach Hotel, for Friday drinks. It was a good time to hang out with other students and get to know each other a little better. Every student has an interesting story to tell about their life experience, culture and travels!
Speaking with other students from different cultures is a great way to open the mind and learn about people and places. For example, there were conversations about the Swiss Army, about working in different countries, family life, culture, dating and more.
There was even some arm wrestles! And, as always, lots of laughing.
Today we farewelled three students from Lexis English Byron bay. Aline, Joana and Blandine all graduated from their English courses and are leaving town on the weekend for further travel.
Aline’s teacher, Sammy, said he wished all students were like her, as she had been a highly dedicated student during her time here!
Joana’s teacher, Claudia, commented that Joana had improved her English significantly during her stay in Byron and wished her the best for her travels.

Yesterday we had an expert come into Lexis to show us how to do an interesting and unique activity: slacklining!
Josh Mannix is a professional slackliner who teaches all around Australia and internationally. He emphasised that when on the line it is important to focus on your breathing and being flexible, loose and relaxed.
It turns out, we have some students here who are excellent at it! Carlo, Simone and Fabian could even do little tricks and foot changes and turns.
By the end of the session we had a number of students who had really improved at this activity, and Josh said it was one of the quickest learning groups he had worked with!
Thanks to Josh for being a great slackline teacher!
This afternoon in the student lounge a group of Lexis people sat down to chai lattes, cappuccinos and Tim-Tams to get to know each other a little better.
Enjoying lattes and cappuccinos
We pulled up a big line of tables and everyone introduced themselves, telling the group something interesting or surprising about themselves. There were lots of laughs and some deep philosophical conversations which came out of these introductions! For example, a discussion about whether animals have intelligence and consciousness.
And then there was some silliness too…
We also had a special visitor! My sister, Penny, who has just arrived back in Australia after travelling Europe for five months. This made for interesting conversation with some of our European students. They discussed the different European places they had been and travelled to and the different opinions of these places and cultures.
Sharing stories, ideas and learning more about each other is a great way to practice the English language, and deepen our awareness of others. Coffee club at Lexis Byron is a great place for this to happen!
Byron bay buzzes with creativity. From street performers, buskers, to the live music scene, the talent around town is always on display. There is free live music every night and in Summer time, the Byron artisan market, the night market and the beach side market play host to some very talented individuals selling a vast variety of imaginative, artistic and dreamy creations.
So it is only fitting to discover that there are also loads of art galleries in and around town. Below I have listed a few. Go along and check them out if you get the chance during your stay in beautiful Byron bay!

We also had two new students transfer from different Lexis locations: Stefan from the Brisbane campus and Kevin from Maroochdore. They went straight into their classes this morning, so I didn’t get to snap a picture of them.
We welcome all of you to Lexis Byron, enjoy your stay!
Under a cloudy sky on Friday afternoon a group of us headed to the beach after class for a picnic and some soccer. There was lots of snacks that are popular Australian picnic food, such as crackers and dip, chips, fruit, sweets and cans of drink.
Most of the students got to taste something they had never tried before, such as musk sticks, three-olive dip, soy crisps, ginger beer and other delicious snacks.
The sun eventually came out as students relaxed on the beach, chatted, laughed and discussed all sorts of things- there was so interesting conversation
And, of course, there was a competitive game of soccer on the beach! We have some very good players here at Lexis!
Today we said farewell to two of our wonderful students Deborah and Elisa, who graduated from Lexis Byron bay.
Deborah’s teacher, Sammy, said she has been a delight to have in the class and that her beautiful smile and good energy was wonderful to be around. She is flying home to Switzerland tomorrow. Deborah said she had a wonderful time here in Byron and thanked everyone for the friendship.
Elisa’s teacher, Kathleen said that she had been happy and surprised with how much Elisa has learned and improved her English, especially because she often did not come to class! But when she did she was always happy and a lovely student to have here at Lexis.
Farewell guys! All the best for your future and lots of love from Lexis Byron bay!

There was a lot of talent at today’s table tennis competition. There were also a lot of games played as we had loads of participants!
The competition went for an hour and a half. We have some very talented and very competitive table tennis players here at Lexis Byron bay, but today one of our newer students, Jeremy, came through and managed to beat Leo, a fierce competitor! Well done to all the players today!
The two finalists decided to share the prize which was of six pack of cold Italian beer.
The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is the name of a Melbourne horse racing series held during October and November. There are many races held during this time, but the most prestigious and famous are the Melbourne Cup Day followed by, Oaks Day, Derby Day and Stakes Day. The Melbourne Cup race has become such a famous race that it is now recognized as one of the biggest horse races in the world, with many international horses competing for the prize. The prize money for this two minute race this year was over $3,500,000.
As you can imagine, race day is big in Melbourne and celebrated with a four day weekend (in Australia, most of our biggest National events are to do with sport). The race is now labelled ‘the race that stops the nation.’
Fashion and prestige surround the event and each year women and men dress up in their finest clothes to attend the various racing events during Spring Carnival to drink (usually a lot of champagne and sparkling wine) and bet (usually a lot of money).
There are fashion parades, champagne bottles, V.I.P marquees for the rich and famous, and then general seats or ground tickets for those who still want to attend, but do not want to spend big money. That being said, a ticket to the event will cost you, at cheapest, around $70.
Around the country there are parties and people gather to watch the event, placing bets on which horse the think will win the race. We did the same with Lexis students and spent the afternoon at the pub! We had a Lexis ‘sweep’ which is a luck-of-the-draw bet. Each student paid $2 to choose a horse at random.
And the winners were these guys!
After the race, there were a few drinks shared, with a number of Lexis students being surprised that the race was completely over in just a few minutes. People cleared out of the pub and collected their prize money. One student commented: “All THIS (the hype, the excitement and the buzz) just for two minutes?!?! It is crazy”
(Funnily enough, as a Melbourne born Australia, I can see his point.)
Ultimate Frizbee on the beach was a good kick off to the weekend! Ultimate Frizbee is a competitive game, kind of like soccer, but with a frizbee off the ground, rather than a soccer ball on the ground.
Two teams battled against each other to score goals with the frizbee. The wind made it a challenging game as it often changed the course of the frizbee and took it far far up and away in the wrong direction.
However, the teams managed to get used to it, throwing short and low. As usual, there were a host of Lexis students sun bathing, relaxing on the beach and swimming near by, watching and cheering on the other frizbee players.
It was also a time for beach swims, fun and relaxing in the ocean. Byron bay Main Beach beach is a regular hang out spot for Lexis students and it is easy to see why. It is one of the most beautiful places in Australia.
