Friday Farewells

Last week we said goodbye to some of our favourite students!

The beautiful Erika is returning to Switzerland after an adventure that was short but sweet.

We farewelled the diligent Clayne, a model student!

We also said goodbye to Joao and Felipe, laid back Brazilian brothers sharing peace, love and smiles everywhere they go. The boys are off to the desert to experience Australian Indigenous culture and spread their message of world peace through travel.

And finally, we farewelled Adriano, another charming Brazilian whose energy will be greatly missed. He looks sad to say goodbye!

Good luck everyone, thanks for sharing your journeys with us!

Byron enjoyed unseasonably warm weather this week so we thought we’d hit the waves!

Our fourteen year old French exchange student Andrea showed the grownups how it’s done!

And Japanese student Sunny was amazing for a first time surfer.

Spanish student Carmen took this one on her belly but has made awesome progess after a week of lessons.

Happy days everyone!

Responsible Service of Alcohol

For students hoping to find a job in Byron Bay, it’s important to know that all employees  in the hospitality industry in New South Wales must have a Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate.

This is because every individual working in a venue that serves alcohol must be  completely aware of their legal responsibilities as suppliers and servers of liquor.

The RSA Certificate course includes information about:

  • The effects of alcohol on the human body and on society
  • Prevention of intoxication
  • Dealing with drunk customers and dangerous situations
  • Refusal of alcohol service to minors
  • Importance and benefits of an RSA Certificate

So if you want to get a part-time job while you study, it’s a great idea to complete your RSA course before you start looking for work. It only takes one day and it’s easy!

See Michelle and Sarah in the office at Lexis Byron Bay for information about upcoming  courses in the local area.

Australia’s Most Easterly Point

On their last day of school, Ginny took her wonderful CAE class to the lighthouse at the most easterly point of the Australian mainland as a reward for all their hard work.

It was a wild and woolly day, and Chiara was feeling wild and woolly too!

The girls enjoyed the view from behind the safety of the barrier…

…before venturing out to the most Easterly point of the Australian mainland.

Dangerous?

Perhaps! But Chloe’s up for the challenge!

Congratulations CAE team! A well-deserved adventure after all your hard work.

Cape Byron Lighthouse

Winter is upon us! And while Byron may be famous for its balmy summer weather, Lexis students Mirco and Erika discovered today that the winter has its great beauty too.

Braving a cold southerly wind, we climbed to the top of Cape Byron Lighthouse and were rewarded with spectacular moody views across the bay to Mount Warning and all the way down Tallows Beach to Broken Head.

At the museum, we learned about the history of the lighthouse and were amazed to discover that the light, visible for almost fifty kilometres, is powered by a single tiny globe refracted through a giant crystal lens! Mirco experienced first hand the surprising weight of a single whale vertebrae.

And although we didn’t see any whales in the water today, we’re pretty sure we spotted a shark swirling around in the depths. Awesome!

Work & Study? It’s possible, meet our Lexis Students who do both…

Many students at Lexis Byron Bay hope to find part-time work in Australia. Working is a great way to meet people and improve your English skills. As Byron is a popular tourist destination with over two million visitors per year, there is often employment available for students in the retail, tourism and hospitality industries, particularly during the summer months from October to March.

Fabio is a man of many talents! In his short time here at Lexis Byron Bay he has established himself as our resident handyman, undertaking casual maintenance and building work at the school, the student house and for several local businesses. He also works as a DJ at local bars, clubs and events.

Elena and Elena are friends from Spain both studying for their Cambridge exams at Lexis Byron Bay. The girls work together as cleaners at a resort in town. They generally work three or four mornings per week including Saturdays which leaves them with plenty of time to study and play!

Felipe is a 20 year old Brazilian student who is studying for his IELTS exams at Lexis Byron Bay. Felipe works twenty hours per week at the Cypress Tree Greek restaurant in Byron Bay, working evenings and weekend shifts. “I was really lucky to get this job. A friend was leaving town and needed a replacement, so I was hired straight away! It’s perfect for me with my studies.”

Carole is an 18 year old from Brazil who is studying at Lexis Byron Bay for six months. She has two jobs, working as a waitress at a Spanish restaurant several nights a week and doing casual work as a housekeeper for local motels and resorts.  “Working is a great way to make friends and I am always talking with customers so I improve my English all the time!”
