Byron Bay Poker Tournament

photo 1 (7)

This afternoon the student lounge turned into a casino as our students practised their poker faces on teacher Claudia.

Apparently, we had an expert at the table – Thomas, who was quick to tell Claudia how the professionals play.

At the end the students exchanged their chips for prizes: some cute Australiana pens.

Welcome to our New Starters 25 August 2014

Today we welcome Leonardo Da Cunha Barbosa from Brazil, Pascal Wigger from Switzerland, Ivana Coscarella from Italy and Yui Tanimoto from Japan.

Leonardo is from Rio de Janeiro, where he works selling apartments to tourists (mostly American). He has learnt all his English through his work but now wants to study it formally to understand the rules of grammar and, even more importantly, make more sales.

Pascal is full of smiles and he’s delighted to be in Byron Bay.He works part-time as a DJ in Zurich and Lucerne and he loves his godchildren, movies and going out.

Yui is here on holiday from University in Japan, where she is training to be a school nurse. She has twin brothers and she likes singing.

Finally, Ivana is from Italy. She wanted to come to Australia because it’s beautiful and because she wants to learn English. She works in TV production in Italy.

We wish all of you a very warm welcome and hope you have a fantastic time here in Byron Bay.

Didgeridoo Lesson at Lexis English | Byron Bay!!

Today Adam came in to show our students a thing or two on the didgeridoo! 11 students gathered in the student lounge to put their circular breathing skills into practice! There were some quite hilarious moments and funny faces pulled – and also some natural talent shining through 🙂

If you would like to have more didgeridoo lessons at the school, come and let us know!!

Graduation at Lexis English | Byron Bay!! 22nd August 2014

We say a sad farewell today to three fantastic students!

Jun will be returning to Japan to continue his studies as a chef – having had his help with my French cooking workshop, I can tell you that he is a fantastic chef and will no doubt make some amazing food during his career!

Frederic will be returning back to France after studying English and learning to surf here in Byron. He’ll be exploring some of the Gold Coast and Brisbane before he leaves and will be coming back!

Daniel is off to New Zealand after his travels here in Australia to use his new found English skills in this corner of the world!

The ping pong table will be a quiet place without Frederic and Daniel!!

Good luck guys, we will miss you!

Meet the Staff: Academic Manager Lisa!

This week we meet Lisa, our Academic Manager here at Lexis English | Byron Bay!

Here she talks about her top tips for exploring Byron Bay, using the English Only policy to make friends and her sinister past as an embroiderer!

Languages spoken: Spanish (enough to get by badly) Turkish (enough to ask for a cup of tea)

I always wanted to be a …. Fashion Designer and my degree is actually in Fashion and Textile Design – specialism: Embroidery!

Byron Bay’s best kept secret is …. Lexis English school of course! It’s probably the most beautiful place in the world to learn English – and to work.

I’ll bet you didn’t know …..I always live in places beginning with B. I grew up in Botley (Oxford, England), went to university in Birmingham (England), spent my 20s in Bicester and Banbury (England), moved to Brunswick (Melbourne) in 2006 and now live in Byron Bay.

At 11pm on a Saturday, you’ll find me …. Curled up on the sofa, cuddling my two dogs, reading a good book, listening to some soulful music and drinking a nice glass of red wine.

At 8 am on a Saturday, you’ll find me….. walking my dogs on one of the many beautiful beaches around Byron and looking forward to the rest of the weekend.

My dream holiday destination is ….a raw food and yoga retreat by the beach

Best restaurant/cafe in Byron Bay is ….I haven’t been able to try them all yet, but anyone who comes to Byron simply must try drinking cocktails at the Balcony

When you’re in Byron Bay, don’t miss …. Chocolate Yoga, snorkelling at Julian Rocks and a surf lesson or two.

My English learning tip is….to make it sociable. Our English Only policy means that even when you’re not in class you’ll be speaking in English – on activities, at lunchtime and when leaving school. And when you make friends with students from different countries, your English will improve without you even having to try.

Thanks Lisa! Look out for her with her dogs on the beach, supping cocktails at the Balcony or at your next Chocolate Yoga session 🙂

What’s on this weekend in Byron Bay!! 22-23-24 August 2014

The weekend has rolled on around once again! It does have a tendency to do that! Here’s whats on this weekend in Byron!

Local live music is no surprise from the Northern – this Friday they have Floating Bridges, Dawn Chorus and The Silver Dollars. The Rails also love keeping it local – this Friday we have Bossy Big Heart.

Kick off your Friday night at the Beachy from 5pm with Scott Day-vee Duo, and follow that up with The Familiars from 9pm.

There’s comedy at the Brewery with Frank Woodley, Mandy Nolan and Fiona McGary, and open mic and tapas at Aquarius!

On Saturday, Jimmy The Saint & The Sinners, Waxhead and Dead Books are all playing at the Northern, Dillion James Band at the Rails, GG Magree at the Beachy and Neem at the Buddha Bar.

And on Sunday, Hot Sex Chocolate (ooh err) are at the Northern, Chris Cook Band are at the Rails, Jaffer is at the Beachy from 4.30pm, followed by local DJs from 8pm; and the Buddha Bar are continuing their new karaoke Sundays tradition!

Have a great weekend!!
