Byron Bay Poker Tournament

photo 1 (7)

This afternoon the student lounge turned into a casino as our students practised their poker faces on teacher Claudia.

Apparently, we had an expert at the table – Thomas, who was quick to tell Claudia how the professionals play.

At the end the students exchanged their chips for prizes: some cute Australiana pens.

Welcome to our New Starters 25 August 2014

Pascal is full of smiles and he’s delighted to be in Byron Bay.He works part-time as a DJ in Zurich and Lucerne and he loves his godchildren, movies and going out.

Yui is here on holiday from University in Japan, where she is training to be a school nurse. She has twin brothers and she likes singing.

Finally, Ivana is from Italy. She wanted to come to Australia because it’s beautiful and because she wants to learn English. She works in TV production in Italy.

We wish all of you a very warm welcome and hope you have a fantastic time here in Byron Bay.

Meet the Staff: Academic Manager Lisa!

10488071_10152124977885899_6363654756823758124_n

This week we meet Lisa, our Academic Manager here at Lexis English | Byron Bay!

Here she talks about her top tips for exploring Byron Bay, using the English Only policy to make friends and her sinister past as an embroiderer!

Languages spoken: Spanish (enough to get by badly) Turkish (enough to ask for a cup of tea)

I always wanted to be a …. Fashion Designer and my degree is actually in Fashion and Textile Design – specialism: Embroidery!

Byron Bay’s best kept secret is …. Lexis English school of course! It’s probably the most beautiful place in the world to learn English – and to work.

I’ll bet you didn’t know …..I always live in places beginning with B. I grew up in Botley (Oxford, England), went to university in Birmingham (England), spent my 20s in Bicester and Banbury (England), moved to Brunswick (Melbourne) in 2006 and now live in Byron Bay.

At 11pm on a Saturday, you’ll find me …. Curled up on the sofa, cuddling my two dogs, reading a good book, listening to some soulful music and drinking a nice glass of red wine.

At 8 am on a Saturday, you’ll find me….. walking my dogs on one of the many beautiful beaches around Byron and looking forward to the rest of the weekend.

My dream holiday destination is ….a raw food and yoga retreat by the beach

Best restaurant/cafe in Byron Bay is ….I haven’t been able to try them all yet, but anyone who comes to Byron simply must try drinking cocktails at the Balcony

When you’re in Byron Bay, don’t miss …. Chocolate Yoga, snorkelling at Julian Rocks and a surf lesson or two.

My English learning tip is….to make it sociable. Our English Only policy means that even when you’re not in class you’ll be speaking in English – on activities, at lunchtime and when leaving school. And when you make friends with students from different countries, your English will improve without you even having to try.

Thanks Lisa! Look out for her with her dogs on the beach, supping cocktails at the Balcony or at your next Chocolate Yoga session 🙂

10636524_897303550299015_5550300944452223466_o

The weekend has rolled on around once again! It does have a tendency to do that! Here’s whats on this weekend in Byron!

Local live music is no surprise from the Northern – this Friday they have Floating Bridges, Dawn Chorus and The Silver Dollars. The Rails also love keeping it local – this Friday we have Bossy Big Heart.

Kick off your Friday night at the Beachy from 5pm with Scott Day-vee Duo, and follow that up with The Familiars from 9pm.

There’s comedy at the Brewery with Frank Woodley, Mandy Nolan and Fiona McGary, and open mic and tapas at Aquarius!

On Saturday, Jimmy The Saint & The Sinners, Waxhead and Dead Books are all playing at the Northern, Dillion James Band at the Rails, GG Magree at the Beachy and Neem at the Buddha Bar.

And on Sunday, Hot Sex Chocolate (ooh err) are at the Northern, Chris Cook Band are at the Rails, Jaffer is at the Beachy from 4.30pm, followed by local DJs from 8pm; and the Buddha Bar are continuing their new karaoke Sundays tradition!

Have a great weekend!!

8 Useful Websites for Self-Study

There are many, many websites dedicated to helping students study at home or alone. Here are some of my favourites. Between them they provide grammar summaries and quizzes, vocabulary instruction and games, specialist English like Business English, sayings and slang, writing tips, forums for answering your questions and listening and pronunciation practice and instruction. You can borrow headphones at reception ($20 deposit) so next time it rains and you don’t know what to do, why not give some of these a go.

