On Friday, 28th October 2011, Jason Clark from Australian Vintage Wines came to Lexis English Byron Bay to share his skills, knowledge and wines from Australian Vintage Wines. Students and staff had an entertaining and informative afternoon learning about the various wine growing regions throughout Australia. We also enjoyed tasting all the beautiful varieties Jason brought along for us to sample.
Style Surfing Byron Bay . . .
On Thursday 20th October students were taken on a surfing adventure with Gaz, from Style Surfing Byron Bay . . . the surf was fairly good, although there was a stronger current than on previous days. The students enjoyed their surfing and are all hooked on this amazing and healthy lifestyle sport!
Gaz even described some of them as ‘shredding!’
What a cook-up! After a long long wait we all finally got to taste a bit of Sicily when Italian student Nicola cooked us all a magnificent pasta dish on Tuesday.
The next cooking activity will be on 4th November! Swiss maybe?

Finally we got to go SURFING with STYLE SURFING BYRON BAY. The conditions were finally PERFECT for our lesson, smooth glassy ocean, no wind and small, almost perfectly formed rolling waves allowed us to surf @ The PASS! Whilst Gaz our trusted surf instuctor is away surfing Indonesian barrels, we were left in the hands of Marky and Adam, who proved to be excellent, patient, fun teachers! The students, along with teacher Andrew and Michelle had an awesome afternoon. We are all looking forward to the weekend to show off our new and improved surfing skills!

Lexis Byron Bay visited a local Byron shire attraction on Thursday 22nd September 2011: The Macadamia Castle! A group of 12 students, plus Michelle and Vee (our trusted driver) had a great afternoon wandering through the native gardens, feeding an abundance of native birds and viewing a variety of native and farm animals and snakes and reptiles. The most fun was had when we all had the chance to pick up the baby chickens (chicks) and the baby rabbits (bunnies). We also got to see an Eastern Brown Snake – one of the most deadly in the entire world and see some Kangaroos amongst the trees.

Last week at graduation we had to say goodbye to a number of students, but one student decided to say goodbye by giving us a treat- a display of some fine breakdancing skills.
Dooky, normally popular for his jokes and easy-going nature, was persuaded by clapping and cheering until he couldn’t say no any more. With an i-pod for music he wasted no time in getting busy.

The best way to remember English vocabulary
One of the most difficult things about learning a foreign language is mastering the vocabulary. Even if you have a first language (such as French or German) which is related to English, there are many “false friends”, words which are similar to English ones but which are actually used differently. There is no easy way to memorise English words, but there is one method that is guaranteed to get results: quiz yourself.
Back in the 19thCentury, a German psychologist called
CurveEbbinghaus was one of the first to study memory, and his work is still recognised today. He found that when a person memorises a set of new words, they forget over 50% of them within an hour. After a day, almost 2/3 is forgotten, and after 6 days, only 30% of the words stay in our head. Therefore, most of the words you learn will be forgotten very quickly! But there’s good news, too. Ebbinghaus found that when you review new words shortly after you first learn them, you won’t forget them so quickly. To put a word in your long-term memory, you will need to review it about seven times. Each time you remember the word, you will make or widen the path to the word in your brain. The best way to do this is by quizzing yourself, and the easiest way to do this is by using word cards.
Make a list of about twenty useful English words that you’d like to remember. Write each word on the front of the card with its part of speech (noun, verb, adjective etc). On the back, write its meaning, either in easy English or in your native language, along with an example sentence from your dictionary. Then test yourself, from word to meaning first, and then from meaning to word. Don’t forget to shuffle the cards each time so that you remember the words, not the list. And you should test yourself both orally and by writing. Do this often, and you’ll never forget the words!
These days, there are also many cheap or free ways to make “word cards” on your computer and phone. You might like to google some, or check out iTunes for some of the latest Apps there. Whichever way you choose to do it, reviewing vocabulary by quizzing yourself is well worth the time and effort.

Today we welcomed over 25 new students to Global Village Byron Bay. We celebrated in the gorgeous sunny backyard with an Ozzie BBQ and drinks. We look forward to getting to know all the new students over the next few weeks and months.
On chilly winter mornings, everone is keen to get out in the sunshine, and we don’t always have to be in a classroom to speak English. Every Thursday there are farmers’ markets in Byron Bay, and many local farmers bring in their freshest, most delicious food. There’s also plenty of music to keep people entertained, and snack food and coffee if you just want to relax.
This week, two classes took advantage of the chance to practice their English by chatting to native speakers at the markets: the Upper-Intermediate students and the Pre-Intermediate students.