FridayDance

Happy Friday everyone!!

Plenty on this weekend – live music and share house theatre and much, much more!

Also, Nathan Kaye Collective are playing at the Rails, Jon & Max Fogg are at the Beachy from 5pm – followed by another awesome local band – Wandering Eyes are playing the Beachy at 9pm – these guys play a really fun blend of roots, reggae, hip hop and rock with plenty of bouncy tunes!

Ben Fowler is at the Treehouse if you fancy heading over to Belongil for some music, cocktails and delicious wood fired pizza; and the Buddha Bar are hosting a live reggae jam.

On Saturday, lots of live music at the Northern with The Dark Hawks, The Loathing and Frankie; Mar Haze are at the Rails and DJ Fonzaius is at the Beachy from 9.30pm.

A brilliant, and very relevant, play is coming to the Byron Theatre – Topology: Share House, is a play about four musicians living together in a share house – something many of us have experienced the highs and lows of!

On Sunday, Josh Hamilton is playing at the Northern, The Whiskey Drop are at the Rails from 6.30pm, and The Hanlon Brothers are at the Beachy from 4.30pm, followed by DJ Taya at 8pm.

Lots of live music at the Treehouse – with Vernas Keep, Ziggy Alberts and Portia Hacket playing in the afternoon and Wadeep playing in the evening from 6pm.

Ulysse and Greg talk about their time in Byron Bay!

photo_2441794_20140807

16 year old French students Ulysse and Greg have come to the end of their five week stay in Byron Bay – where they studied English, surfed and explored our stunning coastal town.

Here are the boys pulling some dashing faces on their surf lesson 🙂

We spoke to them about their time here at Lexis English | Byron Bay!

photo_2441803_20140807

Gregoire:

I really like my homestay. They cook very well and their child Jack, who is 7, is a very nice boy. They are very welcoming. They also had a Japanese student staying with them and he was cool. There is always a friendly atmosphere at dinner!

photo_2441901_20140807

If I had to describe Byron Bay to another student, I would say that in the winter the weather is very good, and it is a very good spot to surf – there are great waves. The people are very friendly, especially at Lexis!

I enjoyed my lessons – Paul is a very good teacher. It is my second time in Australia – I also studied at Lexis Noosa – Lexis is a good school.

photo_2442035_20140807

My surfing definitely progressed while I was here – I got better at surfing the face of the wave. I also bought a $400 wetsuit! The surf instructors are really good.

Thanks Greg! We won’t tell your Dad about the $400 wetsuit….

Ulysse:

Yesterday I went to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, on the Gold Coast – I saw so many crocodiles and got to hold a koala!photo_2441942_20140807

My homestay was really good – Georgia, my homestay Mum, was such a nice, helpful and funny person. The food was great, too.

I also really liked my teachers – when I first arrived  I found it difficult to understand, but whenever you don’t understand, they stop and explain. Paul is a very good teacher. The English Only policy is good too, as it makes me speak English and speak to other students.

photo_2441946_20140807If I had to recommend what to do in Byron Bay to a new student, I would tell them to walk into town for the atmosphere, and to see the hippies! And also definitely go surfing – there are amazing waves.

My surfing has improved – I’ve been surfing on short boards rather than the foam boards that you use when you first start learning. Mojo are a really good surf school!

Thanks Ulysse and Greg! We hope that you come back to visit us, as well as the koalas, the hippies and the waves; some day!

French Cooking Workshop at Lexis English | Byron Bay!

French cooking workshop

This afternoon we had a French cooking workshop down in the student lounge – where we made a delicious and hearty French onion soup – perfect for a winter’s day!

We took a few shortcuts with the recipe, but it still tasted amazing! Jun and Sanae from Japan and Laryssa from Brazil helped my chop a huge bag of onions, which we sauteed in plenty of butter until they were soft. Then, we added brown sugar and Jun (who is a trainee chef!) caramelised the onions. We added flour, beef stock and lots of pepper; and simmered the soup in the pan.

As if that weren’t scrumptious enough, we sprayed fresh bread with olive oil spray, rubbed it with a halved clove of garlic, and sprinkled it with cheese before blasting it in the microwave for some tasty melted cheese bread to go with our soup.

See this link for the recipe! http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/1144/french+onion+soup
